  1. Thanks all, Thinking back on how I did it, I was crimping towards the bottom of the tab, which caused the ends of the tab to bend up. I do have electrical crimping pliers around my house somewhere....(the hunt is on)
  2. Hello all, This may seem like a silly question but I need some help with it. How do you tab your wicks???? I'm using cd wicks which are 6 inches long. When I wick my 8 ounce candle tins, I cut off the wick and have more than half left. I have bought wick tabs but when I use pliers to secure the wick to the tab, the base bends and I don't feel confident in placing a wick with a bent base in a candle. I'm no where near selling my candles, there are just for me. Do you use a special crimping tool, needle nose pliers or something else???
  3. I try to make candles while I'm waiting for those candle to cure. I try to make candles weekly, (3 to 5), therefore, while I'm letting the candles cure that I just made, I'm lighting and taking notes on the candle I made two weeks ago. Best of luck to you!!!!
  4. Hi DG17, If you can, let your candles sit at least two weeks and the hot throw will knock your socks off. I learned that a week was good but 2 was better. The difference was amazing. I've seen that the wax hardens to a better state which makes for a better throw. best of luck.
  5. Hi GoldieMN, I'm fairly new to this forum and by no means an expert, but it might be safe to say that the 785 is too big for that jar. If you achieve a FMP, full melt pool, on the first burn and is more than 1/4 (palm wax) to 1/2 inch (soy), its a indication that your wick is too big and may need to go down. If the top of the jar is too hot to pick up without burning your hand, it is most definitely too big. Good luck with your wicking and that pint jar.
  6. So my wife loves the smell of watermelon, so naturally, I make her some soy candles with watermelon FO. A few weeks go by and I light one of the candles and put it in our bathroom. I go back to making some candles when I have to go and wash my hands. After washing my hands in the bathroom, the smell hits me........WHOA...OMG. this is wonderful, it smells like fresh sliced watermelon. As I'm thrilled to no end from the smell, my wife comes downstairs and smells the bathroom and says, is that a watermelon candle??? (Sticking my chest out, like a manly man only can) I say yes, that's the watermelon candle. Wow, she says, it almost smells as good as the liquid watermelon SOAP I put down here the other day!!! I was smelling the watermelon soap the whole time. Talk about letting the air out of my balloon, lol...
  7. Thanks OldGlory, I've been fascinated by wood wicks, but have never tried them. I might do so. I do think I'm right on track with the premier wicks. I like them a lot. I'm going to test the 795 and 798 when they come in. KandleKrazy, I think you are correct in saying that the 790 will catch up with the 2nd or 3rd burn. I think being a rookie, I want my candle to burn and I want it to correctly burn NOW!! When my 795 and 798's come in, I'm going do a comparison to see how they stack up against each other. I'm learning that candle making is more like a marathon and less of a sprint. I'm just glad that there is this friendly forum where them more experienced offers help to others. Your help is greatly appreciated.
  8. Thank you Trappeur for your insight, yes the jar is 3 inches. With your two wicks, how close/far are they apart? Old Glory, I have tried htp 1212, cd 20 and premier 790 (which looks the best so far, not hot to the touch, very little hang up in the corners, but from what I've read to be expected). I've ordered samples of premier wicks and hoping that 795 or 798 will do it. The ht (Havana Nights from SWC) with the 790 was unbelievable. I've learned that with C3, you should let it "cure" for a good 7-10 days. I'm hoping that the 795 or 798 will get to the corners of the jar but not overheat it. Any help is greatly appreciated.
  9. I know this has been talked in older posts but I'm looking any updated assistance can be given to wicking this jar. I'm trying to single wick it, 16 oz., 3.5 in diameter in C3, no dye. If you've wicked it, please help a rookie out???
  10. Hi all, This might be a silly question but here goes. Does the color of a FO determine anything, like how heavy or light the scent is, or whether or not you may need to wick up/down? Thanks
  11. What's my name?: Dante' (it was given to me from my father. Growing up, his childhood friend name was Dante' and he promised to name his first son Dante) Where am I from?; Currently I live in Rhode Island (yes it is one of the 50 states, the smallest one) How old am I?; 44 years old How did I get started and how long have I been making candles?: I got started by picking up a candle making kit at my local craft store and been hooked ever since. I have been making candles for about 3 months now and it is very much a love/hate/hate relationship. lol, seriously, I love it. Am I married/kids? Yes I am married and have been for 18 years. My wife and I have 5 wonderful children. Is candlemaking my primary job, if not what is?; I'm a social worker for the State of RI. I work with children to help them get back home from shelters and group homes. This is a wonderful hobby for me because my job is very stressful and candle making takes me to a relaxing place (usually), lol. Anything else you should know?;I played college basketball and standing 6'4 and 230 pounds, I told my wife that I was going to make candles as a hobby, she looked like seriously???? She came around quickly and is now getting into it also. People do a double take when I tell them I make scented candles as a hobby. I think because I have big hands that I'd crush the jars, spill the wax or cause an explosion. lol, stereotypes. This forum is wonderful and thank you for the knowledge.
  12. Thanks for the lesson Tall Tayl. Very much appreciated.
  13. Hi OldGlory, Thank you very much for the feedback. I have to go back and look at my notes. (another good thing I got from this forum, notetaking) I want to say that I did burn it for 3 hours in a medium sized room (a 3 on 0 to 5 scale with 5 being best). I tried a small bathroom and the HT was good. (4 on 0 to 5 scale). I'm sure it was due to the size of the small bathroom. the mp was a little more than I would have like with the cd 12 and will try to wick down to cd 10. I also love the experience of the flame, than you very much for the advice. I will re-test with 3 hour test burns and ask for a relative/friend to test for their feedback.
  14. Hi Trappeur, I let them cure for about 10 days. I thought that would give it enough time. I have seen on other posts that soy can take up to a month to be ready for optimum HT. But if that was the case, wouldn't the HT be not as powerful in the tart warmer also? Also, thanks for the wick tips, I'm ordering a sample pack and can't wait to test them out. (im like a kid on xmas eve, can't wait for the mail to get new wicks.)
