Crystals in FO

Happy 4th everyone. Hope you all eat lots of delicious grilled foods and see some cool fireworks!

Anyway...

I feel like I remember seeing someone write that certain FOs gets some crystals in them? Is that correct?

I was pouring candles last night and my bottle of Kentucky Bourbon from Aztec (awesome scent and killer throw!) had something that seemed to be slooshing around in the bottle when I turned it upside down to pour. It was really weird. So I took the lid off and started poking around with a skewer and it was all crystally and clumpy at the bottom. A pretty significant chunk; I'd say a third of the 16oz bottle was just a big crystally chunky glob. I broke it up with skewers as best I could and continued to pour candles. The measuring pyrex glass that I use for measuring and pouring FOs had all sorts of crystal chunk residue after pouring.

Then candles seem to look fine today.

Is this normal? What do I do with the crystals? Just keep trying to break them up and measure as usual? Will this mess up the awesome scent of my Bourbon and Tobacco candles (my favorite blend right now. Seriously, give it a try!!)?

This bottle is only about 2 months old.

Thanks for any help clearing up my confusion about this!

I have found crystals in my Cranberry fragrances over the years too. I don't remember the remedy but I'll get back to the thread if I come across it. Might be heating the FO a little - like a hot water bath. But I am not sure.

(Hot water bath would be putting hot water in a cup and putting the bottle tightly capped in the hot water and letting it sit for a while)

Do you store in a cool area? The others are right, warm water bath, good shake and some patience will work wonders. It only happens to me in the winter when my basement is particularly cool/cold.

Even though the basement is significantly cooler than the rest of the house, especially when the AC is on, I don't normally get this issue in summer, but if I did, I would do the warm water bath to get rid of them.

Thanks for the advice everyone. A warm water bath did the trick.

Jcandle--I do store in a cool area. My little workspace is in my basement which is nice and mild year round. That's why I was so confused at first when it appeared to have "frozen". But then I remember a For Sale post where the lister said that a FO had crystals but that was normal for that fragrance.

So the crystallization doesn't hurt the integrity of the oil? If it happens again, just warm water bath again? And the oil will still be a-ok?

I don't recall ever having a oil crystalize on me before but there is always a first time. I do remember one of my suppliers, Peaks? would send out little slips of paper with instructions for oils that crystalize. Like everyone suggested I remember it saying to warm the bottle a bit and the crystals will dissolve. That its normal for some oils to do that and they will be perfectly fine.

They crystallization won't hurt the integrity of the oil; just might freak you out a little. :)  I store my oils in the basement as well where it's nice and cool.  My vanilla sugared shortbread almost turns into a complete solid.  Hasn't turned funky on me yet!
