So I made an 8 oz Mason jar candle using joy wax from NG. I auded pink sugar cookies from Candle Science as the fragrance oil. I used the temps posted on NG to add fo, and to pur. Waiting a week to test. Also sold 2 to my neighbor. Cold throw was good. Hot throw was excellent. I stood there while my neighbor burned the candle and scent was awesome. I used mine in my bedroom which is pretty big. Again scent was awesome. Here comes the issue. As the candle gets used up, there is so much soot, it blackened the glass. I stopped using mine. Neighbor called me today and tells me I have to give you some feedback on your candle. It almost caught my house in fire. I walked over and got the candle. So he burns them for hours on end. Unsure if he was burning it were there is a draft or not. Then I look at the candle from the side and see that he had about 1/4 of wax left. I show him the care instructions underneath the candle and advise him to not leave the candle unattended, ever. Also to discontinue to use the candle when there is only 1/4 left. There was melted wax (pool) of more than 1/4 but I stuck my finder and side of candle shows little left. So whet went wrong? Also got insurance today. Who would be responsible if his place catches on fire? Please help. sounds like classic overwicking from the story. 
 

when making candles, always test three before judging: 

1) test as a “perfect” customer. Trim, burn the hour per inch, etc. all the way to the end. 
 

2) burn like a typical customer. Never trimmed the wick. Burn for odd times. Again burn all the way to the end no matter how long that takes. 
 

3) power burn. Don’t trim wicks. Light it and don’t extinguish for many hours. This is how most people burn candles. Burn to the bitter end where there’s no more flame. If there’s too much wax gone use a wick tabs with a longer next and make sure to secure that tab with something permanent that won’t move. 
 

If at any point the candle container reaches temps that would make ASTM or UL call it a fail it is not ready to sell. 
UL typical standard is not to exceed 125*F for metal containers and 145*F (140 on some safety standards) for glass or ceramic. 
 

good luck!  Test, test then test again.  Nothing is worth a candle fire I. Your home or anyone else’s. Don’t rely on a safety sticker to get you out of legal trouble should something go wrong.

Thank you for the feedback. I do have to test a lot more. I used a cd8 from Candle Science if not mistaken, which Is supposed to work well for that jar and wax? Unsure if zink works better for that wax. I am changing to igi 6006 wax now, so will test with eco wicks. I got some different jars also 8 oz and 18 Mason jars. Hope that solves some of my issues. Also I tried 464 soy but very little hot throw. Made 30 plus candles and you have to be within a few feet to get a good hot throw or very small room. Very little shooting in that jar. Test test test. Trying to find a good wax thst will have less Way way over-wicked. Those are usually called "jelly jars" and usually need a smaller wick than the 8oz square mason jars. Either an Eco 1 or 2 (depending on the FO) will work in the jelly with Joy or 6006.
In my experience, you will waste time and money trying a lot of different waxes. Pick one and learn it inside and out. The waxes you mentioned can all work very well or they can all be dismal failures depending on the normal factors...FO, wick, cure time, etc.
