  2. Clean dye off your counters with old or stinky frag oil. pour it, let it set and wipe off.
  3. I just don't want to upload a lot of things and then find out it is like feebay.
  4. It says they reserve the right to charge after 30 days or at a later date.. Do they charge after 30 days?
  5. I am open Tuesday-Saturday 11 to 5:30. I stay open until 6:30 on Thursday only. I wrote down what times people came in for the first 6 months. I never had anybody come in after 5-5:15 except for Thursday. Once is a great while somebody came in before 11, but not very often. I do my running before I open. The ups people sometimes want to deliver before 11 and they drop it at the florist next door. I am closed Sunday and Monday. Last Monday I went in to get some things and a couple of customers drove by and stopped, but usually nobody on Monday. I am in a high traffic area, across from a grocery store and right down form the middle and high school. I do not create at the shop, I don't want my insurance premiums to skyrocket. I doubt that the electric system could take it ayways. My building is from the 1800's. I carry some local artists and my own things, the rest is purchased. I am not a member of the Chamber, but have joined the Downtown Business Association. I am also a memeber of the DMMA and by carrying some magazines i get free advertising. I use Facebook and my website to promote, but it is really word of mouth. I have Santa coming into to visit several times this month and the advertising is free with the local paper. I also did the downtown open house, (free radio, internet and paper advertising) I had over 700 people in my store in a two hour time frame. I promoted small business Saturday with them also, we did very well. I plan on advertising in the Country Register next Month. I was at the FleaMarket for over 10 years and have a following from that. I tried coupons (6,000) but only received about 10 back. People do find you, you just have to be patient. The best advertising in a huge stack of business cards and some flyers laying on your counter. People new to my store always ask how is business and I tell them slow. They are very happy to take cards and flyers to give to their firends and put up at their local hangouts. Good Luck to you. I work alone so far, but I have my daughter and a few close friends who will step in if I have to go to the Doctors or whatever. When and if I ever get caught up, I may open on Monday, but never on Sunday, it is totally dead. PS, I keep cards to different shops in my area and hand them out when people ask, or they appear to be on a shopping day. They do the same for me. You would be surprised how many people will stop in after visiting the local antique mall or whatever.

  7. I reuse my canning jars every year. Some are from my Grandmother. Some I bought new (30 years ago) and some I have picked up at auctions. The only ones that have broken for me are the new ones. Occasionally I wll chip an old one in storage and not be able to can with it, but mostly they are still used every year. I have no access to used baby food jars as my Grandchildren are past that stage. I have seen some really cute ideas with them online, though. One uses graphics to make it look ike an old gerber jar and puts their information in the ingredients area. I bought some on line and did something similar for a couple of baby showers when my girls were pregnant. They went over very well. As for reusing candle jars. I sell mine so I don't get them back. On of my Aunt's washes hers out and uses them for canning. If you are afraid to reuse them for candles, there are many other things you can do with them. I have had many new jars break. The worst for it are the ones you use on the jar warmers. Perhaps they are not made to be kept warm that long? As for the snooty replies and such, if somebodies replies bug you there is a "block" you can puton them, so you don't see anything they say. It makes for weird reading sometimes...
  8. I used to use a supplier for a lot of my scents, not all of hers were strong, but I found some I really liked and sold well. She seems to be either well liked or hated on this board, she had a sale and I tried a few that were supposed to be great. They were pretty good so i continued to order from her. I got in a bunch of oils and one had weird white floaties in it. I emailed and called and was told it was supposed to be that way. Basically tough poop. They were pretty rude about it. About the same time, on another board, somebody had problems with her before and said she would not use her again. Well, she was in need of a scent and ordered it and on the packing slip, it said Thought you wasn't gonna order from me again? Well that creeped me out!. Most of us do not use our real names on boards, so this supplier was watching the boards so close and being a little detective and figured out who was who. No thanks. I ordered from other companies. I found new scents and have not went back to her website since. I look at it like this. My Grandkids love ham and cheese sandwiches, but if I am out, they will look for something else and usually find something they like better....
  9. I give my email address to suppliers. I want them to email me the link to my shipping information. I join the newsletters and have them automatically go into an email file, when I want to order from them, I look into that file and see what they have on sale, etc.. There used to be a popular saying...shit happens, well spam happens. I wouldn't blame it on a supplier. They do not have to "harvest and sell your email. There are all kinds of ways to get your email. I have a bunch of websites and I do not drop one because of spam..... I block it, etc. Just like I do for my personal emails. Perhpas you can go onto your servers and check your email if you are sfraid to download it to your computer. Maybe you should follow the advise from others here and have an email just for ordering. Maybe use yahoo for ordering. Hotmail, facebook, myspace they all have free easy access email that you do not have to download. I don't understand that you would rather give your cc before your email. But then my Grandfather went crazy whenever anybody asked for his "tax number" He even kept the letter the government sent him when he got his ss number stating he never had to tell it to anybody except the federal government.
  10. I sell them. I don't male my own anymore. I figured in pricing, shipping, time labels and mess and saved myself a huge headache and just buy them already done up. I occasionally make up a few of my own when I get a request, but I price them much higher. I buy them for 60 cents an oz bottled, labeled, etc. I sell mostly natural scents and really my customers for the oils are not the same as my candle/tart customers. I couldn't sell the naturals in my candle line at all. I bought a display and listened to what they wanted I added to it, based on what the oil people asked for, read up on their requests and it seems a lot of those have uses in aromatherapy and wicca. I don't carry EO, but they don't seem to care. I just started carrying 2 oz of 12 of the most requested and they realy like those, I do very well with my own diffusers, sprays and butters, though. I hated making my own oils, though. Really hated it. If I did it again, I would do them in small spray bottles.
  11. I searched the board for the scents people repeatedly said were good and ordered those when she had a sale. (So do your research). Then one winter I got in some of her oils, there was weird white and gray floatie stuff in them. I called and they told me it would go away, it was from the cold, and they would not take them back or refund my money. I have not ordered anything from them since. I refuse to strain my oils to get weird stuff out of the bottles. I have never had floaties from anybody else, either. Had she replaced them or offered me a refund, I might still be a customer, but she was quite unwilling and blamed it all on the weather. Not all of the bottles had it, and amazingly it was a couple in the middle of the box. I recently went through all my inventory and still have a large amount of her scents that still have not sold. She does have good sales, but what good is it, if they are not consistant and do not stand behind their products. There are a lot of oil companies out there who do stand behind their product, and have great oils.
  12. I carry about 250 scents. I am mostly tarts so it is not that big of a deal. I was up to over 300, but we got rid of some that are very much alike. I do the 8 oz masons and a 16 wickless for the canlde warmer people. I am also a country store and people seem to like a lot of choices and very cluttered look. We tried cutting back more, but people have their favorites...
  13. I use paypal for credit cards. I run them through a knuckle buster, (go to ebay for the plate they are about 5 bucks). I enter them into paypal and then I shred them. Heres why. They can only do a chargeback for up to 90 days on their credit card. Paypal will fight the charge back for you, although they do like the signed slip, so many people do it over the phone, so it really is not a big deal. In all the time and cc's I have taken I have had one chargeback. Paypla fought it and won. It is totally worth my piece of mind to shred them immediately. I do not have the worry that somebody may break into my house and steal other people's information from me. A locked safe is where they would steal from first. I do not tell my customers this. I have recently changed from coming home and entering them to entering the numbers while my customer stands there, this season has been awful with bad checks and cards with no money, so now, no checks (unless I know them) and cc's over the phone. I am looking to buy a netbook to be able to enter them more quickly soon. Just can't decide. I would just take my laptop, but then when I have other people working they would need it to take cc's, so some kind of mini book is needed. I would not keep a years worth of somebody else's cc's anywhere in my house, if you have to keep them, I would outsource it. Maybe a safe deposit box or something.
  14. quickbooks and other money programs have an "invoice function" you could use that.
  15. I learned to keep all receipts, for everything. You never know when you will get audited and have to show proof of your purchase. I have a big basket, every receipt goes into it, at the end of the month I empty it into a file envelope and begin again. Much better than a big box of receipts and the irs asking you for one little piece of paper.
  16. I sell bakery scents 10 to one at all times of the year. Perhaps you should test your market before deciding what your customers will want. Also perhaps you should say you are sorry to all the candle makers for your post. And before you call most of us low end, perhaps you should use a spellchecker?? Oh, and good luck starting out making a fifty dollar candle, we all wish we could get that out of one candle....
  17. qvc has them. I use mine all the time. Smoke has never been a problem for me. I keep the lids on them though.
  18. Some of those have other rules, I have a frined that paints beutiful paintings and her local artists gallery specified where she could show her art other than at their place. I forget what her rent was but they took commission also. She stayed at the gallery because it brought her so much business and she was allowed to take web and orders, just couldn't sell or have a gallery anywhere close. she rented a cute little shop and was actually open and painting there and they said no way.
  19. I think most shows have rules against picture taking.
  20. check this auction out. http://cgi.ebay.com/EVERYTHING-YOU-NEED-FOR-A-CANDLE-MAKING-BUSINESS_W0QQitemZ250418867371QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item3a4e20acab&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A1%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A0%7C293%3A3%7C294%3A50
  21. I think you minimum is fine. It doesn't pay yo to make them if they order less. You will have to decide if you should charge more, I have a tiered pricing structure. I sell them cheaper the more they order as I can get the supplies cheaper and employees if needed for the larger orders. You could try it that way. Most people will tell you to take the cash in hand over consignment or at least get a nice contract if you decide to do it.
  22. Vanyulay has a ball bearing mold. It would work, didn't seem like it was all that expensive.
  23. I have molds from pretty much all of them, plus some I have no idea where they came from. The blue silicone sux, I mean really it does. They ripped and tore and didnt even last a year. The ones are flexible molds are not silicone, they are rubber. I have only received yellow ones. They are quite flexible and great for flat stuff and a you can cut the larger ones and use a rubber band. She will pretty much make you anything you ever wanted and she is totally trustworthy. She bends over backwards for her customers. She has some neat stuff on her site, she ships quick and is very friendly. If you need a whole lot email her with what you want to make and what you are thinking of getting. She will help make sure you are buying the right size for the right size. The handyman is good for flat stuff, maybe crusts and stuff. I have an awful time with the little stuff when the molds get older, they are golden when you get them, they turn a deep brown color over time. They have a discount on shipping when you buy so much. I have never had one rip or anything. His wife makes nice silicone molds and they do have a shipping discount, but she is quite expensive. Her molds are good. Midwest makes wonderful molds and they are silicone, I love her cakes and such, very easy to unmold and she makes your stuff fast, her molds last forever, and she stands behind her work, she will also make things for you. Vanyulay (Monica) has the coolest silicone of all, this stuff turns insode out, demolds perfectly, nothing stickys, no rubber bands, etc. She is higher than rubber molds, but very reasonable for silicone. They have always been white for me. I have never had a bad mold and she ships super quick. If you email her and tell her what you want she will help you with it, for example I needed a bunch of one kind of mold, she made me a deal and put it on her website, at a discount. She will also make you anything you might need or want. I asked her for a heart mold with roses in it last year for Valentines and she made a eautiful one and it fits the dollar tree heart glass perfectly. I am hoping she can make a starts one out of the star jar for 4th of July this year.
