candlesprite7 Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 Hi all! I am wondering how you would make a 12-hr candle. One that's meant to be lit in the morning and extinguish itself after 12 hours....any ideas?Like a skinny pillar? or a short pillar? What wax or blend would you use? Thanks so much! Quote
CelestialSoyCandles Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 What about a 4 or 6 oz slip tin candle??Heather Quote
topofmurrayhill Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 Idea #1 - Make a long dripless taper. Measure how far down it burns in 12 hours. Make it in the correct length.Idea #2 - Fill a little container with wax and choose a flat braid wick that trims to a good length in a marathon burn. Use a scale to measure the wax consumption rate in a long burn and calculate the amount of wax to fill it with for 12 hours.Idea #1 could be done as a short 2 inch pillar but it's harder to find a wax/wick combo that works and it's more dangerous to burn down to the end.Idea #2 is essentially a filled votive. The same approach could be used to design a molded votive, but you don't want a big flame so it will be a little stubby one. Quote
SatinDucky Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 Sounds like a votive to me. Though they may need to be made a bit smaller. Mine usually burn 14 to 15 hrs. Quote
candlesprite7 Posted January 4, 2006 Author Posted January 4, 2006 Thanks everyone! I'll try a few of those ideas and see what I can come up with... Quote
Scented Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 Or try clipping the wick where it ought to be a 12 hour burn and make the candle any ol' size. It might work. Burn a votive in a not so straight-sided and not so snug votive holder. Quote
SteveinPA Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 Make a pillar and burn it for 12 hours, then measure how far down it has burnt (measure it before lighting). Crimp a piece of small metal tubing on the wick at the place where you would like it to extinguish. Of course you will have to use the same wax formulation and FO (if desired) as the test candle. Hope this helps. Quote
candlesprite7 Posted January 4, 2006 Author Posted January 4, 2006 That's a good one too! Thanks! Quote
