  1. I'll try not to write a book here. The reason for my question is that a friend of a friend started making and selling candles and says they are 100% soy. I'm thinking they have some paraffin in them. When I made my first "100% soy" candles, I didn't label them as such because KY said there was a tiny bit of cottonseed oil in their formula. But this wax was all I used, the candles had a flaky appearance (which I have always loved) and when I put them in a craft co-op I belonged to, the people who worked in the shop told me that people thought something was wrong with them. This was before soy was popular and so I decided to go with a soy-paraffin blend. And they sold well. Seeing these supposed 100% soy candles from my friend's friend, made me doubt her truthfulness, but I thought maybe things had changed since I first made them. I know in some circles you can claim your candle is soy if there is a certain percentage of soy in it. But to label them as 100% soy is misleading at best. I'm just making candles for family and friends now. Thank you for your post, Trappeur!
  2. Thanks everyone! Chapman, I've always liked the appearance of a soy candle but too many potential customers thought there was something wrong with them. To each his own.
  3. I haven't made candles in years but have a couple orders for citrus peel and pine from wyw. Bitter creek sells wyw oils but not that one. I have sent 2 emails to them, one directly to Rich, with no response. Bulk apothecary has citrus peel and pine fo, but when I asked if this oil was wyw, I was told they don't divulge suppliers. Any info would be much appreciated! TIA!
  4. I haven't made candles in years but when I did, it was said that a 100% soy wax candle would have that flaky appearance after it was burned. Is this true today? Are there 100% soy waxes that stay relatively smooth? Thanks in advance!
  5. Been racking my brain trying to think of that dog's name ... just had to read a little longer. Thanks Candybee.. I'm off to youtube to get a few laughs!!
  6. Strawberry Jam, Apricot and Cream, Spiced Cranberry, Stonehenge, Plumeria are all fantastic, IMHO
  7. Wish pics were bigger, but they look very well made! Great attention to detail!
  8. My most recent bottle of Sweet Corn Pudding was different from what I've received in the past. I don't dare order it again.
  9. When I order 1 oz. bottles I make melts to see which fragrances are most liked. I then buy a larger bottle if I intend to make candles. If you insist on giving untested candles to loved ones, I'd under wick them and make sure to tell them not to put the candle in an area where anything within a few feet could catch fire. Of course, the glass could break even in an open area and spread fiery hot wax everywhere. And under-wicking them teaches you nothing, if you're lucky enough to not over-wick them. I had my first candle making supply order on its way from Bittercreek and wanted to burn every last speck of wax from a large pottery container candle I had bought, so I could fill it with my new wax. Obviously I didn't know what I was doing. I left the candle in a pan in an open area on my kitchen counter and went downstairs. I know, I know. Luckily my adult daughter happened by and found the container shooting flames several feet high. I was lucky. Please don't endanger your family and friends with untested candles. I know my experience doesn't necessarily apply to your situation, but I shudder whenever I think about how close I came to burning my house down when I was an inexperienced candle burner and maker. If you over-wick and they burn the candle too long in a bad spot, you could literally cause a house fire.
  10. I see this all the time with melts in the 2 oz. cups. The net weight is 1.5-1.7 and see them described as 2 oz. Irkes me to death!!
  11. I've looked into it, but haven't set mine up yet. I came to the same conclusion as JI. After doing a little reading and looking at my state's website, I won't use legal zoom, either.
  12. I like Steel Valley Scents, too. I hear ya on the B&B... I worry that something might go wrong and someone will have a reaction on their skin. sheesh It's hard enough worrying that they'll burn their house down. I also don't need "yet another" messy project.
  13. Oh no, not derogatory at all, imho. Just the word "rusty" left me picturing something less than ideal... it's just the way it hit me at first. But where you're trying to appeal to your local customers, they probably won't even think of it the way I did. But I'm still remembering the name, which is half the battle, so I'd work on some ideas for graphics before letting it go. Good luck to you!
  14. My first reaction to the name wasn't really positive. On the other hand, I've had no trouble remembering it. I think with the right graphics and logo you could have a winner.
  15. I have a large yankme candle jar that's coated with black soot... I love to show it off!
  16. Totally agree with Faerywren ... I'd say more but I don't want to get my head wacked off.:tiptoe:
  17. I would have bet it was ICS because she treated me the same way. I'm really surprised it was NG, too.
  18. I second Peak and Bittercreek. I've heard great things about JS and have been building a list of scents to try, but now that I know she considers 1 year a long time to carry a scent, I'd be in the same boat as you, Natty. Thanks for the post.
  19. I had the same problem with Gourmet Sugar Cookie from ICS. She totally denied there was a problem even though some people described the scent as smelling like "dirty toes". My sample bottle of it was to DIE for...best GSC I've ever found. The 16 oz. bottle I ordered was NOT the same. Also the sugar corn pudding from AH/RE is a little different from the bottle I got from KY, but I didn't say anything to them. I was too happy with the care that went into the order I got from them to complain. lol
  20. I keep my house really cold, 60-62 degrees...I wonder if room temp. could account for the different experience people have with getting the 6006 out of clamshells.
