Wheel Thrown Pottery

I have wanted to try pottery for as long as i can remember. Finally signed up for an 8 week session at a nearby gallery and got my hands dirty. Today was my second time at the wheel, and i think i really like it. The instructor basically sat on the sidelines and let me play with cylinders until i got bored. I had no idea what i was going to make, just grabbed a blob of clay and let it take some sort of shape.

The two on the left were from the first class. Wobbles and all I just love them.

In a pic i can really see all my mistakes from the group today, and where i learned something useful a little too late (like wheel trimming excess clay at the foot before removing from the wheel) but tomorrow is another day. My family is already afraid of gift holidays, wondering if i will load them up with stuff they will need to display, lol.

Ohhhh fun!~!!!

They look great for only a 2nd try and you can barely notice any flaws. I wouldn't have if you wouldn't have mentioned them, so pfffttt... LOL

My mom did ceramics forever and for as long as I can remember until a few years ago.

I always wanted to learn to "throw pot" but just never got around too it, and then my mom sold all of her stuff without even asking if I wanted any of it. :(

Those look really nice. Looks like you are really having some fun!

I took pottery in high school and absolutely loved it! I still have an ugly pitcher I made. LOL But I love it anyway cause I made it myself! If my house was burning I would run in to save that stupid pitcher!

Lol Vicky, I will absolutely positively post more when i get to make more. Looks like Tuesdays and Saturdays are all i can squeeze in to get to the gallery. So, come Saturday, weather permitting, and with the clay luck on my side, i may get to do more.

Teach said something about learning trimming next time. Sounds really boring :D

Looking forward to bowls so i can see about shaving bowls!! I have 4 feet of shelf space and plan to fill the whole thing totally up.

LOL

Yes, trimming is tedious at best.  But it allows you to give a nice shape and foot to your bowls so the bottoms aren't so clunky.  You will learn in time how to throw so your bottoms aren't heavy and trimming is just simple and quick to shape the bottom and the foot only.

....it takes practice and time, just like everything else!!  :)

Only a couple pieces made it into the kiln for glaze firing before i made it to class this week. Not a great camera pic. I'll take a few real ones with the good camera some time later today. Just got so excited about how the colors turned out. You never know what you're gonna get.

Worked on pitchers as the class lesson.

I have wanted to try pottery for, well since i was younger than my daughter. I dreamed of having a wheel and kiln so i could surround myself with gorgeous earthenware. Then reality struck. It is frustrating! And every step of the process has something that can go wrong ruin the work. Those two little vases survived by sheer luck I think :D

During the first 8 week session i learned a lot about myself. I kept making the same mistakes over and over. Got frustrated. Over thought. Wondered what i was doing there where all those other women made such beautiful pieces effortlessly.

Took 2 weeks off because of how the class was structured (throw as much as you can for 6 weeks. Trim for week 7. glaze week 8) sat at the wheel fresh this week and realized i was holding my hands slightly askew. A tiny 1/4 inch difference between my fingertip placement was making it really hard to pull walls! Adjusted that and all of a sudden the walls pulled the way they should.

So long story longer I am looking at wheels again. And looking at hand building pieces until then. Pinterest and Youtube are dangerous places for me!

If you have a studio near by that offers classes i whole heartedly encourage you to try. At least try once.

VERY nice!!  I love the red and black piece.  Keep practicing!!

If you are going to hit youtube....Simon Leach's videos are great.  He is a master teacher.....and I love the accent.  :)

...I had my studio time today, had some stiff black clay to use up by rolling slabs, so I made more soap dishes.

Not a bad haul for the second session. A few more pieces have yet to hit the glaze kiln, but this is a happy collection for March and April!

Soap Dish Concept. All wheel thrown. One i was testing a little pour or drain spout.

Candle stick holders. Next sets will have cute handles. Another size for mini tapers is on the drying shelf now. These can also hold incense cones and smudge.

This was a fun hand built plate. I rolled the clay, used texture plates and formed the ruffled edge. I intended this to use for incense cones, smudge or similar. Though, i love the way the glaze played in the texture so much i may use it for something else altogether. Since the idea worked, i will be adding little holders for mini tapers and different designs for Faire.

Some pendants are being fired now, along with a couple other fun things I hope work out.
