Lumina
I live in FL most of the year and Summer is really hard on my soy candles. I use 464. I am thinking of adding some palm wax to make them a bit harder. Has anyone tried this? I just wondered what a good starting percentage is. I know there will be lots of testing, but hoped someone could point me in the right direction. I already make palm wax pillars and use glass glow for containers. I really almost consider switching to all palm, but of course at the Farmers Markets everyone wants soy candles. Thanks for any help you can give me. Candybee
Since you are adding palm to soy and not the other way around I assume you are not interested in crystal patterns but simply 'hardening' your candles? You can add in any amount really but I find it best to start in increments of 5% and keep adjusting until I am happy with what I have. I would think that somewhere between 5-25% palm may be what might work for you. I would look for a container palm like crystal container or glass glow instead of any pillar palm. The reason is even small amounts of pillar palm added to soy may make the candle pull away from the sides ending up with a candle that 'rattles' in the jar. Ask me how I know this. LOL You can also try 1-5% beeswax to achieve a harder candle. Just use beeswax sparingly as it can make the candles crack if you use too much.
TallTayl
I didn't love Palm with soy. Mine looked odd and burned not so great. How about adding Pillar blend? I have decent luck with that.
moonshine
Palm stearic acid or beeswax works great in 464 to harden it up - the beeswax I believe I used 2% and the Palm stearic I used 1T per pound
Lumina
Thank you all so much. I have 15lbs of bees wax so will try that first. Do you think it will effect the burn? or I guess the wick size? I would think in that small amount it wouldn't but will be texting it this week. Thank you all for your helpCindy
moonshine
For me it did not because at the time when I was using 464 I used ECO wicks and they were all burning too hot or not hot enough and that's what made me try the beeswax and Palm stearic- it made them burn better for meIf yours are burning perfect right now you may have to go up- I would make a tester using your normal wick and 1 size up and see what they do
Lumina
I am using ECO wicks, so will try both and see what happens. Thank you all so much for your help Cindy

I filled my presto pot full of soy and added 6 TBS of palm. the candles look really strange and I have to hit them with the heat gun to have smooth tops... too much palm?? Lumina
Going out to try some bees wax in the 464 to see what it looks like. The weather is hot here in FL already ... 90 this past Sunday... the candles are not happy. Me either, but I have fans... Cindy
Linda99
How did you go with this .. I am having problems with Australian summer heat and posting my candles .. I use 464 soy wax ...
TallTayl
Any additives will drastically change the candle. 464 is just a tough one to work with under extreme conditions. I’d swap to a wax better built to work in your conditions, like c3, C1, or swap out of soy altogether into plain old palm waxes.
TallTayl
I’ve been playing with adding palm waxes to naked soy and confirmed that temps are super important. Palm waxes need to be heated to over 200*F. The soy/palm blend worked much better when heated to 200-210, then cooled to 105 ish before pouring into jars. I treated it a lot like C1. soys with adds already in the blend are trickier to work with. 464 seems like kind of a “loose” soy in that it is susceptible to heat issues. you might be better off using 444 versus 464, though all the GB soy are subject to wide swings in quality from lot to lot. C1 and c3 were always more consistent when I was a soy girl. I never worried about swings in temps with either c1 or C3. The candles I sold at the ren Faire sat through 9 weeks of days that reached 110*F with no sweat at all.
