  1. I buy my scents from Candle Science for now only during their 1oz sales. I have been making candles and tarts just for myself and also testing for 2 years now (I keep a notebook) for when I get nerve enough to start selling at craft fairs...which is what I eventually want to do. I recommend the small sample sizes for testing until you know what you like and what works....but thats JMO. Oh, and you need to know how to work out percentages!!! 1lb=16oz 16x.06 (6%)= .96 (close enough to 1oz) So you would have a 6% fragrance load if you used 1oz of FO in 1lb of wax.
  2. Thanks everyone. I will keep burning this one just to see what happens. Next time I will use a lighter FO w/out color with the same wick just to see what happens. If I get the same results, I'll wick up and test again. If wicking up doesn't help, I may just give up on the container because I don't know if I want to venture into double wicking, even though I do like the container....it just may be too big for my liking. I do this for myself so I don't mind sticking with what works (I just noticed that maybe I should have put this in the veggie wax forum? I thought I had!)
  3. I bought a Libbey 5475 ( http://www.jarstore.com/catalog/product_detail_libbey.php?subid=196&pid=2245) from the Dollar Tree just to try it out for fun because I like the way it looks. I had a ton of HTP 126 wicks so I decided to start with that. I'm using CB 135 and CS moon lake musk (which I hate btw) at 8% with a little bit of blue soy chip for color. So far with half the candle burned, I've got hang up still but the wick flickers a lot. With a 3 hour burn, it gets a good melt pool and the jar is only very slightly warm. No black soot. Maybe I should try wicking up? Or maybe try double wicking, which I've never attempted because I've only ever used 8oz jj's. Or maybe just try a different FO first to see if it behaves any differently? Does anyone else use these jars with CB 135 and HTP's? I think I'll just wick up first with a different FO and go from there...... Don't know if I left anything out but does anyone have any suggestions???
  4. But you know, I was just thinking, the recommendation of wicks came from the makers of the wax we use! I know it's just a starting point, but to recommend a HTP 104-105 wick for a 2-3 inch diameter jar is crazy...at least for CB-135. For someone starting out, they may not know that it's just a "starting point" and think that's the wick they should use because that's what the wax maker's chart said. Oh well, it's just something I had noticed....
  5. Ooookay...gotcha. I kinda figured it had to do with wax. But now especially seeing someone who uses the same wax and same wicks, it's pretty obvious. I thought maybe it was me who was missing something and maybe using too small wicks for some reason but they do seem to always work nicely I'm considering trying out a different wax (in addition to what I'm already using, just for fun) so it looks like I'll definitely have to test wicks again. Thanks!
  6. I have read where people generally use HTP-83 and above wicks in the 8oz jelly jars using soy wax. This just blows my mind that a wick this big works well in that jar. Even on the ngiwax.com site it recommends starting with a 104-105 wick for a 2-3 inch diameter container and the 8oz jelly jars are 2.75. I started testing (CB-135) with a recommended HTP-104 and it was WAY too hot. I went down till I got to the HTP-73 and it seems perfect and that's what I've used now for every scent I've tried so far. Would the brand of soy wax cause such a big difference in wick size in the same jar?? I'm just curious....
  7. Hmmm, I'm very interested in the HT in these as well! Need to buy new wax soon so I'd like to check this out
  8. Yeah, try to pour at a cooler temp. Wait till it gets syrupy....not sure what exact temp that is but probably btwn 100-120 and then pour. Put the container candle in a box, microwave, or oven and let it cool. You should see better results
  9. I don't really have any issues with the CB-135, I like it just fine. I'm just wanting to check out another kind of wax to see if I might like something better....you know, see if the grass might be a little greener Since I've never worked with paraffin, I'm not sure what I'd be getting myself into so I figured I'd try a blend. I like the soy because it's easy to clean up and natural and I've heard that paraffin throws better so I'm interested to see if a different wax (blend) would give any better throw with some of the same benefits of the 100% soy. Whatever I buy, I'll be buying CB-135 with it, just because it's my old trusty! I've done some reading on the 6006 and it looks like I might not need to change my wicking all that much (I have all sizes of HTP's to test). I use regular 8oz jelly jars with an HTP-73 wick(after testing of course!) and it's worked for me well so far. The 6006 I've read is also easy to cut, like butter....which is a plus since I'm spoiled with the easy wax chips. I could always add the CB-135. I think maybe my mind is made up LOL Just wondering if there are any other waxes that I might be able to look into before I buy. I'll check out the C-3! I do this for fun, so I don't mind trying out a new wax
  10. I've only ever used CB-135 and recently I ran out and need to buy more wax. I've been thinking about trying out a soy/paraffin blend but I'm not sure what brands are available. Been thinking about 6006 but not crazy about the fact that it has way more paraffin than soy but I'm willing to try it. I use HTP wicks if that makes a difference..... Anyone have any recommendations for me to check out? I make container candles (wicked and wickless and tarts for my own use). Oh and I have checked out the sticky at the top but that didn't really help! Thanks!!
  11. I'm not sure what kind of wax you use or what percentage of oil you use but I made some tarts last weekend (Wildberry Mousse from CS) using CB 135 (soy container wax) using about 8% fragrance load and when I first melted it, it made the whole upstairs (about 1200 Sq ft) smell great! It was very strong! It's been about 3 days that it's been in the warmer just in my bedroom and I could smell it still when I walked into the house this afternoon...of course not as strong as first but definitely noticeable! I think it depends on how hot your warmer gets. If it gets really hot, it'll burn the FO off faster. I use a coffee cup warmer with a small glass bowl and it's perfect. And of course it depends on the FO itself. Some just aren't that strong or don't last very long. But I can usually get mine to last longer than 24 hours before replacing. Personally, I think they last way longer than YC tarts.
  12. I don't know if you are completely giving up on the CB 135 but that's the only wax I've ever used ( I make candles and tarts for personal use and to give to friends). I do very small batches at a time...usually just 12 oz of wax and 1 oz of oil. I use Candle Science oils too...looove those 1oz sample sales, perfect for my kind of usage and I have a ton to try It comes out to about 8%. I heat to 185, pour immediately into my pour pot and add any color. I let it get down to about 165-160 and add my FO and stir really well to incorporate the oil. I used to care about frosting and wet spots but if I'm just making it for myself, I don't care too much. BUT, if I do, then I cool till it starts to get thick and slushy like and then pour. Then I put the jars into the oven to cool. Once cool, clip the wick, screw on lid and let it cure for about a week. But really, the best thing is to not add FO at too low of a temp because it won't mix well into the wax and not add it too hot so that it burns off (at least this is what I've read!). And to let them cure for enough time!! I like the CB 135....it's easy to work with and the throw turns out really nice! Edited: Hmmm, I don't think I read your OP right....so you were making votives only? No containers? If that's the case, then disregard my advice (unless you eventually try containers!).
