ladysj
If I'm just using the gel as like a topping & not scenting does it matter that the items in the candle don't have gel safe fragrances? This may be a dumb question LOL
Candler
I've made plenty of these candles (beer candles) and have had no problems ever.

Jcandleattic
Gel safe really has more to do with the polarity of the scent, so as a topper it's fine. Most "Gel Safe" scents mean they will not cloud the gel and will remain clear. There are other factors of course, but that is the main one. Vicky_CO
Actually the main reason to use gel safe scent is so the gel does not separate from the FO (it can over time and make it an unsafe candle) and to keep a high FP(Flash Point) which is also safety reasons. Gel wax burns much hotter than other waxes. Secondary is clarity of the FO gel mix. As long as you are not scenting the gel wax you are pretty safe.
