  • About You
I am a crystal healer and soy candle maker. I am passionate about using crystals to charge the energy of my candles. I am oppossed to using paraffin wax for health, safety and political reasons. I sell most of my candles by custom order only and I started my candlemaking business to stay at home with my 2 daughters.

  1. Right they don't hide any flaws but I love the look (super pretty with any hue) and so do alot of customers. No ones reported any problems as far as weakness goes. A good rule of thumb is to go with food and beverage quality glassware. Frosted is also great for hurricanes (a votive in a votive holder placed in a frosted hurricane with pieces of colored glass is so easy but really striking)
  2. MochaChino smells like dirt to me and I have one customer who loves tobacco scent (found after a long search at CandleChem if anyone else has been looking.) that's not so nice. Yeah and patchouli's grody too, dang hippies I need a lot of my Nag Champa candle time after those.
  3. I use a shot jigger from wal mart, like $2 and it shows ounces, teaspoons and tablespoons. I do ALOT of custom fragrance mixes and this is the easiest way to mix right in to the glass no matter how small or large the amount (it goes up to 4 ounces).
  4. I agree that sweet scents and florals throw the best but I think that's just cause the FOs are usually stronger. My soy smells up my whole house (about 1500 sq ft) and if I put one on the warmer just until it's liquid (I use 4-6 oz sizes so it only takes a couple hours) it'll smell great for days. So nice to open the door to a good smell (Nag Champa is my weakness, I only make it for myself- none for customers cause I won't give it up). Everyone's sense of smell is purely individual and to me and some of my friends there is a chemical scent to paraffin candles hot or cold.
  5. Welcome to the Soy Revolution Deana! I know how you feel, I was so excited to get going I made alot of rookie errors too. First I'll address your wick issues. The diameter of your container determines what ply (size) wick you need. The wider the container the higher ply your wick needs to be so your candles have an even melt pool (the whole top needs to melt or else it'll tunnel-the ply was too low). I have only used wicks from my wax company CandleWealth because they are all natural, pre tabbed and easy sized (size 1 for up to 11/2 in 2 for 11/2 - 21/2 and so forth)plus I've never had any trouble. The only thing I can think of for the wicks drowning is that either you haven't let the candles harden completely (at least 8 hours) or the wicks are poor quality or too small. Second soy wax usually has a very strong scent throw but some fragrence oils (FO) are poor quality. You seem to have alot of sweet scents and those in my experience are the strongest. One other thing is you could be adding the FOs at too high a temp which can destroy fragrances, I reccommend not adding FOs until right before you pour and adding the max amount (follow your wax instructions on that temp and amount) What is the look, texture and smell of the FOs? Do they smell strong in the bottle, look dark and thick? If so then your problem could be your wax, some 100% soy blends do not have a powerful throw. I'd keep trying waxes until you find one you liked, there are blends with other vegtable oils added to improve throw that are still all natural (I love NVSoy from CandleWealth). Those bubbles were just air bubbles which can be dealt with by a top pour or my fave blow drying the top for a minute. Hope I helped. Have fun:)
  6. I love this site, so happy I found it-hopefully someone can help me get started with palm wax. I am having a heck of a time even finding the wax to buy. There are alot of places to buy already made candles but I would like to get just the wax and hear from anyone who has used it or blended it with soy. Namely I am wondering about how easy it is to work with, burn time, scent throw and melt pool quality. Thanks.
  7. It could just be "bloom" which is a normal discoloration due to exposure to the heat that can occur in natural waxes like beeswax and soy. Try some different soy wax blends, there are alot that are still all natural (they'll just have other natural veg oils)
  8. ... blatent advertising removed ... Type of Soy or Soy Blend you use? NVSoy Container and NVSoy Votive (both all natural soy with minute amount of other veg oil) Additives if any? No need Preferred dyes? CandleWealth color chips Preferred wick (Not sizes)? CandleWealth 100% Cotton wicks Pouring temp you recommend? Add fragrence at 120 or below pour before it gets lower then 110 What you do to prevent frosting? Not a problem What you do to prevent rough tops? Try to keep my kids from messing with them If needed a couple minutes with my blowdryer smoothes things out. Do you do anything to prevent wet spots? Usually not an issue but if I'm feeling anal warm the container first (before attatching wick or wax covered wick will get soft!) and then cover with a box while cooling.
