Premier wicks 700

Recommended Posts

Hi folks

I'm testing premier wicks 793 in 3 inch tumblers. Does anyone else find that the flame is quite large and they flicker quite a bit?

The scent throw is great but the above is troubling me. I'm using 8% f/o. Would you recommend I test 790? Just don't want to loose the scent throw.

Thanks!

I'm fairly new to candlemaking and have no experience working with tumblers only tin containers and 464 wax so far. I'm currently using premier 767 and 790. To me it sounds like you need to wick down. The only time the flame on either premier wick starts flickering is if there's a draft in the room otherwise it's great. Also, the only time I noticed the flame was really big was when I had a Pre 790 wick in my 4oz container but am now using an ECO 4 wick and getting great results so far in my 4oz. Hope this helps

But I second with Candybee.  down to Old Glory on premier wicks haha. She knows her stuff

Hi, yes I use Premier wicks too. And yes I think you are overwicked.

Maybe I overlooked it, but are you using dyes in your wax? That will make a difference.

I would start testing in the 780 +/- range.

In my 464 3" diameter tins, heavy dye, 6% FO I use either a 785 or a 790.

I think Aztec sells a variety pack and they will ship them for under $6. BUT!! They are having a one day sale on FOs this week so you might want to add some FOs to your wick order. Just sayin....

Hi Old Glory - thanks for your response.

I don't use any dyes just f/o.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try wicking down. I'm really happy with the scent throw but not the flickering/high flame.

I live in the UK so normally wait until i have to order a batch but did get my last lot of wicks from Aztec. Thanks for the tip on the sale... Worth knowing!

Some enterprising person over there needs to become a distributor of candle and soap making supplies. I hate that it's so hard for those in the UK to get product.

I honestly think you need the 785, but we use different waxes, so be prepared to go up one size or down one size. I have no experience with C3.

And, umm, they won't ship to the UK for $6 lol. My bad.

It's really frustrating. I've tried quite a few of the wicks that you can get over here but I do love the way the premiers perform. I just have to order in bulk.

Do you get a good scent throw when you use yours? And not a flickering/large flame?

Thanks for the advice... I feel like I'm back on track now.

Go to the Old Style Candle Gallery and look back in Sept '14 for a post "8 oz tins with Premier wicks". It shows a tin with a 790 Premier wick at 1 hr, 2 hrs, and 3 hrs (actually 3.5). To me, it has a nearly perfect burn, and awesome throw.

Throw does have a lot to do with your fragrance oils.

I had a look and your candle looks great @oldglory. Lovely neat flame too. Great to hear that your throw is good too.

I've been using oils from Natures Garden at 8% and the throw is great which I'm pleased about. I just need to rectify the flickering/tall flame by wicking down.

Premier wicks tend to burn down then out with C3, hence the tall, flickering flame. If you have both the 785 and 790, do a side by side test using the same fo at the same amount and see which one you like best and go from there. I've worked with 464 also and there are differences in the way the two waxes behave and burn... you'll need to test to see what works for you.
