  1. Hi everyone... Thanks for all your input! I will give all your suggestions a try as I really want to have success with my candles! I am thinking that the FO is part of the culprit, today a few of the candles are oozing oil...GAK! Could my house be too warm for them? It is 107 outside, but a comfy 78 in here. I scented them at 6% per the instructions that came with the wax, but I think that may be too much. When I remelt the wax tomorrow, I am going to mix it in with some unscented and uncolored wax to "cut" the concentration, get it better mixed in and straighten out that darn wick! Most of the wicks were fine.......:embarasse I will post another pic tomorrow. As for the "natural" comment........thanks gals who understood that I was simply being ironic. Peace, Jen
  2. Well, I went ahead and hit it with the heat gun and that seemed to really help it to smooth out...but not all creamy and smooth like typical soy...so I am not sure what is going on! I purchased this FO because I was assured it did well in soy...but maybe my stuff (Cargill Naturewax C3) just didn't feel like being a good hostess to the FO party!!! :highfive: Ah, the beauty of a natural product!
  3. Ok...so I poured some soy candles today and this is how they have behaved, any ideas what would cause this? I added the FO (from Peaks Candle) at 6% at a temp of 155 degrees and poured at 127 degrees. I am thinking that I can fix this with a heat gun or something so I am not that worried...but what the heck caused this??
  4. Thanks Kelly for the quick response! I hadn't thought about the wick height.... I did purchase wicks that were 2 sizes larger than I have used in the past because of issues with not burning to the edge...so hopefully that will help. Thanks again! Jen
  5. Greetings All! I am going to be making some soy candles and will be using the 8oz seamless tins from Peaks. Is there anything I should know about using tin versus using glass? These are for a swap and I thought it would be better to ship tin....plus I just love to try new things!! :rolleyes2 Thanks for any help or advice! Peace, Jen
  6. Wow...those are really striking! I just paid a visit to your website and I am in awe of your work!!! Your Hummingbird and Flower luminaries are on my "gotta have that" list! Next time hubby wants to get me a gift, he will get the link to your website! Thanks for the inspiration. Peace, Jen
  7. I have sold these before and I advise people to set the bag on a small, flat votive candle holder...like the little glass ones that you can get at Walmart. If it is for a "sachet" for the drawer, I recommend putting the bag in a small cup type votive holder in the drawer. That contains any oil and keeps the clothes safe from touching it. Peace, Jen
  8. Thank you for the info and the link...what a great site!:highfive:
  9. I come here once again to humbly ask for your expert help.... In a container candle, how big should the melt pool be? Ok...settle down....stop laughing hysterically!! I did a search for it on the forum, but most of the info was for pillar candles and after 30 minutes of reading through those posts, I decided to swallow my pride, face public ridicule and ask the question.. Peace, Jen
  10. Hi Everyone! Thanks for all the input! We followed the instructions on the Lonestar Candle Supply site and poured at approx 150 degrees. I hit it with a heat gun today and it smoothed out fairly well....I suspect an overpour would give the more desired result of a super smooth top. As for the little specks, I really think it is just because the little shavings didnt fully melt or get fully stirred into the wax. My hubby was getting antsy about me stirring "too long"....so I went against my gut feeling and poured it! It reminds me of the speckled robins egg candies! I won't know about the scent throw (hot) until I let it cure a while....which drives me nuts! I am an instant gratification kind of gal!! I am learning the value of patience with soap making and now candle making!! :embarasse Thanks again for all your great advice and ideas! Peace, Jen
  11. Thanks for the help...I will give that a try!:highfive:
  12. My hubby and I decided to make some candles today. We used Nature Wax C3 Soy. The candle is scented with Red Currant FO and colored with some shavings off of a color block (I know....the speckles are because some of the shavings didn't melt all the way...) They weren't moved or disturbed at all... We made some other candles and scented them with Vaniglia Del Madagascar and didn't color them...they turned out beautifully. So...what causes this cave in? Thanks! Jen
  13. Thanks for the welcome! I think my eyes are going buggy reading through the posts!! Meridith, I live in Stockton...waaayyyy south Stockton....more like north Lathrop!! My hubby and I are really working on moving up to Oregon. He currently drives to Pleasanton every day , so we want to move somewhere that he can get a good job and we can get some land. We are thinking around Eugene or Springfield.....
  14. Even though I make lots of lotions and butters, I happen to love Aveeno lotion. Sometimes I add a few drops of fragrance oil to it. My advice...but a good quality lotion and only scent a little at a time. I usually take out a few ounces and add the FO to that. You would also need to be careful about how much FO you add so as not to lose the emulsion. That being said, I would never sell it or pass it off as my own.
  15. Hello! I have been making CP soap and other bath products for almost 2 years now, so I decided to jump in and learn to make nice candles. The only candles I have made are the "Sand Candles" I made as a kid with my family out on the beach. We would melt the wax on our Coleman camp stove in a coffee pot, dig a "mold" out of the sand and pour our crayon colored wax! They were pretty cool candles....at least they were to a 9 year old girl!! Anyhoo...I am interested in making soy candles and I would appreciate any advice you would care to share, or if you have some threads you can suggest that I read through. I do have one really specific question: I have purchased some handmade candles online from various crafters and I noticed that some of the wicks kinda get a mushroom head on them after they get burned....what causes this? Is it a specific kind of wick that does this? Any tried and true wicks that you can recommend??? Thanks everyone....I am anxious to get going on this! Peace, Jen
