Salsa jar wicking

I don’t.

Where would you start with zinc wicks and paraffin wax with these jars? I was thinking the 51 size to start with. I'm having a hard time getting lids for apothecary jars so I guess I'll switch to these. I love the shape of them also.

I wish I used zinc and understood them well enough to recommend.

@bfrobertsmay know…

the salsa jars have a very subtle, but important shoulder and neck that makes convection an issue for double wicking soy (as in the OP question). I usually have heat issues through the life of the candle double wicking anything under about 4”.

It'll depend on the paraffin you are using.  The harder paraffins typically need a smaller wick than the softer paraffins like 4630, 4627, etc.  I'd say you are right on track starting your testing with 51z.  IIRC, with 4630 I typically had to use 60z or sometimes even 62z depending on the FO.  The harder waxes like mottling wax work great with a smaller wick.

What do you suppose causes that phenomenon? The petrolatum? One of these days we should do an experiment.

I wish I knew. I think it's partly that, but I'm not sure that's the only factor.  The softer waxes seem to be so viscous that the fuel just don't travel up the wick very efficiently  Also, the harder paraffins don't require all the wick adjustments for different FO's that softer waxes do.  With mottling wax, I can wick pretty much any FO in any specific container with the exact same wick.  The harder waxes burn significantly cleaner too.

Envious that you don’t have to play the wick game. 😂

ihave some mottling wax here somewhere.  It came unlabeled, so it’s anyone’s guess which block it is. I’ve always wanted to make something pretty with it.

Do you think that mottling wax has as good a throw as the softer waxes like4630? I've been using 4786 which is hard in my opinion and I love it but I'm thinking of trying mottling wax. I live in southeast Texas so I really need a harder wax if I'm ever going to do shows that are outside. It can be hot here in December! We've been having 80 degree weather here for the last several days. Not that 80 degrees would be too hot but in the spring and summer it's brutal!  I'm hoping it'll cool down soon.

Overall, yes, it has a comparable throw IME. It does benefit from curing. Some scents I’ve used just don’t reach their full potential immediately.

Where do you order yours from? One more question, have you ever used 4786 and if so what are your thoughts on that wax? Thank you for your help.
