  2. Having the right wick for your candle making projects will be the key to making or breaking your desired finished product. While there are many products that work for one specific area in candle making, one product is extremely versatile in its compatibility and performance. This product comes in the form of our new CD Wicks, designed to be more compatible and more versatile than the common wick. These wicks are non-directional, coreless cotton flat braid wicks containing paper filament throughout. This in turn creates a “curl” within the wick while it burns overtime. Having a wick that curls is helpful due to the fact that it “self-trims” which helps with any soot that may form around the candle. Along with having the ability to self-trim, these wicks are also able to hold a higher fragrance load, making them more of a viable option for scented candles. WHAT TYPE OF CANDLES ARE CD WICKS COMPATIBLE WITH? The great thing about these wicks is their versatility and compatibility with multiple candle types. Due to their range of sizes, CD wicks can be used to make tealights, votives, pillars, and even container candles. The diameter of these wicks can range from 2.0”- 4” depending on the size you end up using. They can be distinguished by the number that comes after their name, such as CD 6 or CD 10. This series of Wicks goes from 6-12, except each different wick is classified by an even number. The full collection is CD 6, CD 8, CD 10, and CD 12. For tealights and votives, we would recommend using the CD 6 wick, as it has the lowest diameter range of 2” – 2.5”. For candle types that have a diameter range of 2.5” – 3/0”, we recommend using the CD 8 wick. And for candle types with a diameter between the range of 3.0” – 4.0”, we recommend using the CD 10 or CD 12 wick, depending on the actual diameter of the product. WHAT WAX WOULD THESE WICKS BE COMPATIBLE WITH? The wonderful thing about CD wicks is that they are not only versatile when it comes to their usage with different candle types, but it also applies to the wax you can use with this wick. Due to their increased rigidity, these wicks are incredibly versatile, making them compatible with both single-pour paraffin and soy wax which are known to be more vicious waxes. When using CD wicks with vegetable waxes such as soy, it is important to note that because this wax is more vicious, meaning thicker, you may have to use a bigger wick size than the one recommended for a certain diameter. For example, a container candle with a 3.0” diameter would usually work best when accompanied by a CD 10 wick. But because soy wax is more viscous, you may have to use a CD 12 wick in order to occupy more space within the container. While this would complicate things when trying to use soy wax, this problem would not occur with single-pour paraffin wax. Because paraffin wax has a lower melting point, it can move more freely while it cools, unlike soy wax which hardens rapidly once removed from heat. Please see chart below for more of a reference on the wicks compatibility.
  3. Container candles are some of the most popular types of candles in today's modern candle-making world. They are extremely fun to make and they are beautiful to look at depending on the type of glass you decide to house your candles in. Many beginners love to make container candles due to their simplicity. Using the correct wax in order to make a container candle is critical for the performance of your candle. THE BEST WAX FOR YOUR CANDLES? Having a wax that can provide an even burn, as well as hold both fragrance and color well is crucial to creating the perfect container candle. In order to receive the best performance from your container candle, it is best to use Soy Wax! Soy wax is great for container candles due to its extended burn time, little to no soot burn, and its great scent throw. Soy wax provides an even burn so you get the most out of your candles. For all eco-friendly candle makers, not to worry, soy wax has been proven to have the cleanest burns so not only would you be creating amazing candles with this wax, but you would also be helping the environment. Soy wax has no toxins, so it would be less likely to trigger allergies. Overall, soy wax is not only the most compatible wax to use for container candles but it is also the safer and more eco-friendly option. OTHER CANDLE WAX TYPES Although soy wax is the clear-cut favorite for all container candles, it is important to know the differences between each wax. The most popular waxes that are used for candle-making are Soy Wax, Beeswax, Paraffin wax, and Coconut wax. We’ve already discussed why soy wax is great for container candles, but that doesn’t mean it’s best for every type of candle. Paraffin wax is great for making taper candles and pillar candles. This wax holds color the best, and it is highly versatile in its usage. Paraffin wax is also very inexpensive which is why beginners usually start off with paraffin wax. Paraffin wax also does not burn as long as Soy wax making it less worth the while if you are looking for a long burn time. BEESWAX Beeswax, like paraffin, is great to use for taper and pillared candles. Beeswax has been for a long time making it the most reliable of the bunch. This wax has the longest burn time out of the rest, and it has little drip when compared to other waxes. Beeswax has a warm-toned flame which doesn’t give off any smoke from your candle, making it good for both your home and the environment. One downside for beginners is that this wax is much more expensive than paraffin and soy. The reason for this is due to the natural production of this wax and the popularity of it. While beeswax is more of a higher quality when comparing burn time and the performance of other waxes, we wouldn’t recommend it for beginners who are not looking to break the bank when starting their candle-making journey. COCONUT WAX Coconut wax is a newer wax that has very similar attributes to soy wax. In fact, more times than not, Coconut wax will usually be found in a blend with soy wax. This wax burns extremely well, giving an even burn to almost every candle. Many people think the coconut factor may affect the scent of their candle, but Coconut wax is actually scent free and works very well with fragrance oils. Coconut wax is another great alternative for container candles if you would like a more vegan and eco-friendly wax. Although it is a great wax to use for beginners, it is often found in blends more than it’s sold on its own. For a purer wax, Soy will always be the go-to wax for great performance, great scent throw, and amazing compatibility with glass jars.
  4. Many new candle makers often wonder how to get the best results when attempting to color their wax. While candle makers may be familiar with the process of adding different types of colorant to their wax in order to create a beautiful-looking candle, the majority of beginners struggle with when they should be adding their colorant to their wax blend. Adding colorant to your wax while it is too hot can cause the color to not consistently incorporate with the wax, while adding it to your wax when too cold can cause the colorant to not dissolve completely, leaving behind annoying dye particles. THE PROCESS OF ADDING COLORANT TO YOUR CANDLE Adding colorant to your wax blend is a very easy and simple process, the hardest part may be cleaning up! The first thing to note would be the amount that should be added to each pound of wax, which would depend on the type of colorant being used. If you are using liquid dye, one drop of dye should be enough to color a whole pound of wax. If you are using candle dye chips, one whole chip would be enough to color one pound of wax. As for dye blocks, shaving pieces off of the block would change the shade of the color you are looking to add. On average, a dye block would be able to color 5-50 lbs. of wax per block, so use very sparingly for a lighter shade. Please note that testing should always be done in order to ensure you receive your preferred color shade. Putting a couple of drops of wax on a white piece of paper will show the current color at which your wax will cool at. WHEN TO ADD YOUR COLORANT The most important thing to remember before adding your candle colorant is the state your wax must be at in order to begin adding. Your wax must be fully melted in order to fully incorporate any colorant. Depending on the wax you are using, most times the wax would have fully melted at around 175°- 185° F. You want to add your colorant during this state in order to receive the best results. Adding candle colorant while the wax is still in a solid state or when the wax is too hot will result in the colorant underperforming. Dye chips/blocks for candles melt smoothly around 160°-180° F, so it is recommended to once again test different temperatures around that range in order to find which gives you the best result. Liquid dyes can be added any time after the wax has fully melted into its liquid state, although be aware of going too low a temperature or too high. HOW DOES FRAGRANCE OIL AFFECT THE PROCESS OF WHEN COLORANT SHOULD BE ADDED? One final factor that can affect the timing of when the candle colorant should be added to your wax is the addition of candle fragrance oil. Fragrance oil can affect the chemical makeup of any colorant, so it is important to know the steps to take in order to incorporate both into your wax blend. The first thing to note is that your fragrance oil should always be added first. Adding your fragrance oil after the colorant can cause major color changes and will result in the wax undergoing discoloration. In order to have a wax blend that works with both fragrance oil and colorant, you must use products that will be compatible with one another. For example, a fragrance oil with a flash point between 130°-180° can be compatible with any candle colorant due to the lesser hazard this fragrance oil will cause due to its flash point. For fragrance oils that have flash points at 130° F or lower, it would be best to use liquid dye due to the fact that liquid dye will leave less dye particles once your wax has cooled and reverted back to a solid state. It is important to always do extensive research on the products you are using in order to receive the best, and safest results for your candles.
  5. Candles are an essential attribute of various holidays. Making candles with your own hands is not so difficult. This exciting activity provides a huge scope for creativity. Candles are usually made from beeswax, soy wax, paraffin, and some blend wax. Beeswax is a natural material - a waste product of bees, and has a very pleasant honey aroma and bactericidal properties. Beeswax contains more than 300 different compounds: minerals, vitamins, propolis, resins, pollen, etc. The color of the wax can vary from light yellow to yellow-brown. It is very interesting to work with this type of wax and it is pleasant to the touch. It will have a putty-like consistency at above 80-90 degrees F and will melt around 145-147 degrees F. A beeswax burns much longer than a paraffin candle and does not smoke or melt. A plate of beeswax with an imprinted bottom of the honeycombs is called a honeycomb. The foundation is inserted into the hives so that the bees build honeycombs on it and spend less wax on it. This is the "foundation" for future honeycombs. Soy wax is a 100% natural wax derived from vegetable soybeans. Soy wax is made from environmentally friendly, renewable resources. This wax has many advantages: an extended burn time, no unsightly black soot, and it’s a naturally-derived product. Soy wax is perfect for container candles, tealight candles, wax melts, and tarts. Some of the benefits of this wax are clean burning and long-lasting. Since soy wax has no toxins, it is less likely to trigger allergies. Soy wax burns cooler which means that you can enjoy your soy wax candle for generally 30-50% longer. Paraffin is the cheapest material for this type of project. It paints easily and melts quickly. It is easy to work with, and the candles are very beautiful. FYI, a 2014 study in the Journal of Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology found scented paraffin candles pose no known health risks, and that emission levels fall well below World Health Organization exposure limits. Paraffin absorbs odor well. If an essential oil is applied to a finished odorless paraffin and placed in a sealed bag, after 10-15 days it will be saturated with aroma and, when burned, will release the aroma into the air. Depending on what type of blended wax you want to use, make sure to pay attention to the specific instructions. The melting point for each blend of wax will vary, as well as the time when you can add your candle fragrance oil. WICK TYPES & MATERIALS? The wick is needed so that the molten candle mass enters the combustion zone. The wick should be made only from natural materials: cotton, hemp, and wood. The most popular material is cotton. The thickness of the wick should be proportional to the thickness of the candle. If the wick is too thin, it will burn out very quickly, and the candle will immediately die out. And too thick will give a big flame, will smoke and the candle will quickly burn out. If you are planning to use soy wax in your project, you need to use a cord of loose weaving, and for a paraffin one - a denser one. You can buy a ready-made wick, or you can make it yourself by twisting cotton threads. For thin candles (1-3 cm), you can take 6-10 threads, for candles 3-7 cm thick you need 10-20 threads. Before use, the wick must be soaked into molten paraffin or wax. As confirmation, it can be noted that people who decide to engage in the production of candles are gradually drawn in and for them, this is not only an income but also an interesting and exciting activity. The more often you practice, the better the finished products you get. 7 EASY WAYS TO MAKE YOUR OWN CANDLE And so that you understand the details of the process itself, we have prepared 7 easy ways how to enjoy the process. The result will amaze everyone at home! 1. It would seem that ice is not an assistant at all in such a delicate matter, but in this case, we simply need it! You need to take an empty plastic bottle, by using it as a mold for a future candle, put a finished candle inside, in advance cutting it to the size of the mold. Then overlay the mold with ice or use melted wax and a ready-made wick. After that, you need to melt the wax and quickly pour it into the center of the mold with ice in a small stream so that the ice is completely covered. Wait ten minutes, drain the water from the candle, and gently pull the finished product out of the mold. In the future, you can add colored crayons or dye to the wax. 2. What fascinates me the most is the idea of creating rainbow candles. Children and adults will be delighted with such multi-colored candles, besides, it is not difficult to make them. Pour some soy wax into the double boiler and allow it to melt. Add small amounts of candle dye to the wax. Prepare your jar and make sure your wick is attached well to the bottom of the jar. Pour the wax into the jar. Continue mixing and pouring layers of wax into the jars in your desired colors/scent combinations. Ensure each layer has fully set before pouring in the next one. 3. Beeswax sheets are ideal for creating a candlestick that will easily decorate both a children's party and a romantic evening. Beeswax sheets may come in different colors 4. In order to create a decorative rose candle, you will need candles of different colors or paraffin, tools for melting paraffin, a wick, wax paper, a tablespoon, a lighter, a hairdryer, and 15 minutes of free time. Please note that everything must be done quickly enough, because until the wax has cooled down, it is soft and, therefore, it can be sculpted like plasticine. Agree, the result is clearly worth the effort! 5. This fun candy candle is easy to make. You will need a mold, a wick, wax, and colorful decorations. 6. To create a fruit candle, you need a lemon, orange, grapefruit, or any other citrus with a dense peel, several white or yellow candles, floss thread, a small pan or bowl, and a pencil. Cut the fruit in half and carefully remove the pulp from it, being careful not to damage the peel. The peel halves will serve as candle holders. Twist a few strands of floss with a tourniquet and soak them in paraffin or remove the wick from the candle. Then tie one end of the wick to the pencil and lay it on top of the peeled half. Make a hole in the bottom of the peel, pull the lower end of the wick through it, and tie a knot on the outside. Grind the candles with a knife, remove the wicks from them, and melt the pieces of paraffin. Pour the melted paraffin into halves of the peel and leave until the wax hardens. Enjoy your masterpiece! 7. To create a coffee candle, you will need 5 white paraffin candles or a few candle stubs, 5 tbsp. coffee beans, beer can, juice box, pencil, knife, sunflower oil, floss, and a small pan. First, grind the candles with a knife, remove the wicks from them, and then melt the pieces of paraffin in the double boiler. When the paraffin melts, add the coffee beans, and pour the wax with the beans into the mold, filling it almost halfway. When this layer of paraffin hardens, melt the rest of the paraffin and fill the form to the top. When the candle hardens, take it out of the mold. Take away You can create quite extraordinary candles. It all depends on your imagination. You can create designs and shapes that will surprise the inhabitants of your home. You can also use melted wax by pouring it into various shapes.
  6. Bloggers and interior stylists unanimously assure that nothing decorates and “relaxes” the interior like a few candles, correctly selected for a particular space. The flickering of fire gives real bliss and smoothly immerses you in relaxation as if slowing down time. One of the main rules to consider for home interior candles is the size and the shape of the candles: candles should correspond to the area you want to compliment. What is the best way to use home interior candles? Candles not only create a unique atmosphere but also become a decoration of the space. The right choice guarantees an effective design. HOME INTERIOR CANDLES BY THE BED Soy candles in glass containers are ideal for a nightstand next to the bed. Soy wax is considered environmentally friendly and will not harm those who like to light a candle before going to bed. Just make sure to have a candle jar lid next to your candle so you can extinguish it before falling asleep. In addition, candles in vessels look amazing as an addition to the book cup bouquet of flowers. For those who like wide pillar wax candles, it is recommended to put them on a chest of drawers by the bed, complementing them with a stack of books or a vase of flowers. HOME INTERIOR CANDLES ON THE COFFEE TABLE White or cream candles of any length and size are suitable for this area. The light color of the wax will not stand out too much on the table and, due to its neutrality, will complement, rather than push the rest of the décor. Remember that taper candles always look aesthetically pleasing in minimalistic golden candelabra of different heights. Neat tablet candles in openwork crystal candlesticks complement light interiors, making them seem translucent and weightless. Complement such a composition with a bouquet in a small vase and place it on a tray. Lovers of rustic interiors will love pillar candles in vintage-style wooden candelabra. Complement this décor with bouquets of greenery tied with twine. HOME INTERIOR CANDLES IN THE FORM OF A CHANDELIER For those who love French-style interiors, candelabra in the form of chandeliers will be to your taste. Simple wax candles hanging from the ceiling will make the space more aristocratic, bringing the aesthetics of luxurious country chateaus. Place these chandeliers above the dining table or in the entrance area, complementing with floral arrangements or ivy and fern wreaths. 4. CANDLE DECORATIONS ON THE STAIRS OR ON THE FLOOR The interior of a house with a staircase looks spectacular with candles - large cylindrical candles can be placed on the stairs if desired, supplemented with greenery or flowers. 5. HOME INTERIOR CANDLES ON THE FIREPLACE Happy owners of a fireplace should get a supply of long and wide pillar candles: nothing complements the flame of fire like candles’ additional flicker in the room. Such a décor requires stable candlesticks with a little lighter in color than the fireplace itself. Thanks to this, the candles will look like a separate composition, eye-catching and giving real relaxation. HOME INTERIOR CANDLES ON THE DINING TABLE It is worth checking out some wedding stylists’ works for dining table decoration ideas: a slightly rumpled linen tablecloth, eucalyptus floral compositions, and candles in transparent or golden candlesticks will be a perfect combination! The main rule: choose pastel shades of dishes, textiles, and décor, relying on natural soothing colors (beige, mint, dusty pink, light blue). The dinner will look restrained and aristocratic, and the guests will be astonished and relaxed at the same time. Taper candles on long candlesticks are also suitable for dining decoration. Remember to consider the style of the interior so that the candlesticks and their contents fit in with the overall concept. Instead of candlesticks, you can take vases, glasses, or other kitchen utensils that are suitable in shape and design. Dilute the composition with cones or artificial fruits, depending on the season and the mood. CANDLES ON A CONSOLE TABLE The console table is the first element of the interior that the eye falls on when entering the house. Ideally, there should be a minimum number of items on it, and candles and decor should be selected to match the color of the walls or be in contrast with them. Metal candelabra with taper candles are ideal for a wide and long console. And for those who want to complement the composition of a bouquet and a lamp, transparent containers with simple white candles are suitable. CANDLES AND HOUSE PLANTS Fans of boho style who decorate their homes with plants choose long vintage candlesticks or neat soy candles in glass for their interiors. Juicy green leaves of fern, ivy, and aloe, combined with a flickering fire, will bring natural peace and tranquility to the room. CANDLES IN THE BATHROOM If you want to create a relaxing spa-like atmosphere in the bathroom, then you should definitely use plants and home interior candles. Dried flowers in vases and candles in glasses are suitable for rooms without windows. Ferns and minimalistic long candlesticks along the windowsill will be an excellent choice for the owners of a bath with natural light. In the bathroom, you can safely arrange scented candles - they will not only decorate the interior but also fill the room with a pleasant aroma. It is easier than planting living plants in the bathroom, and the result is no less spectacular. PATIO DECORATION WITH CANDLES Every spring, the Scandinavians turn their patios into real recreation areas for the whole family. In addition to pillows, blankets, small tables, and even a mini-barbecue, northerners always install lamps on the balcony for long night gatherings with a glass of wine. Closer to midnight, about a dozen candles are lit: in large glass vessels or small vases. 11. DIY UNUSUAL CANDLES Decorative candles can be made independently - any size, shape, and color. All you need is an inexpensive candle, melted in a double-boiler pot, and molds. You can use anything as a candle mold: shells, orange halves without pulp, jars, and ordinary cups. Melted wax crayons are suitable for coloring. Home interior candles are great additions to any apartment interior, as well as an occasion to create a special mood. A huge variety of options for their placement will not leave anyone indifferent, as it will allow you to decorate your home to your taste. When decorating the interior, do not forget about safety! You should not use home interior candles in the children's room. It is better to find other ways how to equip a teenager's room with different styles.
  7. A candle fair is a public and recurring assembly of candle makers or their representatives selling wax-related products. Candle fairs facilitate personal connections and bonds of mutual benefits between candle makers, shoppers, and communities. By cutting out middlemen, candle makers receive more of our candle dollars and shoppers receive handmade and the most unique products thus helping local economies prosper. Each candle fair defines the term “local”, however, it is not necessary to see only local candle makers in a candle fair. The organizations of candle fairs also implement guidelines and operating rules that ensure the candle fair consists principally of candle makers selling directly to the public products that they have produced. 8. Unity wedding candles have always symbolized the hearth. They, like no other attribute, add a special mystery and little touches to the special day. If you delve into history, for the first time a candle was mentioned in ancient Egyptian chronicles. Today, no wedding is complete without this attribute. Candles are produced in traditional and unusual forms, smooth and carved, decorated with beads, ribbons, rhinestones, feathers, fabrics, etc. The candle holders designed for candles are just as important. After all, it is not only a container for dripping wax but also an auxiliary platform for decoration. The decoration of the banquet hall and the decoration of the wedding table with candles starts with the place intended for the bride and groom. It is here that the general concept and design solution is developed, corresponding to the general color scheme and attributes of the celebration. HOW TO ARRANGE WEDDING CANDLES CORRECTLY To get the most spectacular result, decorators use the following rules: First of all, candles must correspond to the chosen theme of the celebration. To do this, you need to select sets of champagne bottles of the same color and style, candlesticks, candles themselves, balloons, textiles, etc. Particular attention is paid to matching the size of the wedding table attributes. Excessively thin taper candles should be supplemented with large models. Select the design for candles, especially the handmade ones with great care. WEDDING CANDLE DECORATIONS Different techniques are used to decorate unity wedding candles and candles in general: Decoupage. This is the simplest technique known since ancient times. Why overpay for design work, if you can make such candles yourself? To do this, use candles of the right size, and three-layer napkins with the right pattern. Heat the desired section of the element to be decorated with the flame of another candle, and glue a cut or torn pattern. If desired, the remaining space can be decorated with paint, ribbons, beads, and any accessories. Carved candles. These are amazing works of candle art. If the newlyweds have chosen this option as a wedding table decoration, then it is best to buy them. Because it is unlikely that you will be able to make such design delights on your own without certain skills and abilities. Floating decorations. These are rather amazing and original compositions than standard products. Wedding decorations in a similar style have come into fashion relatively recently, but have already won a lot of fans. 9. The author of the book "The little book of Hygge. Danish secrets to happy living” Meik Wiking calls candles “instant hygge”. That is the easiest way to achieve coziness and comfort. Unlike lamps and fixtures, lighting candles give natural vivid light, which favorably affects the emotional background of a person. This is especially important in the fall-winter period when many suffer from depression. Mood swings and winter go hand in hand, but the Danes have learned that the right lighting at home makes the atmosphere cozy and winter more enjoyable. According to Meik Wiking, candles help you enjoy the cold winter evenings, and not endure them in anticipation of spring. When you light a vivid light, it becomes cozy and comfortable. And you won’t feel down or sad in such an environment. 10 REASONS TO LIGHT CANDLES EVERY NIGHT LIGHTING CANDLES IN THE HOUSE TO GET RID OF STRESS AND DEPRESSION Candles have soothing and healing properties and therefore are often used by massage therapists and psychologists. 10. The word “candle” comes from the Latin “candere,” which means “to shine.” Candles have been around for a long time. They were used in Egypt around 3,000 BCE and were a major light source for many centuries. Candles were made from tallow (rendered animal fat) for a long time. However, with the advent of paraffin wax in the 1800s, tallow candles went by the wayside. Another big breakthrough in the 19th century was the production of stearic acid, which made paraffin wax harder and more manageable. Wax, candle additives, as well as the wick, play a huge role in how a candle burns. Some candles are made from wax that drips down the side while melting. As the liquid wax hardens, it forms “waxicles”. These types of candles are designed to burn fast and completely burn down with a waterfall of wax drips. Now imagine that the waterfall created by the dripping wax has different colors! What a unique piece of art that would be…! How about a white taper candle that mysteriously dripping wax of five different colors. It’s like the groovy 60’s are back. HOW TO CREATE A WINE BOTTLE SCULPTURE WITH DRIPPING CANDLES? Start with a clean, empty bottle. Tall narrow bottles like wine bottles work best, but any will do as long as the mouth of the bottle is about 3/4 inch in diameter. This is the size of the drip candles, and it will be easier to get the candle to stand in the mouth of the bottle if they are near the same size. Place the bottle on a solid surface and protect an area about one foot around the bottle on all sides. The wax will drip down the bottle and some of it will make its way down to the surface, so protect any table tops, furniture, or shelves you put your wine bottle sculpture on. Also be careful to keep it away from curtains, papers, and anything flammable. Find a perfect multi-color dripping candle, and simply place it into the wine bottle (or other candle holders) and watch as it covers the holder in colorful drips. This kind of fascinating centerpiece can decorate any party (especially on Halloween). When the candle is almost gone and the flame is in a small puddle at the mouth of the bottle, choose another candle. Light it from the flame, and set the base of the new candle directly onto the flame of the old candle, extinguishing it. Hold the new candle steady for about 30 seconds until it seems secure. The melted wax from the previous flame will harden and hold your new candle in place. Continue adding candles to create a unique, ever-changing work of art. Enjoy your piece of art! Candles are the easiest way to decorate the interiors of your home and yet give it an elegant look. Candles can light up the aura of your house in an instant and make your living space feel more peaceful. A BIT OF CANDLE HISTORY The prototype of candles was a hole hollowed out in a stone and filled with fat. Such lamps were known 20 thousand years ago. The first mention of candles dates back to the 1st millennium BC. Ancient candles were vessels with fat or oil into which a piece of cloth or a sliver was inserted as a wick. In the 15th century, beeswax was more commonly used to make candles. Wax candles burned brighter, longer, did not smoke as much but were very expensive. Therefore, only very wealthy people and the church could afford them. In the 18th century, with the development of whaling, spermaceti (a white waxy substance produced by the sperm whale), a substance extracted from the upper part of the head of cetaceans, were used to make candles. Spermaceti burned so brightly that candles made from it were the standard for measuring light intensity in applied optics. In the 19th century, Carl von Reichenbach discovered paraffin. This wax is still the most popular material for making candles. With the introduction of widespread electrical power, the significance of candles acquired a purely decorative or ritual character. TYPES OF CANDLES Household Candles – Every house has household candles made of unpainted purified paraffin. These candles are designed for everyday use and are great for emergency use. 15. Have you ever crafted a candle and once you light it it’s not burning properly, meaning you are experiencing a low flame and almost zero melt pool. If this is an issue you’re experiencing, continue reading to learn more! Candle making can become very technical and is an ongoing process of trial and error, but it's important to know that if you are experiencing issues such as low flame and little to no melt pool it can be attributed to multiple things, here we will go over the different factors that can contribute to this problem. To begin, in order for a candle to burn properly it needs fuel/oxygen. When it comes to candle making if your candle lacks fuel/ oxygen this will affect your candle's flame. Your candle gets its fuel/oxygen from the wax. Reasons your candle may not be receiving any fuel/oxygen could be because of fragrance oil overload, too much dye added to wax, or the wrong wick size. Moreover, if ingredients are overloaded this can lead to your wick becoming clogged and not being able to perform at its best. It could also be as simple as your wick being the wrong size for the vessel you are currently using. So let's get to the details, what does it mean to overload your candle with additional ingredients? CANDLE-MAKING TIPS № 1. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO OVERLOAD FRAGRANCE OILS? First, it’s important to know that when crafting scented candles it's important to use fragrance oils that are meant or can be used for candle making. Fragrance oils are great when you want to create a scented candle(s), but if you add too much fragrance oils it can alter the size of your flame meaning it becomes clogged by an overload of oils. When you light a candle it may look like the melt pool is what is creating the scent, you’d be surprised to know that the melt pool is not entirely where the scent is derived from. When a candle is burning, for it to burn properly the wax and fragrance oil must travel up through the wick igniting the scent but if there is an overload this burn flow will be altered. Fragrance oil overload can also contribute to a mushrooming wick which can also affect your candle flame. Most waxes have a recommended fragrance oil load of 3% - 12% max. It is important to follow recommended instructions. CANDLE-MAKING TIPS № 2. WHY DOES IT MATTER HOW MUCH DYE I ADD? Candle making dye, much like fragrance oils can also overload your wax which can lead to clogging your wick if too much dye is being added to your melted wax. We recommend adding your dye into your wax moderately and testing the color by scooping some of the wax on a spoon and placing it on a paper towel and letting the color set to ensure you have the right color. CANDLE-MAKING TIPS № 3. WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF HAVING THE WRONG WICK? Having the wrong sized wick can affect your candle greatly in the way that if you have a wick that is too small it can lead to clogging as it may drown in wax as well as not be able to create the proper sized burn pool. If your wick is too large it can cause the wick to get smaller as it will create a large melt pool that the wick may curl into. Additionally, if you have too many wicks it can cause the wicks to droop as it will also create a large melt pool, as well as cause a low flame as each wick will be taking up fuel/oxygen.
