Hello CT Family! I have a question about the burn of Palm Wax. Jeri and I are doing some testing to prep for incoming stock and we're having trouble. The Wax is labled as a container blend but I'm having a heck of a time wicking candles to acheive a full melt pool. The notes I have from IGI say "It is advisable to wick the candles so that they tunnel, giving a lantern-like effect when the burn, and the melt cup generally will tend to be fragile and break. It can be difficult to wick these of candles to get complete consumption..." I've only ever played with a pillar specific blend before, and know this wax is really hard, and un-huggable. I guess I just assumed that if this wax is labeled as a "container" blend wax, it will burn side to side like a container candle. So far I am using an 8oz Tumbler (2 3/4" in Diameter, 4 inches tall) and have tried several wicks: HTP 104, HTP 1212, and (60-44-18P). The paper core and the 1212 get the glass REALLY HOT, but come very close to full melt pool. THe 104 tunnels, giving you a beautiful lantern like affect, but I'm just not sure that's the proper burn. Anyone have any experience with a container blend Palm that could shed a little light on the proper burn of this wax? Thanks for the input. Hugs, Jessi

In my own candles, when I'm testing I always weigh 1 batch and then measure another batch of same FO. That's the only way I'll know what the scents will do. I write down which batch had better results (9 times out of 10 it's the weighed, IMO) and that's the one I use when I have make large batches. As a supplier, I recomend weighing FO because they are so different from scent to scent, and that's how we package our scents. I also like to recomend wieght because that's what our wax manufacturers base FO loads on. I will agree with Topofmurrayhill, however, by saying if it works for you then it isn't wrong. I truly believe candle making isl ike cooking. There's a basic way to do it, and once you get the basics, you can adjust to make the recipe your own. Just my view on the matter. Something else I have noticed, Citrus based Wax removers or any Orange Oil base cleanser is great for removing dye! It didn't exactly get the dye out of the grout between my tiles, but it definitely got it off the tile itself from my hands. Hope that helps! Jessi AAA Candle Supply, Inc

Hi Scentologist, They are actually referring to LX wicks. It's just another type of wick. Unfotunately I am not familiar with LX wicks, but just got some samples recently. I hope to start testing soon. (Yay!) Zinc wicks are a completely different type of wicks. Their sizes corespond with a series of numbers. Ex: (60-44-18 z), (51-32-18 z), (44-28-18 z)...etc Because they correspond with specific numbers, Extra Large is hard to peg. We refer to (60-44-18z) as Extra Large Zinc core in our Raw wicking. However, I have seen Zinc wicks with larger numbers at another supplier. I hope this helps to clear up some confusion. Happy Candle Making! Jessi AAA Candle Supply, Inc

Hi Lisa, and Welcome to the wonderful addiction of Candle Making! I have a few questions for you: What type of wax, specifically, are you using? Is it a hard wax? Does it already contain an additive? Is your Fragrance from a Supplier or a craft store? Depending on the type of wax, you may be able to add up to 1 1/2 ounces of fragrance per pound of wax. If the wax you are using is a "pre-blend" wax it may already have the additives you need. If that's the case, your vybar may be binding the fragrance into the wax, preventing the fragrance from actually throwing. Also, where your fragrance come from is very important. Most craft store fragrances are not as strong as fragrances you will find at a Candle Making Supplier. If you made it yesterday and burned it last night, it may be possible that you have candle nose. (Your nose is still aclimated to the smell and not as sensitive to it.) I hope that helps some.
