need help with with wicking this jar

Recommended Posts

I know this has been talked in older posts but I'm looking any updated assistance can be given to wicking this jar.  I'm trying to single wick it, 16 oz., 3.5 in diameter in C3, no dye.  If you've wicked it, please help a rookie out???

Ok Im going to assume that jar is give or take about 3" tall?

I have 2 jars that are 3 1/2" wide and the wicks I use in c3 are the following:

Either 1 htp 1212 or

          1 cd 22 or

          2 cd 5 (double wicked)

I'm sure others will come here and put up their findings, but this is what I use for that wax.

Thank you Trappeur for your insight, yes the jar is 3 inches.  With your two wicks, how close/far are they apart?

Old Glory, I have tried htp 1212, cd 20 and premier 790 (which looks the best so far, not hot to the touch, very little hang up in the corners, but from what I've read to be expected).  I've ordered samples of premier wicks and hoping that 795 or 798 will do it.  The ht (Havana Nights from SWC) with the 790 was unbelievable.  I've learned that with C3, you should let it "cure" for a good 7-10 days.

I'm hoping that the 795 or 798 will get to the corners of the jar but not overheat it.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm glad you are trying the Premier series. I have used them exclusively in 464 for years and I love their performance. I think you are on the right track with the sizes, so just keep going. Some fragrances may be more difficult than others.

I have wicked that jar with 464, but I don't remember which wick I used. It was many years ago.

Another option is a wood wick, probably two size 4's from BCN would do it, but you might have to go to a 4 and a 5. It's easiest to put them in a back to back formation. If the bottom of the jar is getting too hot you can always trim the side(s) on the bottom half of the 5. LOVE WOOD WICKS!!

Thanks OldGlory, I've been fascinated by wood wicks, but have never tried them.  I might do so.  I do think I'm right on track with the premier wicks.  I like them a lot.  I'm going to test the 795 and 798 when they come in.

KandleKrazy, I think you are correct in saying that the 790 will catch up with the 2nd or 3rd burn.  I think being a rookie, I want my candle to burn and I want it to correctly burn NOW!!  When my 795 and 798's come in, I'm going do a comparison to see how they stack up against each other.

I'm learning that candle making is more like a marathon and less of a sprint. I'm just glad that there is this friendly forum where them more experienced offers help to others.   Your help is greatly appreciated.

Definitely a marathon! Whew, I've been making candles for 14 years and I'm still learning, adjusting, taking on new challenges. We all have moments of sheer frustration, and then moments of pure bliss. :laugh2:

Hi GoldieMN,

I'm fairly new to this forum and by no means an expert, but it might be safe to say that the 785 is too big for that jar.  If you achieve a FMP, full melt pool, on the first burn and is more than 1/4 (palm wax)  to 1/2 inch (soy),  its a indication that your wick is too big and may need to go down.  If the top of the jar is too hot to pick up without burning your hand, it is most definitely too big.  Good luck with your wicking and that pint jar.

Goldie, try the 780. Yes, the issue could be the narrowing of the neck, but maybe it's not. Keep burning the candle all the way thru and see how it does the rest of the way. You could try the wide mouth pint and see if you like the results more than the regular jar.

Trappeur wicks this jar all the time. She might be able to give you better advice. I know she doesn't use Premier wicks.

Keep in mind that there will be some heat building up in that jar as it burns down. That will probably catch up the corners and you won't need a bigger wick. I'm probably too late and you've already figured it out!
