  1. I have to say I love this wax! Pretty much all my pillars are made with Palm wax. What I have found is that I poke the first relief hole when its setting up and then I use a drill bit and drill down 2/3rds of the way into the candle. I usually have to do one major repour and then a second little one to fill in the last little air bubbles.
  2. I've been buying all of my candles supply from Issaquah Candle, didn't know he was going out of business. I just placed an order from Peaks that should be arriving tomorrow. I would suggest looking at the co-op page for people getting together to buy large quantities to cut down on the shipping.
  3. Hey all, Been making pillars and votives for a few years and I am looking to branch out into the container end of things. I am looking to stay with the Astorlite brand as I have a dealer in my backyard so I don't have to pay shipping. Which one do you all recommend, J300, J223, J50 & Astorlite Q? If you go with a different blend which one and why? Also what is a good size container to start with? Thanks for all of your help!
  4. Your local hardware store has them. I think I picked mine up for about $15 from Home Depot. Can't live without it!
  5. 1) Every Palm wax that I have used, does crystalize. 2)MP is around 135, heat to 180 add scents/color, pour around 150 into ALUMINUM molds - heated to 140. If you don't use the aluminum molds you get a much smaller crysatlization look. 3)Yes 4)Not that I have a seen, but I only use aluminum molds. 5)I think Issaquah Candle Supply will ship to PO boxes since he will ship via USPS parcel post. I get all my wax from him, but I pick it up. I can tell you that right now I am using Astorlite F & PQ, but I am only going to work with the F as the new PQ is not working for me, though I loved it before the palm wax was changed.
  6. Tucker, I use a miter saw with a 160 tooth blade...the blade cost me a pretty penny. My husband and I had an extra miter saw around so we used it because I don't think I would be able to cut anything else and not get it coated in wax. When we cut the candles we cover everything in the shop because you do end up with wax dust everywhere and it can be a bit sticky. Also we taped up the whole thing so that the candles are a bit protected from scratches, dings and other things. I would not cut them on a table saw unless you build a really good jig and don't want to use it to cut wood again.
  7. Linda, As a bride who made her own candles for my wedding this past January I can see where you would want to go with this. I can tell you that I had been making candles on my own for years as gifts for friends, but I had never gone through the whole tested process. I had a year to make 350 candles and I can tell you that I was pouring the weekend before my wedding because of the testing process. I had wanted to scent my pillars that would be burning during our reception, but was given a great tip to not do so, as some people are allergic to the scents, plus having 150 candles buring inside a building when serving a meal-not always the best idea if they are scented.
  8. I go the totally untraditional way and I actually use a miter saw with a very fine saw blade on it...works great. I have setting for 9", 6" & 3" and that way my candles are always the same height. I also use a leveling platform when pouring my candles. I do get some shift as I am using wick pins and sometimes they don't end up being completely level. Since all of my candle making takes place in our shop in the garage, I don't have a stove to heat and I had always had problems trying to level candles out with pie tins, cookie sheets and any other way.
  9. The color turned out awesome and was a total smash. I am using Palm wax so you get some great color variations with the wax normally and the orange looked great. I also did some black ones as well. I also have some orders for Christmas candles now as I gave them to some friends hosting a party and everyone was raving about them and the cold throw is amazing, so is the hot. Thank you all! ps. I forgot to take pictures...one of these days!
  10. Thank you! I did start with the yellow and added the red to it...I now have a redish orange, but they aren't cool yet so I can't really tell what it will look like.
  11. I am heating up some wax right now to make some pumpkin pie spice and don't have any orange die, but do have peaks primary colors...so I am thinking equal parts red to yellow from what I remember in my art classes from elementary school....oh so long ago. What does anyone else think?
  12. Are your wicks primed? If they are not you will get air bubbles near them as the wicks will have some trapped air in them.
  13. Oh yeah, I can just see how excited my husband would be to see me coming at him with a lit candle...NOT. After the burns I have gotten just making candles, I think I will pass. I had never even seen the tv commercial nor heard about it, but I am the curious one who would love to actually see it in person. The guy sure poured the was fast on her back at the beginning of the commercial, so I think its a light-n-pour type thing...
  14. I have to say that when I made votives for my wedding this past January that my parents backyard smelled like roses and lavendar for a couple of days from the two boxes of them sitting on the deck for a day. I still have some left over and two of them, without burning, scent a 200 sq ft room, once they are burning they can be really powerful and I stayed at 3%.
  15. Glad I saw this thread as I just placed an order from Peaks and totally forgot that I get a free sample of FO for placing my order online...now can I find the box that my order came in???
  16. I have to say that I have never had a problem with Jim and he has thrown in a bunch of different samples, but then I pick up from him. He doesn't have an actually store that you can go into to see the product. I know that he is usually around the office in the 4-6pm time frame as that seems to be the times that he calls me.
