Essential depot had that questionable soaping lye a few years back. Belittled experienced soapers, lied and did a crappy job of making it right. No way I'd support them again.

@TallTayl, are you sure it is the same company? I have no experience with them but when I search Craft server, all the reviews are good. I know some members buy from them, hence my sharing the information. If they are not a good company, I do apologize.

It is the same. I have a few of their soap molds with their logo I nearly tossed I was so disgusted with their biz practices.

There was no discussion here but plenty at others that focused on soap and on Facebook.  ED covered it up on their site and Facebook group deleting any references. They got bad reviews on amazon and deleted those products later reposting under new product id's to hide the negative reviews. It was a fiasco that lasted several months.

No way you could have known had you not been in the middle of it.

Yes, it was ED. They had lye that was testing at lest than 60% potency but lied about it, said it was not the lye, that the soapers had to be doing something wrong (they were saying this to soapers who had been soaping for YEARS on a regular basis) and as TT said, they deleted any bad reviews for it, and after a few months when everything settled down, they acted as if it never happened. No apology, no trying to make it right, nothing.

I bought from them often (love my silicone molds with the wire baskets from them), but after that and just the shady way they dealt with it, I'm gun-shy from them and haven't purchased since.

I should have added, I would order my lye from them at 32lbs at a time (16, 2lb bottles) every time I ordered lye from them. I was very lucky and never had any sort of problems at the time with any of the lye I purchased from them, but I personally know several several soapers that had purchased the bad lye, who only wanted simple answers, but never got them. Several had the lye independently tested, which is how it was found out the potency was not up to par...

I actually like their products, and think they have reasonable prices on most of their items, but as I said, that whole fiasco, has me gun-shy with them.

@Jcandleattic and @TallTayl where have you found has the most reliable source for lye - soaping oils + butters such as shea etc. Wow Ive never heard any of this stuff

Im glad I didn't buy any of their Argan oil, the price seemed very, very low to me. I sometimes watch soaping videos on Youtube and theres a lady from the South, I think

her name is Kimberly? Anyhow, she was always promoting Essential Depot so I went to check out the site but never ordered. Was this recently that this happened?

I think the quality of their oils, etc., was up to par, just not the lye that one time. Not everyone had problems, so I think it was just with certain lots, however, it's just how they handled it on the public forums, and with the consumers who did have problems is what I had a problem with.

This happened about a 2 years ago now? I think? ...

For base oils and butters, you can't beat the price for quality you get at Soapers Choice.

Lye, I go with either Duda Diesel, or the Lye Guy.

I'm still trying to find another local chemistry supply store like the one I used about 12 years ago, that went out several years ago.

Wow, that is just terrible.  I did not know about this. Thank you both for bringing it up!

@Moonstar that Kimberly is an affiliate, and does promote their brand.

She teaches soapmaking classes on behalf of ED too. Right around when the lye issues were going on they were on a live Facebook video feed of her class. Lo and behold her tried and true soap was so soft it would not untold. It was a wet play dough, yet they still denied any problems.

Even worse than the way ED handled the mess was how some soapers were getting around the problem by adding more and more lye until it looked right. I kid you not. No scientific basis for that, just a lot of really questionable soap. Honestly, just write off bad ingredients as a loss and buy from a different source. Why throw good money after bad trying to salvage a little Lye?

@Moonstar

I've used ED's lye before and never had a problem with it other than the opening of the bottle being too small to fit a proper tablespoon. I AM, however, leery of them not only because of the lye debacle but also because they have SO MANY products that while the initial sticker price is great the shipping is DEATH incarnate. They are in Florida so I "could" make the 2+ hour drive down there and pick up the stuff if I was so inclined to order a very large order, and I might do that in the future. I am also leery of them because of the "join our club" horseshit is ALWAYS a red flag to me, yes even with Amazon. Whenever I see that sort of "deal" It bugs me in much the same way credit card companies offer their customers "cash back" bugs me because there is almost never any ROI on any membership subscription. I mean think about it... Most soapmakers and chandlers are ordering their supplies from multiple sources, there's no one-stop-shopping for us. Personally, I chase the sales, and that means I may have a glut of any particular material at any particular time, e.g. Bulk's had a lye sale twice this year (and BOTH sales inside of 6 months of each other) and I am the proud owner of 95 lbs. of lye. One of my suppliers stopped carrying several of my best selling soap FO's and I had to get in on that fire sale too so I have a BUTT LOAD of FO's heading my way (OMG...I STILL can't believe how much FO I ordered)... Amazon Prime? No. Just NO... I have a Prime membership but it in NO WAY pays for itself. Amazon STILL offers non Prime customers free shipping but it's a slower free shipping. I only have a prime membership to get at certain merchandise that is otherwise not available to non Prime members. So, yeah subscription memberships, unless you are getting an actual service, or product, (magazine's, food stuff, cleaning) almost never pay for themselves, not in my experience anyway.

BUT BACK to ED. Cialis! That's the ans...(Oh *blushes* uh...)

Basically I'm leery of ED because they're inconsistent. ANY inconsistency ANYWHERE in a company is a "red flag parade" to me. That doesn't mean I won't buy from an inconsistent company, but I'm going to be hyper vigilant when doing so.

I LOVE my Prime membership and it totally pays for itself for me within 2-3 months every year.  I would pay so much more on the merchandise I get from there if I didn't have it. And even when I didn't have it, I would pay the 2-day shipping because I usually procrastinate so much, I need that fast shipping, so getting it 'free' is a huge bonus for me.

This year is the first year in the however many years I've had Prime (many, as it was only $35 a year for the first 5 years I was a member - now that's just an introductory price!) that I've ever had problems. I would say probably 30-40% of my orders come late, with an explanation of "were sorry, weather or some other made up bullshit blah blah blah" LOL If this continues through next year I'll seriously think about dropping them, but so far, it's been pretty good to me.
