blt212
So I'm trying to wick a 5" diameter pottery crock with c3 and citronella from NG. I've started with wood wicks but I don't think they are going to hold up with any wind. So far I tried 3-WW3's and got a full MP in an hour and blew out a couple of times, so went down to 3-WW2's and it's def burning slowly but the flames are weak and the throw is too and I'm sure they won't hold up to a slight breeze. What kind of wick should I be using....tried to find citronella wicks but not having much luck searching any of the usual candle suppliers except at the big wick places where you have to purchase 5000-10,000....also ordered some larger zinc's to see how they work. Would love some feedback since this is my first attempt at making a patio candle and not sure how big of a flame it should have....should I be tripling wicking or using one citronella wick. Thx for the help
ChrisR
I personally don't make pillars for outside, they just don't stay lit. I use small metal buckets with a handle and container wax, so I can use a bigger wick to get the throw I want. Hopefully someone will chime in that makes pillars. blt212
Hi Chris:Thanks for the input. Not making pillars....pouring in a pottery crock 5" diameter width. So far while the 3 wood wicks burned kind of quick they gave the best throw...also tried one large wood wick and while the flame was great, didn't get across the width. Still waiting on some citronella wicks and zinc's...
ChrisR
LOL I read that too!! The pails I have are about 4" around, I use (4) LX 14 wicks most of the time and I only fill the pail up to 2" from the top. I found that byfilling the pail full the wicks would go out with the least little breeze. By not filling them full seems to help with the wind problem. blt212
Oh that's a good idea about leaving them 2" from the top. I have some LX wicks.....I'll try those while I'm waiting for the others to arrive. Thank you!!
moonshine
I am not sure of the diameter of my metal pails but I use one CD22 In soy and it works well...Chris where do get your pails? Mine are not seamless and a couple have leaked after sealing them - I would like to sell some but not with this issueAlso just a FYI I made incense with citronella and Oregon trails bug off and stuck them in the ground around a campfire and it kept the Mosquitos away....just have to be careful if there are kids running around
ChrisR
I get mine at galvanizedpail.com. They do have a seam that I caulk on the inside & no leaking thus far. I also use the Bug Off and love that stuff, especially in lotion bars.
sandy511
Can I ask what percentage of Oregon Trails "Bug Off" you use in your lotion bars? I ....I ordered 16 oz. of the oil & it has been sitting on my counter for about 3 weeks now....

The Candle Nook
I’m trying some Citronella candles this summer (gotta love Texas!) and am intriqued with the Oregon Bug-off mentioned in this thread. Anybody have any advise on % of using these 2 oils in a candle?
