Same here. I've used Astorlite V for about 40 batches of tarts in varying scents & suppliers & I was disappointed in the throw of all of them. The cold throw was almost nonexistent & there was only one scent that had a good hot throw (Baby Powder from Makes Scents). I changed to KY Parasoy & I really like it a lot. It's much better for me than Astorlite. Now if I just knew what to do with the 10 lbs I have left.

Those are really pretty. They look so creamy! My favorite is the orange & I'm not even a fan of orange! I bet they smell really good. Magan

Holy crap! You know, I had been using Astorlite V for a couple of weeks & had thought that it was soy wax so I was heating it in the microwave like my regular soy. I did this for a couple of weeks before I finally realized that it was a blend! I thought for sure that it was soy. I felt like a big a$$ for not paying better attention because what happened to you could have surely happened to me. As for the presto, you're going to love love love it! It's so much easier & quicker than the microwave. If it were me I wouldn't leave it on for any longer than necessary. Not only because it's dangerous to leave it unattended but because there's really no use in it. It will melt the wax in a matter of minutes, way shorter time than the microwave does. When you get the wax you need just unplug it & the wax will harden & be ready for the next time. If you want to take your wax out just let it harden then turn the presto on for just a minute or less & then you can just take the wax right out & pop it in a baggie. I'm still trying to decide if I want to add a spigot or not to the pot. I see the benefits in doing so but right now it's fine without. Good luck!

You'll get tons of feedback & experience. Most of the time you'll find exactly what you're looking for through the search button. I've made a little spreadsheet for each of the main FO suppliers & when I run across one of the "What's your favorite FO from XYZ company" or similar type posts I'll put the replies on the spreadsheet. That way if I'm ordering from that company or they are having a big sale then I can check my spreadsheet & see what FOs are recommended. I've not been disappointed yet! I've also made spreadsheets for scent types like clean, holiday, bakery, etc. so I can see what are the top sellers or favorites of my fellow candle makers. Hope this helps some. Magan

I color mine an ivory as well. Sometimes I add a tad of brown & yellow to give it a more creamy appearance. The picture above of the real thing is too yellow for a candle for my taste. I asked around before I colored it & everyone I talked too said they'd expect creme brulee to be an ivory'ish color, more vanilla looking.

I just placed an order for more wax (KY Parasoya this time) but right now I have 10+ lbs each of the following wax & I'm not sure how I should mix it or if I even should mix it for tarts: Ecosoya votive Astorlite V Paraffin (from Hobby Lobby) I don't like Ecosoya alone. I mixed it 50/50 with the Astorlite & it was ok but a little soft. Maybe try 75/25? The paraffin was bought on sale yesterday at Hobby Lobby & I got it 10 lbs for $2.00. I'm not sure it's the best wax but for that price I couldn't turn it down. Any ideas? What would you do? I'm not really confident in my wax-mixing abilities so I need help!!!

This post is a couple of months old but I thought I might bump it up in hopes that others have brochures they'd like to share. I'm working on mine now & would love to see some ideas of your handywork.

I was a little perplexed about the Presto too before I bought one. I wasn't sure I wanted the spigot but I thought it would be heavy, messy & dangerous to pour directly from the Presto into my pot. It might be dangerous but it's not heavy or messy at all. I use a glass Pyrex measuring cup for my pour pot. I have a large 5 cup & a small 1 cup. I only use this because I use to melt my soy in the microwave & I haven't bought an aluminum pot yet. I just pop the pyrex upside down on a cookie sheet in the oven on 200 degrees while my wax is melting. When my wax is finished I just unplug my Presto & pour the wax into the pyrex, add dye & FO. It's really very easy. I'm sure an aluminum pot would be easier but I haven't really felt the need to buy one yet. I like the measuring lines on the Pyrex because it's easy for me to get an accurate amount without having to mess with my scales. Plus the pyrex pot stays hot for a very long time. When I get all of the wax I need I just let it stay in my Presto until the next time. If I know I'm going to be using a different wax the next time then I just pour the still melted wax into a Glad container & label it.

What is the purpose of adding Crisco? When do you add it?

I make tarts & I've just started testing these pie tarts. I had been seeing the larger fruit pies with wicks & I thought I'd try making some tarts like that. I bought the embed molds a few weeks ago so I'm still testing but so far so good & they're fairly easy. Oddly enough I hadn't even seen these that Yankee made. We don't have a store near us & I've only been to their website a couple of times & that was a while back so I'm surprised to see these made by them. Very cool. Editing to add: I just surfed more & I see that Yankee also does votives like that. My husband suggested that to me the other night that I try some of the embeds on votives. He'll be disappointed to know he wasn't the 1st to think of it. He thought he was Einstein! haha

Here's the situation...A supplier was having a sale on FO's & the rules of the sale were pretty vague. It pretty much just said "$0.99/1 oz. bottles" & did not specify which FO's were included in the sale & which were not. I ordered 50 bottles & in my comments section I put "If any of these bottles are not included in the $0.99 sale please do not include them in my order. Thank you". I added that just in case the specialty FOs were not included since they didn't specify. I've done this with most all of my other suppliers & never had a problem. So I get my invoice today & they filled all of the order, marked some of the FO's down to the sale price but left other bottles at full price. My order ended up being almost twice the expected price since they did this. It has already shipped & my CC has been charged. Do I have a right to complain that they didn't abide by my instructions or was I out of line to expect them to cancel products I ordered? Is my comment even acceptable or are they allowed to fill an order regardless of your request? I want to call them to inquire about this but I thought I'd check here first so I don't come off sounding like an idiot if I was out of line asking them to do this. I worked for a wholesaler for a few years & if a customer asked us something like this then we did it & it was not a problem. Thanks in advance.

I just received this candy cane FO from At Wix End & there is something floating in it. If I had to guess I'd say it looks like actual ground cinnamon but I don't think there is any cinnamon in this FO & if there was wouldn't it be liquid form rather than the flakes? The flakes do not seem to dissolve. I'm planning on making tarts with this but I'm concerned that these will be in the wax. I've never seen this in any other FOs I have. Any ideas?

I'm curious if anyone uses their Impulse Sealer to seal off the tops (not shrink wrap) of their polypropylene bags rather than buy the ziplock polypro bags. I've noticed quite a price difference between the zip & non-zip poly bags & I'm wondering if it might be cheaper to seal them if you also factor in the cost of extra replacement elements for the sealer. I plan to package my tarts in these bags & I'll be selling different quantities of tarts so I'm thinking that if I could just seal the tops of the bags then I would only have to buy one size bag & just cut to fit rather than buy different sizes. I'm obviously just brainstorming so I'd love any feedback. Thanks!

I have a mold (see pictures) but it has a bit of a raise in the bottom & for some reason I really don't like it. "Raise" may not be the right word but I can't think of a better description right now. Just look at the picture! :undecided I want a mold that has a true flat bottom. I've been searching all of the suppliers & none of them have really good pictures of the molds so I can't tell if they are flat or not. The 2 molds I've narrowed it down to are from Bitter Creek & Candles & Supplies. Does anyone have tart molds from either of these places & can tell me if they're flat? Any other suppliers have these molds? TIA!!!

My first day visiting this board a couple of months ago I noticed a thread about "Monkey Farts". I had never heard of it & it definitely piqued my interest. But on the thread someone suggested "Primal Breeze" as an alternative to Monkey Farts. It cracked me up & I'll never forget it!

We're traveling to Columbus next week & I checked to see what candle supply stores were in that area & the only one I found close was Makes Scents. I'm just curious if anyone has ever shopped there & if it's worth a visit. I'd love to spend some time sniffing scents & also stock up on wax so I don't have to pay shipping. Do you have to have a wholesale licence/number to order from them in-store? TIA for your help. Magan

Very nice. I agree with the pp's though, I'd change the fonts up & add your contact info. I'd pick more of a "trademark" font for your business name so that it's more eye-catching & stands out.

Why don't you find out the seller & contact them to ask what type they are. If you don't want to hurt your mom's feelings then just go to her user name & see what auction she won. The type might be in the auction.
