Natasha M Posted December 26, 2017 Posted December 26, 2017 I’m trying to find out where I can get basic liability insurance. I’ve looked into HSCG but it’s almost $500 to cover soap and candles. That’s an arm and a leg at the moment. I don’t mind starting with candles only. Quote
Jcandleattic Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 With HSCG you aren't just buying insurance, you are also buying a memebership to the club, which is why it's so expensive. You can try RLI insurance and I think there are a few other places. I know it's a subject brought up quite often here, so you can do a search on insurance and see what comes up. 1 Quote
TallTayl Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 The membership part of HSMG pays for itself for me just in discounts to Office Depot. 1 Quote
Candybee Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 Coverage for soap and candles starts at $265. It goes up to $375 to include property coverage. I don't see any plans that cost $500. You sure you looked at the HSCG website? HSCG Comparative Insurance Costs Quote
Shari Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 You have to pay the 150.00 membership fee on top of the insurance cost. It's so worth it to me and give me a piece of mind. Quote

RLI no longer covers candles as far as I know. But honestly I think $500 for year including the membership is a bargain! The last year I crafted and sold my product liability insurance was several thousand. I've never found one as cheap as these. Quote
Flicker Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 Also remember, general liability insurance is NOT the same as product liability when shopping around. I wrote an article on this many moons ago that is still on The Candle Cauldron. 2 Quote
TallTayl Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 More and more venues require insurance to attend, and require they be named on the certificate. Insurance is simply a cost of doing business. 2 Quote
Natasha M Posted December 27, 2017 Author Posted December 27, 2017 Yes it’s those membership fees that bring up the price. I honestly don’t know if I’d be ready for a full blown business. Maybe within a year but even gifting a candle I make is a scary thought because some people are so sue friendly. A few family members & friends would gladly buy my products but I feel iffy not having insurance....I guess maybe HSCG would be the way to go. Quote
TallTayl Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 Make it part of your business plan. You’ll need to do the initial startup with whatever legal and license requirements necessary by your state/city anyway. indie business network is good too. Their forums are very helpful to new business owners. 2 Quote
