crunchy31 Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 I'm not sure, but I think I read somewhere that vitamin E and Shea butter are natural sun protectors. ? ...I've been wanting to make a lip balm with sunscreen in it, so let us know if you find anything. Quote
sudsnwicks Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 I'm not sure, but I think I read somewhere that vitamin E and Shea butter are natural sun protectors. ? I've read this too, though I don't know if the amount of protection is significant or not. Haven't been able to find too much info on this other than their being natural sun protectors. Quote
Barb_513 Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 I have read that Shea is a natural protector also, but I believe I read that it was a low level protector. I'd love to find something to make or better yet something Ashlie could make and I could buy. I'm going broke buying sunscreen to cover the twins at my older daughters soccer games and summer isn't even here yet. Quote
Candle Man Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 I may be wrong but I thought I read somewhere that if you use a SPF your product is no longer a B&B product but now a cosmetic, and that falls under the FDA. Quote
sudsnwicks Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 Yes, what Candle Man said is true. You could not advertise your product as having SPF 15 or whatever. As for shea butter being able to provide sun protection, I was thinking of doing that just for personal use. Quote
Candle Man Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 OH Robin,Give us the correct info on SPF in products, PLEASE. Quote
sockmonkey Posted May 5, 2006 Posted May 5, 2006 Maybe I don't understand your question, but in order to get anything identified as "SPF" I'm sure you will need to have it professionally tested before you can make any claims about its rating if you intend on selling it. Quote
Bunny Posted May 6, 2006 Posted May 6, 2006 Even if you don't sell it, if you don't get it tested you'll never know if your formulation has any protection. One ingredient you put in may mess up the whole batch making the ingredients that offer SPF protection weaker, and you might even do more damage than good. Very tricky stuff. Quote

I really want to put some TD in lotion for my mom and I and see how it goes...but it's so far down on the list that it will never get done. Quote
