  1. This is the wax I have left when the candle goes out. I usually have wax on the side until at least the second half of the candle...but towards the end it gets cleaned up.  They're 8oz straight sided jars, HTP62 wicks (20mm x 3mm) and 6006 wax.

I have refilled my Calypso jar twice, and I get more wax left at the bottom due to the raised bottom but the sides are cleaned up like the 8oz SS jar...also with the 62 wick.

  2. I don't make candles to sell...only for my own use and friends.. I use the 3mm neck tabs and use a variety of containers.  I have never had a glass container crack or break.  With the thickness of glassnow glass containers and the raised bottom, I don't think there would be a safety issue unless the container was severely overwicked.  I get my wicks and extra tabs at https://www.canwax.com/Wick-Tab-20mm3mm_p_822.html

I always have a small amount of wax left in the bottom...I melt all the leftovers down and make firestarters out of them..

That jar Gary posted is different from the 12 ounce calypso - they don’t have that big of a lip on them

I have been using them and they do sell cork lids but you can’t fill them all the way up using them so they can push down in securely

the bottom is raised but I haven’t had any issues with excessive wax left on the bottom at all - that is where your wicking comes into play and I don’t use the high neck tab wicks (9 I believe) either I use the 6mm

here is a pic - they sell out often in several colors and they are pretty pricey but I am launching a small line of these  with a pretty price

That's right Moonshine...this morning I put my glasses on lol..and saw that it was the 6 oz jar, with 5 oz volume.  It's not a big jar at all, but I like the color of it, and its REALLY sturdy.  On mine the cork goes into the container appox. 1/4".  With a 3mm neck on the wick tab, there is very little wax left.

My problem also is..for every US dollar, it cost me about $1.28 + shipping (to Canada)...and we have HST tax of 13%...ouch.

  4. I received a container candle made by Northern Lights as a gift..I really liked the container, so after some research I found out it was a 8oz Calipso from Glass Now.  It does have a raised bottom, but when I finished the candle and refilled it, I used a wick with a small neck on the tab (3mm).  The remaining wax after it finished burning was minimal.  I think I might order some of those jars..

For a 2.5" container with a floral FO, I'd go down to a 73 or even a 63. Guarenteed every time I think I'm under wicked with the CBL 125 (very similar to 4630), I get to the bottom 1/4 of the jar and the burn finishes beautifully. If I start with what I think is a good wick, the bottom of the burn is sooty and ugly. So I think with the soft wax and HTP combo, you really need to wick for the bottom half of the jar down. IMO. 😁

Just revisiting some old posts...and I have to tell you Sarah..I have been doing what you recommended.  HTP73 worked great with 6006, 6% Lily of the Valley in the 8oz straight sided jar 2.5".  Most everything you read says you need a melt pool 1/4"-1/2" the first burn.  I find that if you size your wick to do that, by the last third of the candle there is a LARGE flame, mushrooms etc.  With a smaller wick, it seems to burn good at the start with a small amount of hangup, but takes care of that half way down.

I have Mrs. Klaus cookies that Belinda sent me a sample a long time ago and put in wax I use 464 and for me VBN from WSP is stellar.   The scent just took over the room immediately and I fell in love with it.   Such a strong strong fragrance that it lingered long after the candle was put out.   I was smitten with it ever since and have never looked any further.   I know Belinda loves Mrs. Klaus cookies and I remember they are very close to one another.   I have to agree with what she said.   You'll just have to test it for yourself.

In your opinion Trappeur...does VBN throw better than Vanilla Voodoo?  I know that used to be your go to Vanilla.

Idk about brave, but definitely stubborn. Are you a 415 user?

No LU...I don't sell candles, only test test test lol...then I use them myself and give them to servers at our local pub..my hair stylist etc... I almost had the process where I wanted it when EcoSoya decided to stop production...and I couldn't get back to where I was so I switched to 6006.  Seems to be working good.  That one poster earlier that said he mixes C3 with coco easy beads and gets a "knock your socks off" hot throw has me thinking. 😏

I, also, had over 100 fragrances tested in 415 before the changes which I saw with my 2017 batch. I think I now have about 50 tested out and am weeding out some(still have some older wax for that) and trying to streamline a little bit. That change did almost cost my mental health, but I have been pretty happy with the 'new' 415 and my product, after I got my wicking figured out. My 2 batches of wax from 2018 have been very consistent.

I do depend on the candles to supplement my income(hay for 25 horses), so I really didn't have a choice but to figure it out. Can't imagine starting with a new wax, I've used only 415 for 12 years. What wax did you end up going to?

That all being said, I did order another pallet, wish me luck.

You are a brave soul...I hope it works out for you!!

That’s a shame.  With so much competition in that market it’s really hard to make a go.

So true TT...at least in the U.S.  I wish we had more competition up here to get a better choice of products.  It takes Cdn's lots of $$$$ and time to get supplies from the U.S.  I did place an order with the original Peak's and it was quite interesting tracking my order do an unbelievable tour of the U.S.

  10. I was thinking of trying Palm, until I read this from Candle Science.  Is this bound to happen with more suppliers??

We take environmental issues very seriously at CandleScience. While developing our products to be safe and easy to use, we require them to be as environmentally friendly as possible. New information has eroded our confidence in the sustainability of palm wax. Because environmental responsibility is a critical component of our culture, we have made the very difficult decision to discontinue all palm waxes.

Maybe I should go back to woodworking?! 🔨

Yeah if you want cheap buy the labels and use the free Avery software.  I use Printshop  at home and have a color laser.  The inkjets will break the bank!  Worth it to get the laser and only buy cartridges once a year.

I paid $99 cdn for my Canon Inkjet printer which comes with "starter" cartridges...so I also purchased a new full size set of cartridges...cost me $199!!!  That was the only set I bought..I now order sets on Amazon package of 3 sets for $30.. no brainer!

I also use Avery, and their design software is very easy to use...and free.

The part about all the new styles of vessels/containers I sure wish these suppliers we all use would jump on the band wagon and get these containers into their warehouses so that we COULD get them to offer to the public.   It never seems to happen and if you can find some, the prices are just too outrageous and most of them are not registered with the candle association as far as using for the purpose of burning even though so many do use them..that part scares me.....  I admit I do buy containers such as these and do make just lovely candles, but I make strictly for me and not to the public.  I love colors, but I think what they mentioned as far as colors go has been around forever so I don't think that is anything new myself.

Lucky you aren't trying to find containers in Canada...all we have available is mason jars and a couple of other styles that have been around for decades..  Boring lids, nothing new.  I can't understand why Canadian suppliers don't get with the times.  By the way...Love your new jar and container from Candles and Supplies!!

  13. I hope that shop owner has good liability insurance!   I actually thought the same as her when I started making candles (I don't sell...just make them for me and friends).  How difficult can making a candle be?  Get a jar, plop in a wick, add some fragrance, melt some wax...fill jar and bob's your uncle!  Perfect candle....not!   I think its been 3 or 4 years for me still trying to perfect it..

Keep on good terms with her....or if there is another similar shop nearby, go to them and offer your candles to them.  I used to make clocks, and would go to all the "tourist" towns near where I live and offer them my clock and would tell them, "If you decide to carry my clocks, I will not sell to anyone else in your town".  The first shop I went to in each town took my clocks.   Clocks were much easier than a good quality candle..lol.

  14. I have recently switched to 6006 after all the changes to soy.  I have been using 6oz,  and 8oz mason jars and there seems to be quite a few wicks that work well. LX16, RRD47 (maybe a bit too large)..WI755  also seem to work well.  I even tried cotton core 44 and they seemed good too.  All of them had a small mushroom, but if trimmed, they all worked well.  I haven't tried wooden wicks in 6006, but have in other waxes, and didn't seem to work too well for me.  Talltyle did a wax test in the wicks and wax section, and the wood wick didn't perform too well.

I would like to try CD's but I have to order them from the US, and the exchange and shipping is a killer.

  15. Didn't watch the whole video...but my version of a Frankencandle, which I've done for a few years, is melting every failed tester, leftover wax from gifts, and any other wax I can find...melt it all together...forget about checking temps, then pouring it into the largest jar I can find.  Let it set up, poke a hole down the middle with a skewer, judge what wick would work...put it into said wick "hole"...and light.  Nothing planned, and sometimes they work the best..lol.
