As I mentioned in an earlier and somewhat related post... I am making another spinning wheel. So I've come to embrace the fact that I am a LAZY bastard. In an effort to save calories by not typing endless paragraphs I will use that energy instead on taking you gentle reader through this project via a slightly different manner.

Come, and embark upon a journey of strange sights as YOU experience the MAGIC of MY creation process through a series of still images.

Welcome to the FREAK SHOW!

Love all of it! Also waiting for the next installment, although I saw the finished piece in the other thread, is that cheating? Lol

You saw the finished piece? No... I wouldn't call it "cheating"... More like good planing. Say, I could really use the winning Florida Lottery Numbers for this coming Saturday, if ya don't mind...

Oh... You mean you saw that OLD wheel I made 10 years ago? Yeah. No. I'm doing something more weirder here, hence "the freak show"...

Sorry, I did do work on it tonight, but uh... While tonight wasn't the actually MOST DESTRUCTIVE mess I have ever made, tonight's superfund site was probably the messiest, impossibly difficult to clean up mess I think I have ever made *during a project* (relationships don't count). Not even the Ambien, ExLax, and Seneca disaster even comes CLOSE to the atrocities of tonight's undertakings... I'll just say I'm GLAD I didn't get stopped by the cops on my way home. 3.5 hours of clean up and 4 hours of reconstructive camouflage. I'll be out tomorrow as well, but I WILL be posting pictures of the next bits Friday.

Remember! If you can't see a problem, or otherwise detect a problem, there IS no problem. (Works great in relationships too. Trust me...)

PART 4 The next phase of gravy... AKA: Let me just do that ALL OVER AGAIN...

NEW FLYER! MO BETTER! And sanding... LOTS of sanding and that CRAPPY poly acrylic crap... DON'T USE THE POLYACRYLIC. Terrible stuff... just HORRIBLE! If you live in California then it's great, but that's because you can't get anything else... I'm just say'n if you can use the stuff that'll kill you... you should USE IT. ('sides the stuff that'll kill you is A LOT MORE fun in closed non-ventilated areas... The polyacrylic... NOT FUN.)

I'm still working on it... I haven't forgotten about the Freak Show, I'm just reworking some bits out because I realized that the "traditional" arraignment of the flyer and bobbin isn't actually very useful at all... I'm going to reverse the normal configuration where the base end of the Y of the flyer would normally be at the work side of the bobbin, I'm putting the base end of the flyer on the FAR side of the bobbin next to the drive whorl. This will leave the open top of the Y of the flyer facing the work side. To that end I also shortened each leg of the Y on the flyer to just a tad longer than the left most line shown in the picture above. Why? Because the end of the flyer now will not extend beyond the edge of the bobbin, or more importantly not past the breaking belt whorl of the bobbin. (If it did extend over the whorl it would hit the breaking band each time it tried to pass it.

I want to incorporate a ball bearing race at the end of the orifice so that the whole drive axle will have ball bearings which will make the wheel and flyer operate much more smoothly. Along these lines I think I have worked out a way to be able to very quickly swap bobbins out without the need for any tools or major adjustments. Just stop. Twist and pull the orifice off the axle, take the old bobbin off, drop a new bobbin (the bobbins have ball bearing races in them as well) on, lace the leader over the fly hooks, and slide and twist the orifice back into the locked position and place back into it's slot, and run the leader (no hook needed) back down through the eye of the orifice and out the orifice, and you're back to spinning. 15 second bobbin change out.

I'm working on it... More pictures will follow.

Hey Sponey,

Oh my gosh.....you never cease to amaze me.

Let me ask you this.....what are you making?   Well, I know it is a bobbin as I have actual real vintage bobbins like what you made I use for decorations on my mantle.

At first when I saw you starting out in this venture  I thought you were making candle lids and I was ready to place an order! ha!....But now I see what you have done.  Then I thought, oh what a cool looking toilet paper holder he is making.

So what are you making these for?    Just to pass the time? ha ! lol, lol

Well did you finish it yet?   You have it stained yet?

You know you are really genius in my eyes.   Just beautiful workmanship....:hello::bow::icon_awww:

It's a spinning wheel, for like yanno... shaving the fuzz off of sheep's butt's and torquing it so you can make strings to do, um, "Other kink(ish) stuff" with?
I'm old fashioned like that...

STAIN IT!? (the horror! shudder) I can't DO such a thing to beautiful blond wood like that... I'll leave my "staining" to other aspects of creativity... I haven't finished it yet. I've got to wait on some bits of hardware. I also need my dad to actually put one of the peices on his milling machine and cut a groove into the axle for me. If he still had the manual Bridgeport I'd have already done it but he's gone CNC and I have NO idea how to even turn the milling machine (or the CNC lathe for that matter) on, much less how to control it. Still these bits of stuff I could make but refuse to make because it's one of those rare cases where it is actually better to buy the thing made by a robot... ONE of these bits is called a steel ball plunger set screw and I know HOW to make it but for <$10 for FIVE, I'd be crazy to spend 16 hours making 2 of those.

Here's a link showing the ball plungers...

I'll have more to show later once the pieces parts get here and I can get that axle milled down. I'll be working on turning the orifice and assembling the work side maiden in the mean time.

Episode 8: The Birth and Exorcism of a Fore-maiden... (The DEVIL IS in the DETAILS.)

Per usual, I'm wandering around life (i.e. this forum) trying to figure out what's going on. But since I'm only looking at pictures, I'm seeing lots of torture tools .... and still don't know what's going on 😁 Reinventing the wheel? A guillotine maybe? Anyway, I'm staying tuned

Wow! I never thought about how many tiny details go into a simple early-times machine. It makes me look at the price tag on old and new wheels much more openly. (Also proves it is something I will NEVER attempt to make on my own 🤣)

Gosh, I am SO sorry it's taking me this LONG to get back...

Well, TBH, THIS particular wheel is my OWN personal design and a LARGE part of the reason it's taking SO damned long is 1. I am literally designing it as I go, and 2. I can only do certain critical parts of the work 1 day a week, and that's ONLY if I actually can get that day freed up... I'm also being SUPER FREAKISHLY Detailed about what I'm doing AND I'm correcting ALL of the shortcomings that I have experienced with other wheels.  So FAR I'm real please with how it's turning out. I'll be honest though, it IS starting to become a drag working on this thing EVERY SINGLE day I have off. (I only get 4 days a month off as of the last 3 months.)

BTW: TT, it's not really that hard to build one of these things, it's a VERY doable project for someone with intermediate woodworking skills. Technically you could make one with nothing but hand tools.

Anyway's I'm plug'n away at it.

And THIS is what I've been up to over the past week and a half!

EPISODE 9! (still going... NOTHING outlasts the Sponiegizer...)

The making of matched sets of wheel hubs with cone tips to ride on the inside of the ball bearing races, their pining to the wheel, and the balancing of the wheel.

EPISODE 10

THE CONCLUSION!!!

OK, so I've been AWOL for a while... I had to do a lot of refitting and fiddle-fark'n pieces parts into submission to my will, and it was, uh "INVOLVED". So I generally neglected to photo document my journey between the 8 refinishes (DO NOT USE THAT HORRIBLE POLYCRILIC TRASH FROM MIN WAX!!! Just use a good quality poly urethane and be done with it) and having to rebuild several parts that got broken from unfortunate gravity related incidences DIRECTLY RELATED TO THAT SunshineTY POLYCRYLIC NONSENSE... I gave up and just plowed through to get the damned thing DONE. And DONE IT IS!

Enjoy!
