  1. Hey all, I am trying to find a really good apple pie scent that is strong in soy. I have tested Mill Creeks Dutch Apple Pie & Just Scents Baked Apple Pie. So far I have gotten very little cold throw on both & barely any hot throw. Any reccomendations? Thanks, Anne
  2. Hey, I am new to this as well, but I think it sounds like frosting. I have used the Cargil wax & had some frosting issues with it. From everything I have read on this board frosting is just a one of those things that you get with soy wax. I am adding some beeswax & playing with different pour temps & curing temps to try to cut back on the frosting. So far for me, the darker color candle frost the worst! Anne
  3. Hey guys, I am really new to this & can't believe I finally poured a really great looking candle! My husband & I have probably poured twenty some candles & have had alot of frosting & wet spots & cracking...very frustrating! Well, last weekend we poured one that looked pretty good after curing overnight but I didn't get my hopes up. Now a week later, it is still looking great. I am so happy--at least I know that it is possible! I have the urge to go buy one of those glass display cases to keep it in! I don't have the heart to burn it yet so who know about scent throw, but at this point, who cares! Thanks, Anne
  4. Thanks for the info! I melted the wax in the stove on 170-worked like a charm! Probably not the best idea for me to dig the wax out with a knife-I am not very coordinated & I like having 10 fingers. Thanks again, Anne
  5. Hey guys!! I am new & still testing different waxs to see which one I like the best. I have it narrowed down(I think!) to Superior Soy or Ecosoya Advanced. I was wondering if anybody who has worked with either of these waxes could give me a pro/con list? What I have found is the SS wax has wonderful scent throw hot & cold but there are problems with frosting & wet spots--I have poured at different temps. The Ecosoya Advanced is pouring a beautiful candle! But the scent throw is not nearly as strong as I would like. I have tried pouring both with identical FO & dye & still cannot get the Ecosoya to throw as strong as the SS. I am using the container blends.Have others run into the same problems? Thanks, Anne
  6. Hey all, Newbie here! Yesterday I poured the ugliest candle ever & was wondering what is the safest way to get the wax out of the jar without breaking it. I would love to remelt & repour instead of just chunking it. I am using a 15 oz bulb jar. Also is it safe to remelt the wax since the scent & dyes have already been added? Thanks, Anne
  7. Thanks for the info.... Well, I feel like a complete idiot!:embarasse I had used a different search engine & haven't been able to find anything, now I have her name so that will help alot! Thanks again!!!
  8. Hi all, I am wondering if anybody out there has heard of Blue Ridge Mercantile candles out of Salem, VA? I found one a couple of years ago & it is hands down the best candle I have ever owned. I went back to the shop that carried them to buy more & found out that the woman who makes them was no longer in business. I have called every shop I can think of locally that carries candles & nobody has heard of them. I have also done several internet searches & apparently she didn't have a website. I believe they are soy & such a wonderful burning & scent throw. I would love to have some more of them or if nothing else locate the woman who made them & pick her brain for her candle making secrets! Thanks, Anne
  9. Hi all, I spent this past weekend pouring soy container candles-my first time! I poured 10 different scents experimenting with 3 different soy waxes & two different wick types. They started out looking really great. Then while curing, I got air bubbles (taken care of with a heat gun), wet spots-some really big ones, and frosting on some. Why oh why can't they stay looking as pretty as when they are first poured?!? The main problem I have though is cracking, some of the wax has cracked all the way through. The cracks have anly appeared in the JS Soy & Superior Soy so far. I have also tried Cargil nature wax-no cracks there-just frosting & wet spots. The ones that are cracking also seem to not be adhering to the container. The is wax literally loose in the jar. I am heating to around 190, adding FO & dye around 175 then stirring & letting cool till slushy-around 110 then pouring into warmed jars. Does anybody else have this cracking problem? I was also wondering how long to cure before burning, I have heard everything from 24 hrs to a week. Also, do you normally cure with lids on or off? Thanks, Anne
  10. Thanks for the info! Geekrunner--Thanks to my hubby I already have my presto pot, digital scale, heat gun & thermometer. I actually got all that before I ordered any wax or scents! He is as excited about this as I am. htaylorrn--I have already ordered too much variety, those scent samples all sounded so good! I think I have ordered 28lbs of wax (3 different brands) and probably 30 scent samples from different suppliers. I am not going to try to tackle all this in one weekend though! Deciding which ones to play with first will be hard. daniedb--I know it sounds like soy is the most frustrating of waxes to work with-but I love it! Of all the candles I have ever owned, soys are my all time favorite.
  11. Hey Guys! I am new to the site as well as candlemaking. I have been researching on this site for a while & decided to go ahead and give soy container candlemaking a try. I have ordered some wax & scent samples & my containers & dyes should be here tomorrow. I am so excited to start testing this weekend! Any words of wisdom or helpful first-timer tips you could give me would be greatly appreciated. I have a feeling I will need some pep talks before the weekend is over! Thanks, Anne
