  1. Thank you very much, Stella. That was very helpful! I have never used stearic acid but I will pick some up and give it a try. Thanks again! :smiley2:
  2. I have been using soy wax for container candles for years but have always used palm wax for votive and pillars....due to environmental issues I do not use the palm wax anymore and bought some Cargill V1 votive pillar blend to try for the votives. I have played around with it a little bit pouring at different temps and I am getting cracks in the votives and some are even literally breaking in half when I pull them from the molds. Can I mix my C3 container wax with the votive wax? Will this help the cracks at all? What ratio would you recommend? I have never had any problems with their C3 wax and I love it but so far I am really hating the V1.
  3. "An LLC that is taxed as an S corp is still a limited liability company from a legal standpoint (subject to the laws governing limited liability companies in the state of formation); however, for tax purposes it is treated as an S corp. " Thanks for that link, it was helpful! But does that mean I still go about filing everything as an LLC? I have the paperwork to file a new business with the state but there is no option for an S Corp... Is this something I have to reister with the IRS after registering as an LLC? I'm sorry to be such a bother! I just want to make sure I understand this. Thanks for that link, it was helpful!
  4. I was confident that I was going to open my new business as an LLC but I spoke to an attorney on the phone and she told me I should definately choose the subchapter 5 election and be an S Corp. I later spoke to an accountant who made it seem that if I chose to do the S Corp that I then would not be an LLC. I was under the impression that if I chose S Corp I would still be an LLC it would just affect my taxes different....or are the two not connected? I'm confused! :embarasse
  5. Hello everyone! I am going to start operating as an LLC in the near future. I feel I have a pretty good understanding of everything I need to do and I feel confident that an LLC is the right way for me to operate as a business. Would you suggest using an attorney to set up my LLC, or go it alone? What would the advantages be of using an attorney?
  6. Hello all! I have been experimenting with the new Excel wax, right now I have been trying to figure out the wicks. Alot of people suggested the CD wicks and I have tried them but did not like them. They curled way too much for me and I just did not like them. Now I am test burning some with the LX wicks in them. I have used and LX-14, 16, and 18 in 8oz jj. The LX 14 was too small and tunnelled, the 16 and 18 both burned nicely but the scent throw is very weak... But I was really happy with the way they burned. At least when I used the CD wicks the throw was a bit stronger. Any suggestions on how to strengthen the throw? Will the throw be stronger if I let it cure longer? I really prefer to stay away from the CD wicks, but I have never used the CDN's and I have heard some good things about them...do you think these would work better than the CD or LX in this wax? Please help!
  7. Thanks, I think I am going to give the CD's a try in this wax. I had used them previously with another wax but noticed alot of mushrooming on the wicks and was not a big fan of that. Maybe they will work better for me in the new wax I will give them a try, thanks!
  8. Elliecat- thank you for your input. I did a test batch in the 8oz jelly jars with the following wicks and results- eco-4 - did not pool all the way across, flame is drowning after 2 hrs burning. eco-6-melt pool all the way across, was burning nice until 3 hrs burning then wick curled into wax and flame is small eco-8- same as above I know the eco wicks are supposed to have a curling affec to promote self trimming and all, but are they supposed to curl into the actual wax? Anything I can do to prevent this? I really liked the results of the eco-6 with the excel in the 8oz jar until it curled into the wax.
  9. Of course after posting this I looked around a bit more and pretty much found answers to the previous questions I had posted. Insurance seems pretty costly to me! But now I realize it is something I truly do need to have if I am going to continue selling candles...I will just have to kick things up a notch to be able to afford insurance cost's. One question that still remains for me is: Do I need to have a business liscense to get insurance or vice versa?
  10. Good morning, everyone. I have been making/selling candles to friends and family for the past 3 years now and have sold at a few craft shows. Word of mouth has been bringing me more and more customers over time and I was wondering how "big" do I have to get before I need to apply for a business liscense and need to have insurance? Does anyone know where I can get more info on this? Or maybe you can help me yourself? Is it expensive to have insurance? Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks!
  11. Thanks for the advice! I really appreciate it! I'm going to look in to the Cyclo and Golden Jojoba and decide which one to try first. Thanks again!
  12. Hey everyone! I have been thinking about trying to make some body/perfume oils. I have bought some from someone on ebay before and the ingredients listed were DPG and fragrance oil.. Is it really that simple? I already use DPG for my incense making, so I of course have fragrance oils on hand as well...I was wondering if I could really combine the two to make a skin safe perfume oil? I tried looking into it online but most sites say to use a base oil like grapeseed or jojoba..etc.... Also, if I can use DPG, what ratio would you suggest to use with the fragrance oil?
  13. Hey everyone. I am new to this site and came here looking for some advice. I have decided I'd like to use the new Excel wax, I am really happy with the appearance and the scent throw. I am in the process of finding a nice wick that I would like to use with it. I am awaiting the arrival of my ECO and LX wick sampler pack. Does anyone have any suggestions on which sizes you think would be a good place to start? I am using 8oz jelly jars (approx 2.5" diameter), 16oz jar (approx 3"), and also a 24oz balmoral vase jar (aprox 4" diameter). Could anyone suggest a good wick size to start at for each of those jars? For some reason it seems I also have to use at least one or two sizes larger wick than what is usually suggested from supplier websites, any idea why? I only use 1 oz fragrance per lb and usually 2 drops liquid dye per lb. I would greatly appreciate any help! Thanks
