soap_nut
I was planning on making a soap this weekend using grapefruit and orange EOs but I've seen recommendations to add litsea cubeba to help anchor these scents. Of course no local places carry this and shame on me for not planning ahead Will I be dissapointed with the result if I decide to make it without the litsea? Or is there another EO or additive that would work? I have lemon & lemongrass as other "fruity" EOs. Thanks!
Candybee
Orange EO will fade. I don't even bother buying the sweet orange or 5x orange EOs anymore. No matter what you do they will fade over time. Next time get some 10x orange EO. Litsea Cubeba does help as an anchor but it will only help the orange temporarily. Eventually within a few days or weeks it will fade. It will help the grapefruit thou.
Guest OldGlory
Does using a clay help to anchor orange EO? Like a white kaolin clay.
Candybee
Not from my experience. Its a shame because an orange scented soap is wonderful. As a matter of fact I have not had any fragrances benefit from trying to use clay as an anchor. I have tried recipes both with and without clay to see if it really anchors and scent and so far have not seen that it makes one bit of difference. BTW-- I just made a batch of orange spice soap scented with orange 10x, clove, cinnamon, and litsea EOs, and some honey FO. This is my second batch using 10x orange. I still have some of the original orange spice soaps and they just keep getting better with age. Sold a bunch of them last week. So orange can be done its just you have to use a strong enough one like the 10 fold (10x) orange or higher. Plus the litsea helped to give the scent a stronger and 'sharp' citrus note that lasts so its a pretty good anchor.
Scented
You could try some of these suggestions http://www.pallasathenesoap.com/articles/EssenOil.pdf Or you could blend your citrus with patch, because it does go great with both EOs. Just sayin'.

Where do you get your 10x orange? Do you think it would help to add orange zest? I made a lemon & lemongrass soap recently and added lemon zest. Still seems to be holding the scent but it has only been about 2 months.

Candybee
I got the orange 10x from The Chemistry Store. BB also carries it.
