Jcandleattic
So, now that Christmas is over it's time to start focusing on Valentines day and spring type soaps. I can't do much today, but I'm going to start soaping (or get ready to start) tomorrow and have a couple ideas for my Valentine's Day soaps. Instead of trying to figure out how to do a dress for the "her's" portion of my his and her's soaps, I will just make a pink tuxedo soap to go with my black one. (Not sure why I never thought of that, but my friend was so impressed with my tuxedo soap that she did a pair like that and they were just the CUTEST - so I'm gonna do that too) Also, since I have both rose embed molds and heart embed molds I'm going to do something with hearts and roses for a V-day soap. As for spring - sigh - I have no clue... What is your motivation, and what will you all be making for the upcoming V-day and spring season?
moonshine
I am not a soaper at all....but I like in the spring to see lavenders with lavender budsA good rose with rose petals Lemongrass with lemon rinds and any herbals with real herbs in them- I love that type of stuff
Candybee
I am having the same problem. I just don't feel motivated. I also have a dr. appt tomorrow and I just don't feel like doing anything today or the next day. Another problem is I don't have any supplies to really make the soaps I need to make. I won't have the money until the spring craft season starts and I can start earning the money I need to buy supplies. That just seems like such a far way off. Sigh.
HorseScentS
Candybee, you can raise funds for supplies on a crowd-funding website that leans towards small businesses. Google for the best crowd-funding site. If you set up a page requesting funds, let us know so whoever wants to can kick in a dollar or two for your business. Scented
I have a jasmine and orange blossom I want to combine and see how it stands alone w/o some frank & myrrh underneath it. Violet and it with some combinations that I haven't thought of yet are on the back burner. ALL of this is really on the back burner since I need to overload us in lilac soap or I'm fired lol!
Jcandleattic
I should probably do some florals, but most of the time they make me sick, and/or give me migraines, so I try to avoid them - not all, there are a few I can tolerate, but mostly not, so I don't have a lot of them in my line-up.
Scented
Ginger LimeWhite Tea & GingerMisbehavin' (if you have it from NG, slight discolor though, but not if you use TD)Macapuno Sorbet (will discolor, but TD takes care of it ... it's an old Southern Soaper FO that may still be around) Margarita Fruit Slices Let's see, what else is minus floral lol ...
Candybee
I love florals so I have no problem with them. Scented your jasmine and orange blossom combo sounds divine! I also use ginger lime and its one of my best sellers.
Guest OldGlory
I love the Ginger Lime at BCN for soap, and the Lemon Pucker (sparingly added poppyseeds to this one). You gals are making me want to start making soap again! Who do you all buy soap supplies from?Btw, I heard that olive oil is going to jump in price in 2015. Scented
Well I will have to stock on Olive oil then, because it's a big factor in my recipe. I like it better than splitting it with RBO. CB I'll have to let you know. I'll probably start with a 1:1 and see what I think. Another fun one to soap would be the supernova out of FB. Alien out of NG isn't too bad, but I can't compare it against the original. OH!! Here you go, Sun Moon & Stars out of NG. It will discolor slightly (enough to turn a bright yellow into a dullish yellow) I'd actually love to try a lavender rose combo from another poster's hunt on here. I think it was Amber. Since spring tends to bring on allergies for some, basil, sage and mint out of NG or BCN ought to do well. Not making claims, but it does tend to alleviate headaches. OG the bulk of my oils come from soapers choice Edited December 31, 2014 by Scented
Candybee
I buy most of my bulk oils from Soapers Choice too! But I also shop a lot at Soap Making Resource and Essential Depot. Depends on what and how much I need. For example, lye I get from ED and if I need a small amount of something I will add that to my cart. I like a lot of stuff from SMR and have a couple of their wood molds. I love their EOs a lot too and they always send certification papers with them. Now when it comes to FOs for my CP I am all over the place but try to shop at suppliers that test and review in CP soap. I use Lemon Verbena from AH/RE. Its really strong and lemony. I actually use it year round. Another great citrus combo is grapefruit and lemongrass using EOs. I throw in a little litsea cubeba to anchor it. I have to say I found that using a quality red rose FO and adding a bit of geranium EO to it makes an awesome rose scented soap. I never in a million years would have believed a rose scented soap would sell like hot potatoes but the ladies drool over it, especially the older ones with the deep pockets so it always sells out quickly. Since MW gypsy rose is no longer available I am going to test Sensuous Black Rose and Peaks Rose Bouquet. Hopefully one will work as nice as MW's did and not A&D on me. Also I want to try a rosemilk this year as supposedly its on Lebermuth's list of 'trendy' scents for the coming year. I want to try the one from Soapalooza. Re olive oil, I found a good one for CP soap at Wally's. Its the Capatriti brand. Its about $18 for a can of 128oz. Its a light golden color and soaps beautifully. I like it more than Wally's store brand. The can is mostly white in color with an olive and black label if you look for it.
Scented
Peak's Rose Bouquet soaps like a dream, but if you discount water you will have to move a little.
Candybee
I love Peaks rose bouquet but have only used it in candles. Glad to hear it soaps well. I will be doing a color swirl so its good to know that I should not water discount. Have you tried Sensuous Black rose? I think its from AH or Elements? I hear its the same as MW's Gypsy so thats why I wanted to give it a test run.
Scented
I have it, but haven't done anything with it. I think I still have some gr too. WIll have to search for those and just see.
Candybee
So who has the best ginger lime for CP? I've been using Elements GL and it rocks. But the only other I've tried was the one from Soapalooza. It didn't stick and was weak to begin with.
soap_nut
I just bought some base oils from soaper's choice and I am soooo happy! A lot cheaper than other vendors I have ordered from and I like how they package everything. I also got some new EOs from Soap Making Resource. Working on a lavender oatmeal soap today, lemon w/lemongrass and a eucalyptus/tea tree acne bar. Excited to get back at it but my funds are low like many others so I'm limited. MIght have to try out the crowd-funding resources! I'm not sure if it's just that I haven't bought for awhile or if shipping has really gone up but I usually buy lye from Essential Depot and the shipping is almost as much as the lye but it still seems cheaper than my other resources. Yikes.
Candybee
Shipping has gone way up so high its like an arrow hits you when your order now. Also, ED's lye prices increased a few months back. They are still good prices for lye. But I find ordering in bulk is essential to help keep shipping down so the more lye you order from them the price really comes down a lot. I like the packaging from Soapers Choice too and their prices plus they have this chart you can use to determine what your shipping will be before you buy. I have a lot of EOs from SMR. Most of mine came from there and I have been pleased with them so far. But I am still a novice EO mixer so I still order in smaller amounts like mostly 2 & 4 ozers except for lime I order in a larger size cause I use a lot of lime EO. When I get to the point I need to order in bulk I will shop around more.
Jcandleattic
I love Peak's Rose Bouquet - but tried it years ago, and it moved so quick I've been afraid to try it again. I soap at a 33% so it would probably move a bit fast for me, but that might actually bode well for a particular soap I have in mind. A ginger lime soap sounds good, and the NG scents that have been recommended sound good and I have to put in an order from them sometime soon as well. I do have misbehavin' and have soaped it. I love that scent, and love it in soap. I should make another one. Thanks for all of the suggestions.
Scented
CB the GL I use is from Elements too lol!
iansmommaya
Hi everyone, Hi JC! for v day I have a few ideas, one is frank, myrrh, vanilla and rose. Another is ginger and lime (great minds, right?), Today I am working on shampoo bars and aromatherapy mists so that is whats on my mind. I might to a sage and lemongrass or sage and something in a CP too.
Candybee
I know I will be making my rose soaps for spring and valentine's day. I've made chocolate soap before but it just doesn't sell. Too bad because washing with a chocolate scented soap is so decadent and lovely. I still have a lb of Fillmore's Cocoa Therapy and it rocks in M&P. Will have to give it a try in CP. I meant to combine it with Peaks Pure Peppermint and color it with pink and cocoa swirls but haven't gotten around to it. How about a mint soap for spring? Spearmint or peppermint? I like to blend my mints. One of my best sellers is a lavender, rosemary, spearmint, and peppermint combo. I use EOs listed in the order I posted at: 4:2:1:1. this keeps the rosemary tame but still allows the lavender to come out, while the lesser mint amount is still strong enough to come through. Once I came up with this combo I stuck with it because men, women, and kids love it. I color it lavender and mint green and do a swirl. Jcandleattic
Hi Maya!! I was thinking a lemongrass mix too. Maybe a lemongrass with a bit of lavender. (again, lavender is one that gives me a headache so I'd have to not use too much of it) And CB - I love mixing too, and I do love mixing mint. I will definitely be remaking my Enchanted Mint mix again. It's a green apple with peppermint and a slight touch of orchard in it. OMG it smells so good. One of my better mixes if I do say so myself. LOL I will be doing a lot of mixing this spring. Trying to get rid of some of the scents I don't really like or that don't sell well, but I still have significant stock with. Mixing is a great way to get rid of "dud" scents, and create something new and fabulous. And it's fun.
Guest OldGlory
Does anyone use Pomace Olive Oil? I used it in all of my soaps and it's still pretty inexpensive at 7 lbs for $19 at Aztec.
Jcandleattic
I use whatever type you get at Sam's Club because my sister gives me her manager's discount and gets it for me. (I think I pay like $9 or $10 a gallon with her discount)
Candybee
OG - you can get the same amt of pomace at Soapers Choice for $17.01 or the pomace and rice bran oil combo for $14.58 I prefer to use the same OO I use for cooking so I get the regular for sauteeing and cooking. I get the best price from Wally's. A gallon can for under $18. JC - Re the Sams Club-- can you get the same discount with a regular membership or is that just for the employees?
