  1. The black salve is called "ichthamol" and it works to draw out small slivers etc. Pharmacies keep it behind the counter (although I don't know why). Stinks like tar, but it works!
  2. Thank you, Jeana. I just wasn't sure if the CDNs were the wrong kind of wick to use in a pillar. I will keep testing! Thanks again~
  3. I made my first pillar this weekend and, thanks to the outstanding info to be found on this site, it turned out pretty darn good! BUT I tried using a CDN 14 and it was like a blow torch and so i rewicked it with a CDN 12 and the flame is still pretty high. The pillar is 3", KY votive/pillar, 8% FO. There are some puffs of smoke. Am I not using the right wick? Any help is appreciated, TIA!
  4. I live in their "flag ship" area so everyone has them here. Many of their containers don't get a FMP.
  5. I'm new here too but learned very quickly that there are many helpful and knowledgeable people willing to help. I use the "search" to look up all sorts of stuff; this site is loaded with info!
  6. Thank you Laura! All the suggestions are fabulous and I will give the dixie cups a try too. Making candles is breathing new life into a very long New England winter; I just love it. Thank you all for helping out a newbie!
  7. I ordered votive/pillar wax from KY this morning (I must have read your mind)! I really do appreciate your help; this board has tons of great info and helps feed my growing addiction. lol Thanks again! :highfive:
  8. Thank you for your help; I really appreciate it!
  9. Hi- I am new to candle making but am becoming a total addict! I made votives with EZ soy and stearic acid. After burning the first candle, I thought I could use a bigger wick so I melted down all the votives I had made and repoured using a bigger wick. All the wicks just pulled right out when I tried to remove the votives from the molds. EEK! What did I do? :embarasse Like I said, I am very new to this so I appreciate your input on where I went wrong. Thanks!
  10. I'm not sure if this is the same color problem as you are having, but I have been having a problem with the color separating after I burn a candle and it cools off. It forms layers color-white-color! I, too, am a newbie, so this maybe a very very basic mistake I am making but any advice is welcome! TIA Elaine
  11. I have just started learning to make soy candles (I love it!) but I pay pretty high shipping rates when ordering. I live in MA and was wondering if any New Englanders might know where I could order soy wax and not get hit quite so hard with shipping fees. Thanks!
