  1. I've bought wax from Hobby Lobby on three seperate occasions, and it always looks like that :undecided I'm not sure what fingernailing is, but I haven't liked the finished product of my candles when I work with it. I figured it was something I was doing, but maybe not eh?
  2. Thank you guys for this thread. I have a hurricane cooling its heels in a warm water bath. Fingers crossed! Last night I tried to make one and it was a total mess. I'm hoping it was the water bath issue...
  3. Wow, all of yours are extremely nice. So smooth and such beautiful colors. Way to go!
  4. Thanks you guys. "Granted, it can be any way you want, but that rough "top" is actually the bottom. Once it's trimmed and leveled, nobody would ever know the difference" Hehe, I know! The "real" top looked nice, but I just loved the grubbiesh look for the top on this one. So Merry Christmas to me! LOL I adore this gallery, everyone makes such awesome candles. Hopefully I'll get the professional look down someday that so many have mastered. Thanks again!
  5. Doh! Gosh I'm slow sometimes. Top, thank you for your suggestions too! I ended up making it the way I said I was considering 128 for the chunks and 145 for the overpour and it ended up fairly decent. I posted a photo in the gallery. I'm happy with it for my very first attempt at a chunk candle.
  6. I wanted to try a chunk candle with the colors I had in mind and testing the wick before I make one for my brother. It's supposed to be Ferris State University colors. I've learned a couple things from this round, but am overall pleased. This one was made from some leftover wax that was starting to congeal and I wondered what would happen if I added some orange liquid dye and threw it in the mold. I was pleasantly surprised. This won't be a gift mainly because I like the way the top looks and I'm doubtful others will? I've also made a five wick long xmas loaf, tophalf white and bottom half red. I took a photo but it came out crappy. It's a very pretty xmas candle, but I've definitely gotta work on the wicking. The melt pool is pathetic. I started this "hobby" a month or so ago and basically what I've learned is that I love trying new things and that I will continue this hobby to make candles for myself and as gifts. I definitely have years to go before even considering trying to sell, so for right now I'm just going to enjoy all the trial and error and have fun with it.
  7. Hi all, I have two waxes right now. Some 128MP straight parrafin that I want to use up as well as some nice 145MP straight parrafin. Would it be possible for me to make chunks with 128MP (I don't really like the look of this wax and think it wouldn't be so noticeable in chunks) and use the 145 as the overpour? Will it cause the chunks to bleed a little or completely melt? Or is that moreso determined on what I heat the 145MP wax to? I'm sorry, I'm rather new and still trying to learn about wax and what things I need to be careful of with regards to brands and MP's. My end result goal - a "chunk" letter F for "Ferris State University" in burgandy, gold colored chunks holding it up, and an overpour of white. Any ideas/suggestions/criticisms of my goal, would be very much so appreciated. Thanks so much, Michelle
  8. Wow, that is a very cool candle, good job! I'm still working on the rustic look :undecided
  9. Holy moly, that is GORGEOUS. I'm sorry the wax keeps falling off, definitely let us know how the dip goes. I would really like to make something that looks similar to that.
  10. Those are really nice. I've never done the baked goods candles, I'm rather new. I take it these sell really well, since I've seen them everywhere? Do most buyers use them for decoration or burning?
  11. Wow, those are beautiful, same shade of pink I'm wearing right now! lol
  12. Wow, those are really nice, such smooth tops.
  13. My dad put mine together on Thanksgiving, I can't wait to try it out! I was a little shocked that between the hardware and the tools that he needed to buy I ended up spending another $35, but I still think it was worth it. I'm a single mom and usually roll up my sleeves and do everything myself, but this was one project I gladly handed over
  14. I just got one Sunday after a boardie told me how cheap they were there. I'm loving it, especially for quickly heating jars and for smoothing out rough edges. I think someone mentioned you can use your cello wrap to package your candles and then you can get it to wrap nicely by using the heat gun. I haven't tried it yet though. Also picked up a presto pot from Walmart for $21.00 I've enlisted my father for helping me put it together on Turkey day (pre-turkey, he's too sleepy after )
  15. Wow, that is a gorgeous Fall candle - I love the colors!
