  1. Beautiful candles and beautiful shots! I'm still pretty new at this and still learning; would you mind telling me what wax you used for the top pillars and that beautiful blue mottle?
  2. Ooo! So pretty! Makes me yearn for spring...
  3. Awww, thanks for the kind encouragement, KoalaGirl!
  4. Lol, ya live & ya learn! That's why I'm so glad to have this board...
  5. I think you achieved your goal on the color matching! They look really beautiful.
  6. Thanks again for the continued help! I feel confident about the glass questions now; color doesn't matter and safe to re-use so long as it's not going for sale/gift. Mixed views on the >1 wick. I think I'll start testing with 1 on my 3" and 2 on my 4" jars. As for wax, I've been playing with IGI 4630, GW 464 & Glass Glow. Richard, good luck with your 5" jar! Thanks, Stella, I actually didn't know that you do different relief work on pillars depending on the wax type. I thought what you did for any pillar you did for all. I have both IGI 4625 & the Feathered Palm that I'll be experimenting with. I don't think I'll ever be selling my candles, but who knows. I do this because I use so many candles myself & I enjoy making them. They're also great gifts for family, friends and co-workers who are just thrilled with the containers I've given them so far. Right now, my priority is making a safe and properly burning pillar. I work on the aesthetics later! Thanks all again!
  7. Hi, Steve, thanks so much for the input! After one bad experience, I now am very careful about which glassware I buy. & Top, I always find your answers so clear and easy to understand. They really help me get the principles behind what I'm wondering about so I can start figuring things out on my own. Thanks!
  8. Hi, List. I have yet a few more random & amateur questions, if you please. (I thought you might prefer that I group them together instead of spamming the board!). Info on any of them would be greatly appreciated: 1. Should I worry about reusing glass test containers multiple times? Is there a danger that the glass becomes more prone to shatter if it's continuously reused? (I am using only glass recommended for candles) 2. Does the color of the glass container noticeable affect burn test results? I.e., if I test a wick/FO/wax combo in a 2 ¾" diameter red glass tumbler can I safely trust that it would work the same way in the blue or frosted version of that tumbler? I wouldn't think it would make a difference but thought I'd ask... 3. Are there any rough guidelines for when you start to think of double or even triple wicking a container or pillar? Like +3" diameter = 2 wicks, +4" = 3 wick? Do you then automatically start to think of going down one wick size than you'd typically be trying if you were single wicking the container. I know you have to test, test, test but I'm hoping for some jumping off points. 4. How do you handle relief holes for layered pillars? I haven't seen any posts on double pouring each layer (and I've searched the forum for all of these questions!) but if you just pour the second layer on top of the relief holes of the first, you'd get random "tubes" of the second color showing through the first as it burns, no? I know I ask a lot of super basic questions but you all can't believe how helpful this forum has been in expanding my knowledge and skill over the last several months. Every time I come here and read (practically daily!) I just get all fired up over all the different projects I'm going to try next. Sincere thanks!
  9. Thanks, Top. I'm still at the point where I can't justify spending the bucks on an infrared thermometer (I'd rather spend it on FO ). Right now I'm using my old glass candy thermo or, occasionally, the electronic one I jam into my turkeys & roasts. I'll file the info for future. Being still new at this, I guess I thought that if there was a "standard" like the ASTM, then anyone who sold their candles were obligated to make sure they complied. If that was the case, I imagine someone would have figured out a quick and dirty way to do it! Thanks again!
  10. Thanks, Stella, that's how I've been testing it so far! But, I'm thinking that since everyone has a somewhat different tolerance level for what's "too hot" by the hand-to-the-glass method, I wondered if there was a good "official" way.
  11. Hi, reviving this thread to ask.... what's the best way to check the temp of a container? Is it just the same as whatever reading I'd get of the MP? Thanks.
  12. Asking for help, yet again! I'm trying to find the black metal covers I found in an Anchor Hocking Special Markets catalog I came across but I can't seem to find anyone who sells them. The link is here: http://www.anchorhocking.com/pdf/SpecialtyCatalog.pdf?catid=93%20%20target= They're on catalog page 11. I've been able to buy the shiny & matte silver covers they show and I'm not looking for screw on tops, just the "press on" with the inner fitment like shown. Any help will, as always, be appreciated.
  13. Thank you both for the ideas! On the heart shaped bowls at the Dollar Tree link...I have seen those around but the description seems to indicate that they aren't for pouring directly into so I didn't consider them. I've already been burned by jumping the gun when I first started a couple of months back. I bought a couple a dozen jars that I loved the look of only to find out that they weren't recommended by the manufacturer for use as candle containers. :embarasse I want to make sure I don't do that again! Thanks for the ideas again, all. I'll probably go with the tins.
  14. Oh, these will do just fine, thank you 8-Gran! I've ordered packaging & decorating supplies from Papermart before and was pleased with them.
  15. Thanks, Jan. Trouble is, I live in New York City & we're a Walmart Free Zone, lol. The nearest one is in the next state. They don't seem to have them on their web site, either. Does anyone have an online source??
  16. Hi, all. I'm having a hard time finding heart shaped glass containers or tins online and I'm wondering if anyone has a good source. The only tins I can find are wedding favor boxes that are a bit too small at 2.25 x 1 inch. The only glass I see is the Libbey Heart Bowl which is described as being for floating candles, not for pouring in. Any ideas greatly appreciated!
  17. I think it's really lovely and such a sweet sentiment!
  18. Good evening all. I'm shopping online for various jars I might like to use and I don't know how to estimate the volume they'll hold. I'm trying to find a fairly straight sided cylinder or bowl that will hold 1 lb. of paraffin with a 1/2 to 1 inch head room. I know that's approximately 20 oz. volume melted. When the manufacturer or supplier says 22 oz., let's say, does that generally mean 22 oz. to overflow or to natural fill line? CS will tell you this for most of their jars but no one else I've come across does. (But then, I don't understand why different jars they have listed as having the same oz. have different overflow amounts stated.) Thanks in advance.
  19. Great! Thank you! (I still have some much to learn. )
  20. Hi, all. I made a bunch of container candles two days ago that I'm planning to give as gifts and I'm antsy to get them packed up and out of the way so I can start my next projects. How soon after the candle cools is it okay to start bagging or boxing them? What about placing lids? Will it affect the curing time if they're wrapped too soon? What other problems might I run into? Thanks!
  21. The search feature is my friend, I found the answer. Thanks again for the info!
  22. Thanks for your advice. I fell like an impatient 5 year old! How long is long enough for curing? I've been waiting one week.
  23. Thank you! Thank you! This will speed things up nicely.
  24. Hi, I hope you won't mind if I hijack your question a bit... Being still new at this (and rather dense) I guess I thought you had to cure before testing the wick as well as the scent throw. It's what I've been doing! Can I just get clarification on whether I don't need to wait past initial cooling for wick testing in any kind of wax or container/form?
