Hoppes No.9 cleaner is a solvent used to clean guns & metals. The company does make air freshners of this scent.

Anyone have any ideas where I might be able to find this or a formula to duplicate the smell?

Any help is GREATLY appreciated!!

Thanks!! Renee

Now that is a weird request, but an interesting one nonetheless!

Might could try a blend of .40 banana(any type) .50 rubber cement and .10 neem

Rubber cement can be purchased at SOS.

The original has a very distinct banana aroma with a backnote of solvency metallic smell, hence the neem and rubber cement combo. Try that! Don't know of an exact FO dupe yet.

Hope that get's you going in the right direction. SOS also has a Motor Oil FO, that's might work, should the Rubber Cement not be aggressive enough. Not sure of an exact formula...just going by a mixing reference. If too much banana once mixed add more Rubber Cement FO.

Now I have to run downstairs and smell it LOL. My husband is the firearms instructor and the police department armorer, I've smelled that smell a million times, but never paid attention to it. Off I go to the basement! What a strange scent request LOL.

Thanks! This was one of the FOs I designed for them. LOL.

Great work indeed!

Incidentally, I requested a fragrance from Save on Scents to replicate the uber metallic smell of

a wet penny or a brass doorknob. They said they didn't have any plain metallic base but they'd let me know.

A couple months later I checked their new fragrances and they had "Metallic Copper" which is said to resemble a corroded penny. I ordered it of course and although it is metallic it's still not quite there for me. It has a strong cinnamon note but only on the hot throw. I actually added a drop of SOS "garlic" to make it more metallic, which helped but I would LOVE to figure out a metal FO on my own.

You sound indeed like the expert to ask here; do you have any suggestions or offerings for a super metallic, bloody penny FO?

Thanks!

You hit the nail on the head...smart move adding garlic. This scent is also one I created, but they did it a disservice by using too much eugenol (clove-like aroma chemical). A little of it imparts a dry musty warm metal smell a lot just makes it sweet and spicy. I tried to get them to reformulate it but too many customers had already ordered it to warrant a resub. Plus they wanted a more rounded fragrance verus something linear in aroma profile. In fact this is one of the big issues with FOs. Most fragrance oils, even the novelty ones, are not nearly as linear or "one-note" as I would personally like them to be.

Back on topic, Garlic SOS in particular can offer those same metallic coper aromas and WOULD help in hiding the overused clove-like aspect. So smart move in adding it! :)

For a truer copper metalic you'd probably want to start with a base of safranal or a Saffron EO BOTH of which are VERY expensive...and maybe pair it with a soft balsam, a piney aroma.

Try hitting your Metallic Copper with a little Balsam (Christmas Tree aroma) and more Garlic. It should get you pretty close.

BTW, sounds like our interests are similar. Shoot me a PM sometime we'll talk novetly fragrances!
