  1. It's all down to your situation I guess. I'm new to candle making, and so far only make for family and friends, but am starting to do some fairs soon. I'm currently working with 20 different scents, but as I go I'll probably add more. What you have to remember is the amount of time and money to test each new scent you add. Adding to many to soon could be expensive, time wise for testing and cost a fair bit of money too. I started off with 6 and added more as soon as I was happy with the scents I had tested. If your new like myself, I'd recommend starting off with 6 or so and add more as you go along. I find that i'm always looking to add new scents, but have to look at my wallet and free time first.
  2. hi there, i'm new to this myself, but a problem I found was wick choice. I found at the start that on 2nd or 3rd test burn my flame wasn't as good, and therefore my hot throw wasn't as good. I fixed this by going up a wick. Dont know if this is relevant or not, but you could try it. HTH:smiley2:
  3. Thanks for the advice folks. I'm just in from work, so I'm gonna give it a go. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out. This will be the first time i've tried making a multi-coloured candle, so i'm looking forward to giving it a go.
  4. Sorry forgot to mention the wax. I'm using parafin wax. Was busy reading other posts on the subject (should have done b4 i posted:embarasse ), and i'm going to try and do a rustic layered pillar. Thanks for the info, thats what I've gathered from old posts, so i'll give it a go. Pour a layer, swirl it about, wait until it has a hard layer, then do another layer, all at 150f. Thanks again for the advice. This forum is a minefield of advice. I've lots of ideas I want to try, but i'll work at them one at a time. I'm still testing my first container candles, they're just small 4oz jars, so in between testing them I'll work on the candle for my neice.
  5. Hi all. I'm just learning to make candles at the moment, and enjoying it, but I have a question about multi coloured pillars. My niece was visiting this weekend and has begged me to make her a colourful candle for her mum's birthday, so I want to get it right. I'm going to pour 3 layers of colour, but what i'm not sure about is the interval between pouring layers. Do I pour each layer, poke relief holes then wait until the mold is room temp before pouring the next layer? I think this is right but i'm not sure. TIA for any advice:grin2:
  6. Hi guys, I'm very new myself, only started about a month ago, but the idea of a template never occurred to me:embarasse . Thanks for the great tip, I'll give it a go myself tomorrow. Thanks for the advice.
  7. Just wondering if any of the uk members have ordered scents from the States? What way does it work with import tax, and how would you go about it? Do you pay everything when you order from an American company, or do you pay for your order and shipping, then pay import tax in the UK? I'm tempted to order a few different scents from Peaks, but was wondering if the cost of import is prohibitive. TIA for any responses.
  8. Hi there, i'm rather new to candle making, just started actually, and have a question about additives. When making container candles, do I just use Vybar, or do I add stearin as well. Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question, but i'm not 100% sure. The wax i'm using is parrafin container wax from candle lights in the uk. Also for pillars, using parafin pillar wax, do i just add stearin? I think i have the quantities right, 1-2 % for vybar and 5-10% for stearin. TIA for any help.:smiley2:
