  1. Thanks, I'll go for the stuff at WSP, it is much cheaper, and the PEG-40 Castor does not seem to add much, at least that I can find. With 4 girls in the house, all with different hair, I hope one of my beginning detangler trials work. Thanks, Michael
  2. I am wanting to make this detangling spray from Swift's blog, http://swiftcraftymonkey.blogspot.com/2010/06/conditioners-detanglers-with-incroquat.html. I have not found the Incroquat CR. Anyone know where I can find some, or is there a better alternative now. I found the cetrimonium chloride, so I am going to try that version to, but I would like to try with the Incroquat CR as well. Thanks, Michael
  3. Hi, I finally got my first batch of cp soap done and tested. It has taken me almost 9 months to get it done from when I started thinking of doing it. My first recipe was 70% lard, 15% coconut oil, and 15% castor oil with 7% super fat. So nothing real complicated. It went well for the most part. I used my stick blender, so trace happened much faster then I expected. I was thinking I would be doing it for 30 minutes at least, and it took no where near that long. It went from runny pancake batter to thick cake batter in no time. I did get it in the home made log mold and covered. I did the tongue test and did not get a zap, so I used some. It has nice lather and bubbles, and seemed to get me pretty clean. I just got done exercising. it seemed to leave my skin a little dry though. Maybe I am just used to all the residue that gets left behind with my store bought stuff. Or maybe it needs to sit a little longer, or I just need less coconut oil in soaps for me. I have a batch of 100% OO to try later. I used a spiced apple FO in it. I also did a hp batch of about 90% OO and 10% coconut oil with a sweet pea FO in it. So all-in-all the first time making soap, I would consider a success. I will be making a lot more over the next few months. My wife thinks we need to make some and have a booth at our county fair next summer. Michael
  4. Okay, thanks. looks like a mold 10 inches long would work for 1000 gram batches of oils, which is a little over 35 oz. that should get me 10 bars that are 3.5 x 2.5 x 1. I will get started on the molds tonight. I was hoping to have my first batch of soap done by now. I can't wait to get the first one out of the way. Thanks, Michael
  5. I am making my own wooden log molds, and I am trying to figure how big to make it. I have seen the formula for height times width times depth times .40 for the amount of soap the mold can hold. I am looking for a little clarification though. I have enough wood to make 4 molds that are 12.5 x 3.5 x 2.75 for interior dimensions. With the formula this would be 48.125 oz. Now is this 48.125 the weight of just the oils, or is this the total weight of the mixture, including oils, water, lye, etc.? I was going to make my first soap with 1000 grams (35.27 oz.) of oils, but when you add the water and lye you get about 1515 grams (53.44 oz.)total. Any clarification would be nice. Thanks, Michael
  6. what!? Addiction? What have I got myself in to? Is there a soaper anonymous? I know my wife is excited for me to start making soap. She wants me to make glycerin soap, cause when she could afford it at Bath and Body Works, she would get it and thought it was so great. I assured her it was going to all be glycerin soap. Michael
  7. Hi, I thought I would stop in and say hi. I didn't find an introduction forum, so I hope here is fine. I am new to soap making. I have learned a lot from reading, and nothing from experience yet. I am currently gathering everything up to make my first batches of soap. it will most likely be another week or two away though. I have not decided on CP or HP yet, so I will give both a shot and see how it goes. My lye is on the way, it is hard to find around here, I have some oils on hand but need a few more, and I need to get a few minutes to put a mold together. I have the wood for the mold. I have the scale and I am still waiting on the deer tallow. this should be interesting, that is for sure. Michael
