caradelrae Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 I made three pillars today and on all three of them, there is pinholes? on the top(which was the bottom) when I poured them. THe sides are nice and smooth, no problems. I even reached into the molds thinking there had to be bumps in them and nothing....I am at a loss.Cara Quote
Trish Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 Did you heat your molds before you poured? Sounds like either your molds or your wax was too hot... Quote
Quani Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 I have only been at this for a week or so and I havent been heating my molds but I havent had the pinhole problem (yet) My problem is mainly with bubbles and cracks... I am doing embeds and the bubble is always at the bottom or smack dab in the middle of my embedded pic. I think the cracks are from my cooling them in the fridge for too long. I have a lot less cracking when I cool them at room temp and then pop them in the fridge for about 2 minutes before removing them. Any other suggestions? Quote
SatinDucky Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 When I get them it's usually from pouring too hot or heating the molds too much. If I'm wanting a smooth finish and get pinholes, I use a water bath. What temp are you pouring?Quani-You'll probably get more responses if you start your own thread. In the meantime, with bubbles, it's likely your wax and/or mold are too cool. I've never had the fridge crack mine. Feeezer yes, fridge no. Those others have. What kind of wax is it? Quote
caradelrae Posted January 16, 2006 Author Posted January 16, 2006 Now that u mention it, i think i may have been pouring too hot. DH had me running twenty dif ways yesterday and chances are that it was too hot. Is about 190 a good temp to be pouring these? I want the smooth look!Cara Quote
Scented Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 At 190 you probably shouldn't have gotten them. If my mold is cooler than the wax I'm pouring, the splash of the wax into them will cause an air bubble. I generally just pour a little bit of wax into the mold and then zap it with my heat gun till the wax turns clear again. The bubbles rise to the surface. True, too much heat causes those things too. So does pouring too fast. Quote
wincie Posted January 16, 2006 Posted January 16, 2006 That happened to me alot when I just started making candles...I poured too hot and always got the pinholes...that's when you really start to realize the importance of using your themometer :rolleyes2! Quote
