  1. I absolutely love those. May I ask where you found that mold? I would love to make some for all the kids in my family!!!
  2. I actually have the perfume and box sitting in front of me here but it has no description on it to indicate what scents it has in it. Dont know if youre going to be able to find out what is in it if the box doesnt even indicate it. Sorry--wish I could help more. Let me know if you want any other info off the box though.
  3. I have also read, though I havent tried it, that adding dry milk to clear soap will give you the opaque white color. May be something to try?
  4. Thanks so much for all the replies--Im very anxious to try the soap out now--but alas, I guess I must be patient!!!
  5. Aaaahhh-- makes sense. Even after all the reading Ive done I did not put two and two together. I remember now that the vanilla FOs do have this effect on soap and though I do not have the bottle in front of me at the moment I am almost positve that it was vanilla hazelnut. So it will eventually turn the same color throughout? That works. Will have to try a different fragrance next time though because it sure was pretty out of the mold. What do people have to say about 100% coconut soap? Ive heard that it can be drying but will it lather well in salt water?
  6. Welcome to soapmaking! I am new at making CP soap (which is but one of the reason I joined this board) but have been making M&P soap for years. You have an amazing amount of options when working with M&P. I usually start out with a basic 'hand milled' recipe before adding anything else but you certainly dont have to. Some of my favorite things to add are: cinnamon--1/4 tsp per 6 oz. of soap ginger--1/8 tsp per 6 oz chamomile--contents of one tea bag usually will do the trick unbrewed coffee--about 1 tsp per 6 oz There are also a bunch of fruits and vegetables that you can add but you will definitely need a preservative for those. You can also find recipes to add cornmeal, aloe, vit E, sand, witch hazel, almond and all other kinds of herbs and spices. Pick a recipe, try it out and have fun!
  7. Hi all, I made a 100% coconut oil soap about a week and a half ago by request of my husband. He works with salt water all day and is looking for something that will lather in salt water. We did some reading and found that 100% coconut oil will produce a soap that will later in salt water. Has anyone tried this? How well does it work? Also, I made the soap with 100% coconut oil, no color or other additives other than FO at 1oz per pound. When I added the FO the soap turned a nice peachy color and hardened up nicely within about a day after pouring into my mold. But now a week and a half later it is turning a strange rust color all along the edges and now starting on the top and sides. It still looks OK and I can live with it but it isnt nearly as pretty as when it first hardened. Does anyone know if this discoloration will continue throughout the entire soap or what is causing it? Thanks
  8. I've never tried this before but I have a recipe for making liquid hand soap out of m&p base. 4oz white glycerin soap 2c. water grate soap. spread on cookie sheet and allow to dry for 72 hours. place water and grated soap in measuring cup and slowly melt in microwave. stir and cool mixture. if too thin, add soap. if too thick, add water. mixture can be reheated. when cool, pour into pump bottle. Like I said, I've never tried this but if you have extra base you may try it out. Let me know how it turns out if you do. Andrea
  9. For future reference--what should the soap feel like when it is ready to be cut? I know you dont want it too hard or it will crumble but is there usually a grace period between letting it sit for 24 hours and having it too hard to cut? Just not real sure how you know when. I just went and cut the soap (patience is not one of my virtues!) and it actually cut nice. Didnt turn to mush like I had thought but definitely no where near soap consistency. Ill let it sit and cure now for a good long time and hopefully it will turn out alright. So far it still looks good and smells good so Ill keep my fingers crossed. Will try another batch here soon and will make it a much bigger batch! Working with these small quantities is a little tough--hubby just said that I can go ahead and buy a better scale. Am using the same one that Ive been using for my candle making for years but exact accuracy is obviously much more important here. Thanks for all your input today and in the future--cuz I am sure Ill have many more questions for you all!
  10. Very basic recipe to see if I liked the whole process: 16 oz lard 5 oz water 2 oz lye (found this recipe in a couple of different books I had looked) also added a teaspoon of cinnamon for internal coloring and 2 drops of water based coloring on the top for a slight coloring and less than .25 oz of FO
  11. OK--I need a little help here. I have been researching and reading about CP soap for months and months. Decided this past weekend to try my first batch. Made it Sunday evening. Recognized the whole trace thing (as far as I know) added my FO and a bit of color and such and then poured in the mold. Covered with a towel and let sit for 24 hours. Checked back Monday night and it certainly firmed up quite a bit but it was still the consistency of like jello maybe? Can easily push my finger into it and stuff--still like that this morning too. Now been sitting for 36+ hours. With everything I read I never found anything that tells me how the soap should feel before cutting it. It looks like it would just turn to mush if I tried to cut it. What should it be like when I go to cut it? Its still in the mold and I can remove it if I need to because I lined the box. Sorry if this is a stupid question but Im really not quite sure where Im at in the process. Is it ready to cut? Should I let it sit in the mold another day or two? Should I remove it from the mold and let it sit on the counter? Any help would be appreciated! And if this whole batch turns out alright, I think I will be addicted!
  12. Hi everyone! I have been lurking on this site for about the last year or so and always figured that the first post I made would be on the candle side as I have been making candles for many years. But recently I acquired a bunch of B&B supplies from someone and my interest has been piqued. Problem is that other than M&P soaps that I have made over the years I have no experience with B&B and frankly don't know what to do with some of these supplies that were given to me. Maybe if I ask real nice some of you could help me out? Anyway--the first item I have is a huge bag of bath bomb base. I have no idea what it is (though I know what bath bombs are) or whats in it or how to use it. I briefly did a search but couldnt find something to help me out with this. The other item (so far) that Im not real sure of is the jojoba beads. Not sure what these are used for or how much to use or anything else about them. Most of the other items that I have received I have a working knowledge of or at least have an idea about what to do with them. But I really look forward to making this cross over to the B&B side of things and getting to know all of you---though after lurking for so long I feel that I know some of you already--so maybe you could all get to know me! Thanks in advance for any input you can give! edit--sorry this should have gone inthe general B&B area--happened to be looking in the recipe section for answers when I posted--wont happen again!!!! maybe someone can move it for me? Thanks
