  1. I am in Canada too and look wistfully at all the great prices in the States. BUT - the shipping is always so high that that great price isn't so great by the time you are done. Lots of thing just aren't offered here. I have 2 Canadian suppliers that I use one more expensive than the other but the shipping is lower. Would really love votive clamshells but no one sells them here.
  2. Now that I have my candles out in stores people are starting to ask about home parties. I have 2 booked already. I have figured out my percentages for the hostess, gifts and door prizes. BUT - I can't figure out how many different scents to make up. I'm leaning towards making top ten scents then providing a list of all the scents available so that if someone has a favourite smell not there it can be ordered. For those of you who do parties how many scents do you make up? I make Soy candles, tarts, tealights, bath salts, tub truffles and soap. I also have tart warmers and votive holders. I have put baskets together, (salts, soap, candle) (truffles, soap, candle) (tealights, tarts, warmer) (votives and votive holder) Plus have single product. Just the scent question driving me crazy!!! Can't possibly make all the scents I have but don't want to have too few choices.....Help!!!
  3. I use Marlo packaging. They are in Kitchener, Ontario.
  4. I have been fine tuning my order all weekend. Came here this morning and found this thread. Now I don't know if I should go ahead with it or not????
  5. Got a wholesale account today!! Not a large one but heck any order is a good one when you're getting started!! Also sold 8 aroma sachets to a lady while i was out doing errands today (stopped in her office) AND I am leaving samples with an order form at my kids school (including made up baskets for mothers day)!! Will pick up next friday and deliver for mothers day (small school - not many teachers!) Hopefully there'll be one or two orders.... My day ROCKED!!!! Forgot to add that I made Neopolitan Candles today angled and there was a BIG interest in those.... took pictures but can't find my cables to download onto computer...
  6. Now to figure out what to put out. Have been making baskets for mothers day. I have jars, votives, melts and tealights (all in soy) Then there is the bath stuff... tub truffles, bath salts and milk baths.....Want to focus on a few instead of all....also have aroma beads and ornies.
  7. busy weekend poured: sea salt, coffee, lilac, clean cotton, sweetgrass and lemon merangue pie in glass jars, made blueberry muffin tarts in the clamshells and in tealights. Have been making mothers day baskets up as well. Have aroma beads soaking in clean cotton and am about to start on the bamboo containers!!
  8. yep - insurance, business registered and vendors permit!!
  9. I use Village Craft all the time. My order is usually here within 3 days of placing!! I use canwax too but shipping takes little longer. Both places have awesome customer service! I'm also going to the Candle retreat put on by village craft this year.:tiptoe:
  10. A friend of mine has been trying my candles and loves them!! Her husband owns a small pharmacy. He called and and said they'd like to help promote me. He says I can "have" a couple of shelves in his store to make up a display. No charge - they just want to help!! Was also approached by a dance company wanting to use me for a fundraiser. Need to give them the brochures and go over details. Crossing my fingers.
  11. Funny you should say: "4. Upon seeing a candle burning in a movie or tv program, you will pause and rewind the show to see if you can a) tell what brand it is and see if it is burning properly. (Annoys the hell out of my husband!)" did that the other night. Forget what we were watching but noticed a group of pillers burning and went back to "get a better look". Hubby was NOT impressed. ...lol I'm forever shoving something under his nose and asking what he thinks of the smell... now when he sees me coming he 'remembers' he forgot to do something in the garage! Dollar stores are great! Who knew a dollar could add up so fast and become $80, $90 or more... I have been having fun with fragrances. Already have WAY more of those than shoes.....have been making triple layer candles. well... back to the wax pot!!
  12. I tried the inspirational stones and the mini cinnamon buns last night and it worked great! I got the molds from www.flexiblemolds.com -- my supplier carries them but their prices are much higher so I thought I would go straight to them. I was really looking forward to making the pies - sorry to hear the pie crust doesn't work as well with the soy. Will still give it a shot and see what happens. when you use these molds how do you wick? wick pin doesn't work (although I did stick it in upside down in the cinnamon mold) any tips on wicking?
  13. Got my new molds today and can't wait to try them. I got: pie crust, whole strawberries, blueberries, raspberries (anyone see a theme yet..lol) whipped cream dollops, inspirational stones, cookies, small and large cinnamon buns. Of course I ordered all these before finding that some people have problems using these molds with soy. Has anyone used these successfully? Any tips would be appreciated.
  14. After researching, testing, testing and more testing (who knew I had so many friends..lol) I finally got my business license and vendors permit!! I am so excited. I have designed my business cards and am ready to send them to the printer (Staples). The school my kids go to has already booked me for a Christmas fundraiser for this coming year (yeah!). I am working on my brochures for business and for fundraising. I have my lists of places I want to drop off samples and brochures. A plus is that I work at a little gift store and the owner loves my soy candles and tub truffles so she carries them (on consignment) in the store. It's not much but they are out there and I get to speak to people about them. Small steps - no big leaps here. I am also attending a Candle Retreat in May that my supplier puts on every year. Super excited! Have been investigating craft fairs but haven't found many in my area. Thanks to everyone on this board for all their great ideas and endless information!!
  15. I finally have all of my ingredients ready! It says to add hot water... do you boil the distilled water? Hoping to make this tonight!
  16. when your candle needs more than one wick? Want to start making food candles. All of your muffins and pies look so yummy! is there a certain distance that the wicks have to be apart?
  17. when making muffins or mini loaves do you use piller wax or votive or container? also: How big does a candle need to be before you start adding more wicks? For example: the banana nut loaves should they have 2 wicks? Thanks and sorry for all the questions.
  18. I have been working with el soy for some time now. I have been making mostly container candles and tarts. Tried a few votives but had a hard time wicking (more practise needed - and kept cutting my fingers on the rims. Ouch!!) Am wondering if you can make piller candles with just soy or does it need to be a blend? Have loved looking through the forums. There are amazing projects on here! Lots of great ideas!
