Best place for Wick Stick'ums
jenphelps1972 replied to ChandlerJane's topic in General Candle Making Discussions
I got mine from Lonestar. Never had a problem....until just the past couple of weeks it has gotten really cold. What a pain. I too work in my basement. That is where my new craft room is, and the heating is even piped in there. Go figure. -
** What's in your pot this week/end? **
jenphelps1972 replied to RobinInOR's topic in General Candle Making Discussions
Well, three weeks until showtime. This weekend I'm going to make snow balls and grubby pillars out of some straight parafin I bought when I first started out. Could not find a good use for it as it frosts really badly, but frosting wont be an issue if I whip it into snow and slap it onto the outside of my balls and pillars. Not sure yet what scents I will be doing, but I have several that need used up. I'm determined not to order anymore until I have my credit card paid off that I used to buy all my supplies to start this crazy hobby. But I love it. Except the pressure is on to get it all done. Off I go to the pouring cell. -

This weekend, hubby and I are finishing up my craft/sewing/pouring room!!!! Woooo Hoooo!!!! He finished sanding the drywall this morning....ceiling was stomped on Thursday. This afternoon after I poured four cookie sheets full for chunks, DH went to work. Well so did I girls!!!! I went in that new room and I got rid of all the mounds of drywall dust, all the trash, wiped down the walls, scrubbed the floor and then primed the walls. DH is going to finish up the outlets and my huge light in the morning then I'm gonna paint. OOOHHHHH I cant wait to pour in my new room!!!!!!!!!!! Ya'll just dont know how excited I am!!! Anyways, the chunks I poured are in Spiced Apple. I did two sheets in red and two in green then I will pour white over them. That should make bunches of pints and jj, and hexes. Cant wait for my shows to be over so I can get some R and R. This old chick is pooped. *faint* -
Help with cd wicks
jenphelps1972 replied to jenphelps1972's topic in General Candle Making Discussions
Thank you both for you expertise. I believe I will just stick with the zinc;) -
Well, I finally thought I'd try something other than my zinc core wicks. So I ordered some cd wicks. I got 18 and 20 for my large pillars and cd 10 for my containers....I do 8 oz jelly jars and 16 oz pints...also do 9 oz hex jars. The cd 10 was like a smoke stack in the jelly jar and hex. Since I am new to this...is this too large of a wick for these jars? The 18 and 20 worked great in my pillars. Could it be my harmony blend wax isnt real compatible with the cd wick? Jump on in experts, share your experience with me. I love the idea of a self trimming wick, but not if it turns the ceiling black!

I love cinnamon as well. After I mix my FO in and get that first big wiff in my face, I feel all flushed and tingly. It makes my DH get all stuffed up and congested. But we can handle that...just no more sex on the beach. I ended having to take some phenergan to quell the nausea. Never pouring that again. Anyone else have any FO's that make them ill?

Today I poured juniper breeze, honeysuckle, rain, and sex on the beach. Ever since pouring sex on the beach, I've felt nauseous. Has anyone else had this experience?

Very cute! Those are adorable snowmen.

Test Burn Problem
jenphelps1972 replied to gingerinarkansas's topic in General Candle Making Discussions
AMEN! I agree. We knock ourselves out with testing and having the perfect wick, and perfect throw. Its impossible to know where our candles will be burnt once they leave our hands. Personally I enjoy having one lit on the deck on a cool starry night curled up with an afghan and my sweetie. But it will burn differently than one sitting on the countertop in the kitchen. Some things are just better reckoned with. :highfive: -
How do you make cinnamon buns?
jenphelps1972 replied to jenphelps1972's topic in General Candle Making Discussions
Thanks Scented and Portia. So...where is a good place to find one of these molds? -
I've seen several pics of the cinnamon bun candles. Any tips on how to make these? Do you have to have a mold? Or can I pour my wax out on a cookie sheet, slice in strips while still pliable and roll up around the wick. The latter scenario sounds like it would work, but I want some expert advice. Also, can i sprinkle these with real cinnamon once rolled up before I drizzle "glaze" over top? Or would that create burning issues?

Well, I've not poured for two weeks now...waiting for hubby to get my craft room finished. It was previously a storage room with no drywall and a concrete floor as it is down in the basement. Needless to say, it is coming along slowly. So tonight, I am going to have him set me up in the rec room downstairs with a big table, my presto pot and all my stuff. I have two different shows coming up...one on Dec 1 and one on Dec 2. YIKES:shocked2: And I have loads of containers waiting to be filled. So my goal this weekend will be to fill all the christmas tins I bought last weekend, all the christmas mugs, and a couple dozen jelly jars. Plus I just got in a big shipment of fragrance and wicks, so I'm all set. Not sure what all I will be pouring, but the only time my pot will be empty will be when I am cleaning it out for the next batch Have a great and productive weekend everyone! -
TGIF Hubby and I went out to eat this evening and then went to browse at the dollar general store here in town. Of course I was drawn to the candle aisle. Oh dear oh dear. Every single candle had WET SPOTS:eek: ...or bubbles as some call them, but they were not attractive at all! Here I am pointing to all those yucky candles saying...this is why I am making candles. To provide others with unique scents and quality. Woooo hoooooo! I cant wait to go downstairs and pour!

I love the harmony blend, but have not tried any other container blends. So of course I love it. I made my first "perfect" container candle with it :highfive: -

Thank you all for your kind remarks. I've only been making candles for about four weeks now. I really enjoy it. Those snow balls were a real hassle...one of my molds leaked... I was so cranky I nearly threw the entire thing in the trash....wax, mold, and all. Thankfully I perservered, and they turned out nice. But such work! Not sure it will be worth it, depends on what kind of money I get out of them. If they dont sell for what I want...I may just have to keep them for myself As for the peanut butter chunkies....I made chunks scented...you guessed it...peanut butter and other chunks scented hersheys chocolate. The over coat is scented with sugar cookie dough. I have one burning now and it smells yummm. This is so much fun!!!! Now lets just pray its a profitable hobby. -
This a sampling of what I did this weekend. The rose colored one is apple cinnamon, the peachy one is orange dreamcicle, the chunkies are peanutbutter cup surprise, the snowballs are peppermint, and the votive and tarts are creamy vanilla. Please forgive nothing is labeled or packaged yet...just couldnt wait to share.

I've conquered containers, votives and pillars. But how do ya make a tart without a dent in the middle of it? I'm currently using my pillar wax to make them. I'm thinking about mixing a bit of my container blend with my pillar blend to try it. Any suggestions?:rolleyes2

Hello, I'm a newbie too, however, I have poured enough to know what I like. My favorite container wax is IGI-4630A, otherwise known as Harmony Blend. It's only about a dollar a pound. It is messy to handle until you get it in the pour pot....kind of like hard vasoline. But this wax makes a gorgeous container candle and it only requires one pour. You make have to use a heat gun once to take care of any bubbles or to get a perfect flat top. I love it! Trust me, I've tried the "crappy" wax. It was straight parafin and I didn't know any better. Also make sure you warm those containers so the wax adheres to the container. My favorite pillar wax is IGI-4625A. I also use this for my votives for right now. This wax does require a second pour and for larger candles perhaps a third pour. Be sure to read all the instructions on this site and have them set in your head. Both of these waxes already have the additives in them. So melt, scent, dye, and pour. ENJOY!
