Guest EMercier
I must've done something wrong. I was making my crock soap (came here for help and thanks to younggrasshopper) and as much research and reading I've been doing, I think I still got it wrong!! I'm not sure if I put too much oil in it or the wrong oils or if my crock wasn't hot enough. It got thick, but it didn't get solid. It looks like a mess! It looks like a failed greasy cake! Here is the recipe I used (got off the net):10 oz. Shortening4 oz. Canola Oil2 oz. Olive oil / Soybean oil Mix 10%/90%2 oz. Lye1 C Distilled waterI melted the oils and added the lye mixture. I did a dummy and forgot the stick blender while I was at walmart, but used a regular blender (like for cakes) well, I was using the instructions I got from here under the B&B and it looked nothing like that thickness for the trace. Mine became custard and then went to mashed potatoes. I added FO mixed and then took out a bit for color (liquid) and mixed back in. Well, I put it into the mold and it just wasn't right. Woke up this morning and it still looked the same and broke apart like nasty cheese bread. It looked oily! PLEASE HELP!
younggrasshper
Honestly I think that it just didn't cook long enough. Mine always goes kind transparent and jelly like when its done. Next time will be better!I think I just found another problem! I ran it through 2 calculators and one said 4.something ounces of water and the other said 5.28oz of water. I'm not sure how much of an effect that would make, but I think it would at least need extra time to cook off! Hopefully someone will jump in here and let us know! TexasBrat
It does sound like it didn't cook long enough. I think mine ends up cooking for maybe 30 minutes. All crocs are different in temperature so yours may be hotter than mine etc. I notice mine is on it's way being done when it starts to sort of separate from the sides forming a glob. I wish I knew how to explain it better but it gets thick and while stirring it just sort of is different than just being liquid but ya, like sticky mashed potatoes. Then I know to add my fo and that makes it even thicker and then glob it in the mold and let it set for a few hours and then unmold.Try again...don't give up and get that stick blender. Guest EMercier
I might just switch to CP. How many towels would I have to wrap around my mold? OR, could I use a comforter? Also, does the room have to be a certain temperature? I don't have a cooler to put it in.

Well, It was in there longer than 30 minutes I know that. I went to check on it and it was like it was burning. My croc has just on and off. My oils and mixture was not bubbling or anything. I had the opposite reaction. I started around 10 and put it in the mold around 12. That's a bit long for soap. I'm checking out Robin's instructions now and it seems a bit more easier than the other instructions on here under the bath and body. TexasBrat
Looking at the lye calculator at MMS it looks like you had to much water and possibly not enough lye.
Guest EMercier
I checked it myself again and I did see that maybe I used too much water. It said 4-5 oz and I used a cup, which is equivalent to 8 oz. The lye was in the range as acceptable. If I went a little higher, would that change anything? Also, I dont' have a digital scale. I used an ounce kitchen scale I bought from the store. BUT, now if I went to CP, would I have to supper wrap the mold in a dencent room temperature? eugenia
That sounds like a crummy recipe to me. You don't have any cleansing oils in there and the shortening can be a lot of things. I'd also not recommend the mixed olive oil, and yes, too much water. As for the CP, any towels are fine. I'd start from scratch on the recipe and keep looking or ask for one here.e
Guest EMercier
Well, I've been on the miller website. I've asked for different recipes here and saw a basic one, but thought this wouldn't be that bad. I'll go with a basic olive oil recipe that calls for the olive oil (pure and not mixed), lye, and water. I'll run that through the lye calculator and see what happens. I'll also go get that stick blender as well! I'll try again after work.
eugenia
Pick up some castor oil if you can. 90% olive oil and 10% castor oil makes great soap. You can buy whatever is cheapest as long as it's not a mix. Pomace is fine for soap. The castor boosts the lather and custs the slime. This works well in the crock too. Can take a while to trace, so be prepared. Not knocking the Miller site, but it didn't look like a keeper of a recipe to me.e
Guest EMercier
I had castor oil in my hand last night and put it back! GREAT! It was 4 ounces. Well, I'll try it and see what happens. Was it OK to use my liquid color (B & B that I use for my lotions)?
eugenia
I'd assume so on the colorant but you may want to check the supplier's site and see what they say. I love castor in all my soaps.e
TexasBrat
You might want a digital scale too, they sell a postal one at Walmart for $19.99. It comes in handy and not just for making soap.
