  1. Hello everyone. I just signed up to this forum. I look forward to learning a lot and interacting with fellow candle makers! Little background; My wife and I are just getting started making candles. We live Right outside of Atlanta Ga. Once we perfect making them we are going to teach our 7 year old daughter how make the candles. Eventually we plan to let her do all the candle making, coloring, labeling, scent choices, etc. So candle making will be her hobby and her business, she is super excited about it. We’ve only made 2 candles so far. Products just arrived 4 days ago. We are using gb444 soy wax, fragrance oils from Aztec(that’s where all our products came from), 8oz patio jars, and wi-767 wicks. We test burned 1 with 24hr cure time(probably should have waited longer from everything I’ve read)and not getting strong hot throw at all. We are going to let the other one cure for 1 week. We added FO at 185 degrees and poured at 135. Candles look perfect and cold throw is good. We used 1.25oz of FO in 16oz of wax(both measured by weight and not volume) We plan to test pour a dozen or so tomorrow. Using different FO/wax ratios, different pour temps, different temps we add oil, etc. We are open to any advice, suggestions, and/or criticism. We are only four days into candle making so all help is appreciated. Thanks in advance. Ben
  2. hi all, can anyone explain why some fragrance oils cause headaches? i've been researching online and found out why but not exactly what ingredient or chemical causes the headache itself... can anyone recommend fragrance oils or suppliers for someone with a sensitive nose? who are your favorite suppliers for natural fragrance oils?
  3. trite but true i need help finding a soap base to suite my needs... i will list them needs as: THIS WILL BE LYE FREE SEA BUTTER ORGANIC IN LARGE QUANTITIES FARE TRADE IF CAN BE NO MILK OR OAT WOULD BE NICE IF IT HAD COCONUT OLIVE OIL TOO now let's see what you can come up with. BLESS YOU ALL BROTHERS AND SISTERS
  4. I have tried so many wicks but not sure why the flame of my candle just blows out like in 15 mins and also I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong the kind of jar I’m using is a Square mason 8oz glass jar. I’m not sure what kind of wick should I buy from amazon 😓
  5. Hello all, I am new to this but really need some advice when it comes to making soy candles. I have been making candles for almost a year now and have had great success at finally making a product that I feel confident with. Recently I filled an order for a client and something went terribly wrong. The candles were smoking heavily, the flame was flashing and out of control, and the glass jar on some broke. I have done some trouble shooting and tried adding the fragrance oil at a hotter wax temp, I’ve tried reducing the amount of oil I’m using but I keep getting the same result with this crazy flame. I am so confused as to how Ive been making candles for quite some time and never ran into this issue but now there is this weird problem. Has anyone else experienced this?? I feel so confused and would love some advice. Thanks!!
  6. I am new to making Bubble Bars and have found a couple of recipes I want to try but I have SLS not SLSA and am wondering if I use the same amount of SLS as I would SLSA? SLS is powder form not liquid. Also I have cocamide DEA that is called for in a recipe but would like to know a good sub for it since it is a possible carcinogen. TIA!!!
  7. My first time making candles, and all was going fine, until they all set. I was recommend using GB 464 Soy Wax, and was advised to play with pour temps. These are results I got going from left to right 120/110/105. if I go above 120 or below 100 I get sink holes. I used 1oz fragrance/1lb wax, and I used dye blocks. I made sure to heat the wax to 185 degrees, before adding anything. I also preheated all jars while wax was cooling so they were still warm during pour. Issues I am having. If you noticed the sandy colored one half of it is shiny looking, and the other half isn't, this was poured at 110 degrees, I only had 3 candles do this. It makes then look like they were poured more then once, but I assure you its one pour. 2nd issue I have is frosting. I personally like it, but my girlfriend doesn't so she want to get rid of as much frosting as possible. I took a hairdryer to them, since I don't have a heat gun, took forever, but it looked fine. 2 hours later, and I noticed the frosting was even worse. The result is the last one in the picture, the brown orange color. Any help to fix these is much appreciated.
  8. I used to make and sell candles 10+ years ago, and decided to start again for fun and extra cash. I looked at my old formula sheet to give me a starting point, and I am confused by it. LOL It shows that I took the amount of wax needed for a container and multiplied by 86%, then added in FO, dye, any additives, etc. For the life of me I cannot remember why I did that!! Can someone help an aging brain on this one? Was this to account for the difference in wax between a solid and liquid form?? Or was I just crazy back then? For instance, this show to make 2 jelly jars I would need 11.70 total volume of wax, which then separated out to 0.71 oz FO and 10.99 oz wax ,
  9. Can anyone review these? Looking for strong scent throws that smell great in general. I use max fragrance oil in my joy wax (parasoy) candles. I am looking for something for my mermaid candles and never really have any luck with tropical scents. Especially coconut... here are some fragrances I am looking at. http://www.justscent.com/twisted-mermaid-fragrance-oil.html http://www.justscent.com/candle-and-soap-supplies-pink-sands-type-fragrance-oil.html http://www.justscent.com/sea-salt-and-ocean-breezes-fragrance-oil.html http://www.justscent.com/candlemaking-soap-supplies-butt-naked-fragrance-oil.html http://www.theflamingcandle.com/candle-fragrance-oil/fragrance-oil-a-z/egyptian-amber-fragrance-oil/ http://www.theflamingcandle.com/candle-fragrance-oil/fragrance-oil-a-z/summer-scoop-type-fragrance-oil/ http://www.justscent.com/candlemaking-soap-supplies-summer-boardwalk-fragrance-oil-type.html
  10. Best gingerbread fragrance? Looking for the best one you guys have used for candles hands down from natures garden, just scent or flaming candle. Its one scent I am missing. Doesn't have to just be "gingerbread" it can be gingerbread cookie or whatever just need a good gingerbread scent. Please tell me your favorite ones and review them if you can! Only want strong smelling scents. I really want something that smells strong too, I want people to be able to walk in and smell the entire room with wonderful scent. If you have had your best be from a site I not listed please list anyways. Please give me your reviews!!! I use joy wax candles.
  11. I want to try mixing scents to make candles for myself and for friends. Anyone have any recipes they've made that turned out great? I'm looking to try everything! Please give me your best recipes! I plan on trying my first mix soon as I have wax ordered. I have done it once with vanilla, the wax I used was beeswax (has its own lil natural scent) caramel and cinnamon and it turned out pretty good. I think I did vanilla be the strongest in it, than caramel and last but not least, cinnamon. It came out smelling like a vanilla chai tea latte, everyone was obsessed with it lol.
  12. I am looking for real strong scents and already have some favorites from natures garden or flaming candle but I have never ordered from JS and they have a lot of unique things I would like to try. I was hoping someone could chime in and see if they've tried these scents before as I already googled a lot. I use parasoy candles and use max load possible. Here are the fragrances I wanted to try: VANILLA SNOWFLAKE BUTTERCREAM CRUNCH BUTTERSCOTCH BRULEE PEPPERMINT BARK MARSHMALLOW PEPPERMINT CHRISTMAS WISH CHRISTMAS BLIZZARD COTTON CANDY SUPER STRONG BAHAMA MAMA COCONUT CRAZY COTTON CANDY FROSTED CAKE COTTON CANDY FROSTING FAIRY DUST I'm pretty nervous ordering fragrances as I find coconuts and cake ones always smell like play dough. I had the candy cane vanilla FO from natures garden and no matter what type of wax I used it always smells like a a weird burnt smell when lit so I really want a good mint scent. Hoping someone can take the time to help me if they have used any of these!
  13. I have a few fragrances that I think may need special wicking but I am not sure how to do this as I am still new to candle making. I finally found a wick that works with my jars and gives mw great throw for scents like love spell or egyption amber but some scents just simply aren't smelling that strong. I made sure to read reviews before buying and others seems to have more success with these fragrances than I currently am so I was thinking that it could be that I need to wick it differently as I read sometimes that that is something you need to do. I made sure to use the same amount of dye and same color dye for EACH testing candle and the others are fine but these aren't so I am sure it's not the dye. right now these are the scents causing me issues: Birch & Black Pepper (Type) Fragrance Oil and Jamaica Me Crazy Fragrance Oil and Blue Raspberry Jolly Rancher (Type) Fragrance Oil All are from flaming candle and 1oz per candle as I like to have huge scent. I am using circular jars for testing and had them cure for 3 weeks. My wax is para/soy joy wax from NG. The wicks are from flaming candle and and CD 14 and the circular jars are 3" wide and 3 1/2" tall. Can someone help me figure out how to wick these scents?
  14. Whats better? I am trying to get the STRONGEST smelling candles possible. Parrafin is bad for the enviorment so I can't go there. Soy in my opinion sucks. I have beeswax. I have a 3.25" candle with vybar and 1 fragrance oil of campfire scent. It smells good and if i am near it I can smell it a bit and if I walk into the room I smell it the most..but I want candles that smell strong in general no matter where I am in my room. I am reading about coconut wax and supposedly they are great for scent throw. This site says beeswax can "trap" scent, is this true? Is coconut wax the way to go?
  15. My candles been burning for awhile now, few hours, and the scent no longer is there...I am using joy wax and NG coconut cream pie FO with a CD wick and vybar. Are my candles supposed to look separated like this? Why is it after awhile I can no longer smell it? Even if I leave the room and come back in.
  16. I have about 4" candles I am using joy wax for. I made one and allowed it to cure for two days (when I CALLED NG they said cure for two days) and using their coconut cream pie fragrance and some vybar. The smell was better than my other candles but not where I can smell it no matter where I am in my bedroom. Even if door is closed. That's a turn off for me since I want my candles to smell like bath and body ones. I want the BEST scent throw hands down. I made a new one using 1.5 fragrance and no seeping so I will test in a few days. My question is, did I mess up going with joy wax? They state its the best hot throw wax out there on their site but could be a bluff... Should I switch to pure paraffin? I am using CD wicks if it matters. Do I need to let the candle I lit yesterday cure a few more days before lighting it?
  17. I am having tunneling problems with my candles as of late. I have tried a variety of candle wicks with natures garden beeswax pellets. Currently I am using CD 20 with my jar being 3.5 inches from corner to corner. I use vybar to enhance my fragrance. When making the candles, I heat up to 180, pour 0.5-1.0 oz of fragrance at 160, and then pour at about 150. If i pour my fragrance below 160, then it will harden up as I pour. What can I do to fix this problem? CD 20 is the biggest wick I have used and it does not cover my entire candle. Please ignore my wood chipped desk!
  18. Has anyone used Hassle Free Hybrid Wax from candlesandsupply.com to make tarts? I've only made tarts a few times using ky parasoy and they turned out pretty good and I loved how easy it was!
