  1. The description says "hand made wood lids", so looks like someone is making them.
  2. Made some revisions per suggestions here: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dhcfdppr_94hkdht
  3. You are very welcome to use it and modify it any way you would like. Let me know if you need an e-mail of the original Word file. Google documents still has a few kinks to work out.
  4. I've just started making container candles and have really only poured a few times. I still testing jars and wax and wicks and I'm becoming inundated with paper!! I found a candle test sheet on the internet but the way it is set up is basically one sheet per candle. So, if I make up a 1 pound of batch of wax, and pour it into 4-6 different jars with different wicks then I have 4-6 pages of notes. It's a little cumbersome and time consuming and I find myself not filling it out completely. So, I've come up with a new form that has the info on the batch at the top and then a place for notes and info on each different container/wick combo that I pour from that batch. Am I missing anything? Anything you would change? This is intended to be printed as a two sided sheet, so most batches would be one page. If needed additional copies of page two could be added. http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dhcfdppr_8g4tz8t Thanks!
  5. I actually got those ideas from a home-made wine bottling website. They of course don't have to deal with heat, but I thought it might be a good starting point. I didn't take offense, and some of those suggestions do sound kinda funny, but I think they might be a very simple solution to your problem. I understand the idea of having something in your head that you want to try, and even though people tell you there are easier ways to do it you still want to try the idea in you head. I like the idea of kind of a rough edged paper sack label, so I see where you are coming from and don't know that you could get that look with pre-cut labels. You might be able to hand tear craft label sheets and get the rough look you are going for, if you do decide that pasting on your own is not the way to go.
  6. What's funny? They were serious suggestions. Not all at the same time, but serious nonetheless.
  7. Some things you might try: Milk glue sticks flour and water (paper mache paste) diluted wallpaper paste
  8. They do have the flat rate on orders under $25 if you don't have surplus on it. If it is over $25 then they have extremely high shipping. If you are only buying FO's or molds, or some other things that they have sister sites for then you can qualify for some of their free shipping deals, but if you try to use them as a one stop shop the shipping will eat you alive. It is outragous. I know they would get so much more business if they could get a handle on their shipping charges. I hear the same thing about WSP at all the forums.
  9. I'm going to mess with it some more this weekend. I'll get aggresive with the heat gun and see how that does. I just don't want to screw with the integrity of the glass so I don't think that is going to be the right option. I'm going to try some strippers and paint removers. I'd love to buy the rest of these jars if I can find an easy way to remove the stripes. Actually, I kinda like the stripes, so I'm going to also try some glossy paint to cover the wording. I've used some acrylics that I had on hand, but it has a matte finish and the stripe is glossy. Sharpie works pretty good, but you can still see the impression where it says American Candle. They look really good from a distance, but if anyone looks at them up close they will be able to see it. I'm not going to give up on them yet, though. Here are my first candles!! Left to right: Fresh Orange Slices, Sparkling Green Tea Garden, Lucious Cheesecake, Fudge Browne, Forbidden Pomegranate, and Fuzzy Navel
  10. Hmmm..........I don't have anything resembling a 40Z in my pack that is long enough. Looks like a 44-20-18Z is the smallest I have in that pack that is long enough. I guess I'll start there.
  11. Oh sorry, It's J50 wax and the jar is about 3 3/4" wide, with a bit narrower (3 inch) neck.
  12. I've wicked up as far as I can (62-52-18) with a zinc wick in these 16 oz apothecary jars and I'm still not getting a complete melt pool. If I were to double wick this jar where should I start testing? Or should I give up on the zinc and just say I need to use a CD or HTP with this jar. I'm getting alot of soot with the CD. I haven't finished testing the HTP on this jar. I'm just trying each of the three types of wicks I have with each jar. Is there a better method to this madness? Thanks! Deedra
  13. Already got the heat gun. It doesn't look like it's going to work on the wording but I haven't gotten real aggressive with it yet. Ima skeered I'm gonna burn the house down.
  14. Opps........ I can't wick down the CD. It was a CD-4. I'm trying the next smaller zinc, but I'm happy with the HTP too. Do I need to test other wicks too? I bought a sample set of each of the lines Bittercreek South carries.
  15. The HTP and the CD both burned 3 1/2 hours. The zinc I had only burned for an hour when I posted. It ended up being about an inch deep when I blew it out. I'm going with the HTP for the one's I'm pouring now and the next one's I pour I will wick down on the CD and the zinc.
  16. OK, I'm testing my first candles. I'm using J50 container wax. I'm using a 4 oz tall jelly jar. I've tested three different wicks. One HTP, one CD, and one zinc. They all gave me complete melt pools. The HTP gave me a 1/4 inch deep melt pool, the CD gave me a 3/4 inch deep melt pool and the zinc seems to be holding steady at about 1/2 inch. Which is optimal or are all acceptable? Thanks!
  17. I just mentioned a heat gun to DH and he said...."Oh.....I could use one of those!" So sounds like he wouldn't object to my spending money on that.
  18. Grubby jars? Off to search! BTW.........Acetone isn't touching it. I may try some stripper. I bought all that was on the shelf (35) and then the manager came out and said she has another 200 in the back. So, 200 jars would be $10. If I can make these work somehow that's the deal of the century!!
  19. Thanks for the responses. I may go see if they are still there. I don't really plan on selling candles any time soon, but I don't know if I want to have someone else's logo on my candles. I may pick up some paints and experiment with it. I could just use black and fill in the writing so it would just have a black line around it. I could probably find a similar jar down the road if I decide I like the style.
  20. Also, if I do use them and like them I won't be able to find them again.
  21. I was just in Family Dollar and they had some jars (looked like maybe a 16 oz apothecary jar with no lids) marked down to 5 cents each! But, they said American Candle on the side. They looked exactly like these except a smaller size. http://www.american-candle.com/product.php?productid=97&cat=29&page=1 The writing is screen printed, so it doesn't look like it could be removed. So, my handmade candles would look like commercial candles. Is there some sort of paint that could be used to cover it up that would withstand the heat of burning the candle? It seems like a bargain, but then again do I want my candles to look like they came from this company, instead of my very own?
  22. Ah! Ha! Now I know what I'm going to do with all the cheap Wal-Mart candles I've got laying around!!! (Cause you know once I start pouring my own I'll never touch them again.) Plus it will give me something to do til my wax gets here!
  23. I've got a case of J50 coming. I was really only planning on making containers, but looking at the gallery.............wellllllllll...............you probably know how that goes. I've got a good supply of beeswax from some beekeeper friends, and will have my own supply someday if I can ever get my beehive to make it through a winter. So, is it possible to add beeswax to a container wax to make it firm enough to make other things? If so, what percentage would I try? If beeswax won't work is there something else that might? Or would I have to purchase another wax altogether. Thanks!
