  1. I think I may know the candle you are referring to; I got one as a gift. Very nice smelling vanilla one, that says you can dip your fingers in and use it on dry hands, massage, etc. Pretty pricey hand cream. Did yours have a pic of a doggy on it? Not bashing it, I love it. It's just SOOOO expensive. I think mine cost $29. I know, because I looked it up online.
  2. You might also check over on the classifieds and maybe buy a bit from someone selling some there. You wouldn't have to pay as much, and shipping charges wouldn't cost an arm and a leg. Everything I've ever made, I bought my supplies from over there.
  3. Good questions. I am an ignorant newbie myself, but have a thought or 2 on this. I don't make any candles to sell, only for myself, and to give away. I happen to like soy because I like the creamy texture, the fact that mine have never smoked, and it is very easy to clean up. IF, I were making them to sell, I wouldn't even add any dyes, just leave them the nice, natural creamy color. Cream color goes with any decor!!
  4. I'm pretty new around here, so I missed that thread. All things considered, I'm not going to worry about using it and it exploding. Since I don't sell to anyone, the safety concern for others doesn't apply. I will always place mine in an area where I can keep an eye on it at all times, and place it in a tray or something in case the jar or container should crack. I honestly think manufactures have to cover themselves on every issue known to man, to keep them from being sued by every Tom, Dick and Harry because of ignorance. Maybe they think people are going to cook up meth or something with these things. They didn't seem to be so concerned about it to mention it on the outside of the box! Using a little common sense has to account for something.
  5. I bought a heating plate to use with some container candles that I have (soy). It came from Walmart, it is a Scentsible Aroma. Now, when you open the box and read the paper insert, it says "Using vegetable based waxes on the warmer are likely to cause candles to explode" WTH?!?! :undecided It does not say anything at all on the box about it. Plus there are about a 100 more other kinds of warnings on there, too. :tiptoe: It mentions the veg. based candle a couple more times. I already had the jar on there warming at the time, so I just sat it in a box and kept an eye on it. I had it on there for about 5 hours, and it seemed fine. Why in the world would a vegetable based wax cause a container explode? Seems to me parrafin would more likely cause something like that if anything. Is it because veg. has a lower melt point or something? Are there other, better warmers out there that would not have this issue?
  6. I also think the lack of wicks sound appealing. Are there any past threads here (that you know of) that can elaborate on the instructions for making these? Or is it basically working out the wax types and FO combinations for the strongest scents? What kind of wax do you use for yours? I like the soy so far, and would like to use at least a combo with some in it.
  7. I wonder if there is anything you can add to make the pillar wax suitable for containers? Is it even doable?
  8. This info won't be useful for anyone, really but just wanted to say thanks for the things I've learned here.:smiley2: I am not/will not, be selling anything, this was for myself. My first candle........I made yesterday, and my house still smells great. Candle is beautiful (well, to me!) the smell cold and when burning is to die for. I bought 100% soy wax flakes, hemp wicks, and some FO's from the classified's here. I made a 16oz. jar, 3", with 1 oz. Peaks Caramel Apple, no dyes. Turned out great. I melted to 175, put oil in, and poured at 110. Hemp wick is 40032 x-lg. The burn pool looks good, the wick is mushroomed a little, but I understand that happens with hemp often. I couldn't wait any longer than 22 hours before I lit it, too impatient. As they say here in the South, "even a blind hog can find an acorn sometimes" I have burned it for a total of 8 hours so far. I cannot get over how strong and pleasant it smells. I used to buy the Yankee's around here, because that was the best smelling ones I could find. I won't be paying $20 for theirs anymore. DH says the smell makes him hungry for dessert. I'm not going for perfection, just want to have awsome fragrances in my home, hoping I have found the way to do it. Thanks to all again
  9. Thanks guys. The glass containers are all anywhere from 4 oz. up to 16, and are nice and heavy. They are not the cheapo ones. I think I try to use them and see how it works out. I don't really mind if they look odd or not, and probably won't color them. I just want a nice, strong scent. So, I would need a heavier wick than if I were using container wax. What size? All the wax I've looked at online costs as much or more to ship it than it costs for the wax! I don't know of any place around here to go buy it. I guess I could order some of the vybar and wicks along with some fragrance samples to see how it comes out. Also, since it's for my own use, if it worked out ok, it would be a while before I needed to buy any of the good wax. I will let you know how it turns out when I do it.
  10. Hi, I'm new here and trying to do all the reading I can. I have a LOT of glass containers from previous candles I've had and kept. I want to get started making my own to fill these. For my own use only. I happen to have a large bag, about 15, of 4 in. pillar candles, unscented, white, that were previously bought for a large candle holder that I no longer use. I know that wax for container and pillar type are not the same, but is it feasible I can recycle it, adding fragrance and pouring it into my containers, or is the wax just not right at all? It would be nice if I could use this, if nothing else just to practice on it, before I invest in other supplies. If I can use it, are there modifications I need to make? Thanks in advance for your advice!:smiley2:
