  1. I found it hard to look for the candle info I wrote down in my notebook, I am still in the testing stage of many jars, wickless, and scents. I started writing all the info on a notecard and when I test, I just pull the card (alphabetical by scent for me) and have it handy for testing info. I store them in a recipe box have. It works for me and its all in one place.
  2. I have one and love it. I use tarts on it all the time. The only thing I've noticed is that the bottom can get very hot b/c of the tea light, so I ALWAYS use a stone or ceramic coaster under it. I would include one or make a note on it. I have never burned my furniture, but I wouldn't want to take a chance, especially on wood. HTH
  3. I collect Hull brown drip pottery, dishes, plates...I love them and use them during the Fall and for my Thanksgiving dinners. I was wondering if anyone knows if they are safe for candles. They can go into the oven and are very thick, so I'm thinking yes. I would just hate to ruin them. They are just for me, not selling. Any thoughts?
  4. Thanks for all your input. I didn't pour today, but I did light some candles (before reading this). Tomorrow I will use all the will power I possess to NOT burn or pour any candles...my husband and kids will really think I'm sick (or just plain crazy!). I never really thought about the wax or scents affecting my health - stupid me! It is finally cooling off here, so at least I can start opening the windows. The mask is another good idea, but I sure will miss the yummy smells. At least I have lots of options before going to the doc., which always is my last resort. I wonder how many people have these same issues, probably more than I thought. So thanks again, I wasn't sure if I was just over-reacting. Happy and healthy candle making to all!!!
  5. I hope I don't sound too stupid...but I have noticed that when I pour lots (for me, a novice), of candles during the day, by 9 pm, all I do is sneeze, snuffle, and blow my nose. I have notice this more when I pour more candles, but I can't outweigh the elements (pollen, dust, bugs...I live in the South, on the coast). I never had allergies before, but doctors say you can get - adult allergies - what that means, I don't know. All I do know is I CAN NOT breath threw my nose and I'm sick of blowing it ALL NIGHT LONG! So, seriously, can pouring candles affect this or do I really need to take that painful allergy test I have been recommended. TIA
  6. My first reaction "holy crap" out loud, no less. These are awesome, can I order an acid trip as well! I don't make soap and can't even imagine how you could create such awesome and many colors in soap! I'm thinking my deodorant soap may have to be tossed, just so I can enjoy my showers and baths this much more. You are awesome!
  7. Went to my Walmart yesterday, and all the status jars (which I love and use) are gone, as well as the flowerpot jars. The tag is even gone, so I'm guessing they are gone for good. Big Bummer!
  8. So beautiful, you should be proud!
  9. It is the weight of wax and fo. The water idea is just to give you a general amount. Always weigh your ingredients, I found this out the hard way. Its not 16 fluid oz., its 16 ounces net weight. Hope this helps. I have found some other calculators that have helped me figure out the fo percent I want for any amount of wax. I will look for it and if you are interested I'll post it for you. This all can be very confusing, slowly, but surely, I'm learning more everday. I guess I actually learn more from my mistakes than my successes at this point, probably b/c I have more the first. Good luck!

    ?'s on wickless

I have read a ton on wickless candles and love the info. A few questions I didn't find or overlooked. How long do you, and/or how long is it safe to burn a wickless candle? If you burn a wicked candle on a warmer, what happens and/or what do you do with the wick? Do you color your TIN jars, since you can only see the color from above? Some say the candles last longer, but others say the scent doesn't last longer (guessing maybe the wax coul€ last longer, but scent fads quicker? Anyone use 10 or 16 ounce candelinas for these, seem to fit, short and spout (when I get all steamed up, hear me SHOUT!...) Any help would be great! TIA
  11. Apparantly my thoughts aren't shared by many, b/c over 300 people have visted this site, but only a few share responses, none which have even acknowleged my post. If you think I'm way off base, let me know. But why can any of you complain about "big business" (without becoming too political, I'm not against) if you won't even give your two cents?
  12. Just a little thought for you all... About 6 or 7 years ago my mom bought my sister and I candles that looked liked a group of yellow lemons. I have moved 6 times in 5 yrs, (restuarant management both dh and me), and lost mine upon the way. A month ago, I was at my sister's house and went to do the dishes, and wouldn't you know it, she STILL had her lemon candle in her kitchen window! I did say something to her about how have you keep it this long?" She just said that she loves it and it is so nice. I thought that was so awesome. As much as I hate that mine was lost in so many moves, it was so cool seeing hers. It is weird how one candle candle can remind you of a specfiec point in time. I think my sis thought I was crazy for even remembering it, but she did and we laughed about how mom always buys us stuff that others think is just silly...notice what is kept and remembered. Just thought I share and smile.
  13. I have no idea what an electric candle is...should I be embarassed!? But I must say these are really cool! They look awesome and I'd love to know more about them.
  14. I have heard of metal tape, no clue of what it is or where to get it. I'm sure Lowes has it, do I just ask where metal tape is (love to save any embarassment, as I tend to bring on enough without trying :tiptoe: :tiptoe: :tiptoe: How do you use it? Any help would be great! TIA
  15. Yes, that IS an outragous amount of money for a candle. In addition to posting here, we ALL should email Oprah about what we all do! I think it is VERY important to let her know that there are "mom and pop" candlemakers that create beautiful and safe products for a reasonable price. If we want people to take interest in what we do (I personally don't sell yet b/c I am new), HOMEMADE QUALITY candles, we need to point out to people who think a $150 candle does not mean squat! If you think I am out of line, okay, but if you agree, please connect to this link and let Oprah know. I do think she's a great lady and maybe she just doesn't know there are so many awesome candlemakers like us out there. Just my two cents...I mean $200 worth Here's the link and please let us know your thoughts. http://www.oprah.com/email/email_landing.jhtml
  16. On the same note (sort of), I have never used wick pins, just the sticky wax tabs. Sometimes they work, sometimes not. It might sound crazy, but any chance duct tape might work to plug the whole? I mean it works on everything else...Hope this isn't totally out there, I really think it could work.
  17. Love this thread! My sister is due in August. I already made here a, yes you guessed it, baby powder, blue colored (hum, she's having a girl ) JJ. But before I made it I was thinking how cool it would be to make one in a bottle, but after having two babies knew all were plastic. But there is hope, although like you all said the glass bottles are expensive. I'll have to do more research and see if its worth it for her shower, or if I should spend the money on diapers for the little guy. Boring, but practical. I think I would prefer fun over practical, he's going to be my first nefew after all:yay: Love to hear any updates you find and I'll let you know what I find. Thanks for the input!
  18. Nice to see there are others out there. My digital camara broke - CHRISTMAS night no less, at least Gram and PaPa were here with there camara. Haven't bought another one yet because you'll never believe where my extra money has gone  As soon as I buy one, l will definetly get some pics up. Love to see any you all have. I have to get back to it, I do miss it. I have to say though, I do go in spurts, once I start I can't stop. I'm sure that sounds familiar. Hey, maybe if we actually get back in our scrapbook stuff we could do a swap. If anyone would be interested, please post. We could start sharing what we need, kids stuff, wedding stuff, colors...you name it. Hope to see some interest, this would be a good reason to look through what we have and get inspired to start scrappin' again. I'm going to subscribe to this thread so I remember to check it often! Take care. Melanie
  19. Thanks so much. I hope I'm not the only one who was confused.
  20. Hi there and welcome. I can tell you'll fit right in here - great sense of humer is a must in candle making. I am new since Jan. and have learned more that I ever thought. I have been going through the archives a lot lately and there is tons of great info there, as well - definetly go through them when you get a chance. Have fun. Melanie :highfive:
  21. I'm reading you all are are adding flour, but what about the straight salt rocks? I just seems like so much work for the same outcome, plus, the pure salt rocks seem "prettier" PLEASE I DO NOT MEAN ANYTHING AGAINST the others. I am new and really don't want to get black balled. I just don't get the whole process? I have seen salt pellets, the bigger, whitish (if a word) salt pellets used and they too are nice. Like I said I'm new so PLEASE excuse any lack of info I have
  22. I am confused... Why do the container volumes say one thing, but the actual volume is different? 8 oz jj really hold 6 oz wax, 8 oz tins really hold 6 oz wax, 11 oz tumblers really hold 8 oz wax, and 8 oz roly poly really hold 9 oz wax. I don't get it? Do you claim the actual size of the jar or the actual volume of wax? It seems misleading to say it is an 8 oz jar, when it really is only 6 oz. Hope I explained myself. Please, any info would be greatly appreciated, I'm just confused. TIA
  23. This thread is awesome. I have made several different fragrances so far. I'm using Morton Ice Cream Salt 4 pounds for a buck. I didn't know how it work, so I started small. If you use rock salt, make sure it is Mortons or one that you have seen, because some are gray - Morton's is white and if you wash it it gets quite clear. I have noticed a big difference in the rocks I heat compared to the rocks in a glass jar, but even the unheated smell good. What a great find*super banana* .
  24. Well it isn't perfect, but I have a GREAT hot throw for once! The wicks are too small, after 2 hrs little wick. BUT like I said, great cold and hot throw. I'm pretty sure I need to wick up, but how great to smell a candle after all this testing. I use ecosoya pure and this was a tester with HTP 83. I have not had much success with HTP's, but at least this time I have something. Thinking CD 10 will actually work - cross your fingers. I just can't believe how great it is when something (throw) actually works!!! It has been out for at least an hour and I can still smell it, even after making candles earlier. This might seem like a lttle achievement, but I'm sure most of you know where I'm coming from. Anyway, its the little things thant make this all worth while and knowing we WILL figure this all out - yes, test, test, test. Yea, test again. Sorry, ok not, for the blab! Take care! Melanoe
