  1. Not to drastically change/hijack the subject, but you made me think. The "perfect candle" is such an interesting subject. In your intro you mention a variety of things... MP, throw strength, hangups. What we call perfect depends on context and goals. For my relative that wants to bake in FO? They probably don't care about anything more than the HT and scent (meanwhile their candle has mushrooms that would make the 60's jealous). Conversely, my fellow makers might care much more about melt pool characteristics and a long lasting burn life instead of optimizing the HT for an auditorium! And is it perfect for the customer, the maker, or the at-home crafter that "just wanted to be successful" at even making the darn thing? That's one of the things we should love about this trade/craft/muse.

  2. During all of my 8 years at the Faire my, “Prevent the Plague, Wash thy Hands” sign would get a lot of laughs. Then people would get a thoughtful look on their faces, nod, and start picking up soap to buy. at least one ren Faire in Arizona officially just canceled the closing 2 weeks. That is financially catastrophic for merchants who work the other 7 weeks in anticipation of finally turning a profit the last 2 weekend. Sherwood Forest Faire in Tx says screw that, nerds just want to have fun and are staying open. Let’s all hope everyone is OK. It’s not like faires are the cleanest places on a good day. Hep A flew through Michigan’s Faire 2 summers ago. Sorry folx, I don’t need a truly authentic Renaissance Experience complete with diseases. The first year at ours I have some gut stuff I’m 100% certain was from filthy money privvy hands.

  3. Great explanation! I agree with our suppliers trying to appease multiple markets and it does seem to affect performance in wax. Yes there are many that throw well, but I can tell lack of longevity from majority that are made skin safe. That is to be expected as being too concentrated would give negative skin reactions. Even retailers that call themselves a candle company have lots of oils made for candle making and skincare. I want more candle only focused oil companies!!

  4. The Michigan Faire is generally filthy. I've gone twice and it was kind of gross. I loved the Faire in Houston. It was much cleaner than Michigian though it's been years now.

  5. I use Soaper's Choice for oils/butters, sometimes Essential Depot has a good sale. For my salt I use San Francisco Salt Company or Wholesale Supplies Plus.

  6. Soaper's Choice Websturantstore Would be my first 2 picks for fats and such THEN I'd keep my eyes peeled for some specials from: Bulk Apothocary (I buy my lye in bulk when they have some sort of SUPER special on it and sometimes castor and sodium lactate...) Brambleberry All sorts of stuff. (They've gotten much more competitively priced on a lot of things.) For colorants and some additives I use Mica's & More and sometimes TKB Trading (mostly bulk oxides). For FO's I use Mica's and More, Candlescience, and Just Scents. Them's my go-to's! 7. Those of you selling on Etsy or elsewhere, how are you doing? Maybe this is a wake up call for those who have been considering an online store? I think once the virus is under control the market place will be booming! That’s my prediction.

  9. It is going to be a scary 2020. There will be a recession, there will be many canceled events, and when there are events sales will be less that we are use to. I live in Buffalo, NY. Schools are all closed till at least thru 4/12, already talk through the end of the school year. Many local businesses will start closing New York State, the counties and towns have all declared a State of Emergency. County Executive strongly urged the workforce to stay home. And this is just in my area. The reality is that this is a WORLD WIDE issue. Fortunately I have a day time job that I think is secure, and selling candles is a side job. I expect some of the gift shops I am in to be closed by the end of the year. I expect some of my competition will lower their prices to try and sell more. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

  10. What about a cookie scent? Or maybe zucchini bread and add a little cookie to it. Or I'm wondering if ICS sugar cookie dough would work as a mixer? To me that has a bread/cake type smell without any banana scent to it. Hope this helps.
