Wicking Question w- Photo

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have any suggestions - this candle has 6% FO - Peaks Botanical Orchard and Nectar, and no additives. Still I have the mushrooming going on. I am using a CD wick - and the throw is very light. (unsatisfactory throw in my eyes.) But what are your thoughts concerning the mushrooming?  The wax is a soy blend. I have been test burning in 4 hour increments. TIA!

Grani, is there any soot from the wick as it is burning? Have those candles been burning 4 hours? That's a pretty small mushroom if there's no soot and it's been burning 4 hours - I wouldn't worry about it. Just my opinion.

There was no soot - The throw is faint. I wasn't happy with the scent throw. The candles burned down from the top. The MP is actually about 1/4 inch - you can see it slightly if you look at the purple candle. The sides melted down on the one side that the flame leaned toward, but the other side melted down as the heat rose. - I am happy with the flame height.  The mushroom on this candle is small - I couldn't get a light enough picture on the purple candle, The mushroom is a fat little monster.

I get a bigger mushroom with my zinc wicks in 6006. If your customers will trim that wick every time them extinguish the candle they'll be fine. That's why I am experimenting with the Premiers.

I hate that when too when you have a jar that is wider at the top and gets so much smaller at the bottom.  Too me it looks slightly underwicked....but just slightly.  I'm betting that the next 4 hour burn you do on these jars, it's going to make it.  Going up 1 wick size will probably make that jar real hot the closer  you get to the bottom.  As Old Glory said, you might want to try another style wick.

What size wick is that anyway and what wax is it, I'm curious?

As far as a faint scent throw goes,  it just might be that fragrance is not a good thrower that's all.....and then maybe by changing the wicks you might get a throw...Just have to test.  How long did you let the candle cure b/4 you burned it?

The green candle in the picture if your referring to I say that is not a mushroom at all- but it does look to weak

Maybe go up one size and see if the throw improves....and like Trappeur said make sure it doesn't get to hot

I'm not familiar with that jar at all but if that was burning 4 hours it appears to me to be struggling a little

And if it's soy and your using a CD wick- try the next size up in a CDN and see how it does

Example: a lot of my fragrances a CD10 is to weak, leaves a lot of film on glass but a CD12 is way too hot so usually the CDN12 is the perfect match for that type of FO with my jars

So if you go up in CD and the glass does get to hot or you develop a big mushroom try that same size in a CDN

The wax is a 6006 blend and the wick is a CD12. The tops of the jars were not hot at all. I'm afraid to go up a wick size because sometimes the flame gets very high in just 3 hours and still the mp doesn't completely reach the sides of the jar. I don't have any CDN's right now. I do have premiers. I will try one candle with a premier wick and I will try one with a CD14 and see what happens.

These look really good! I used to use the 6006 and found it gave the same scent throw as other straight paraffin waxes so I don't think the wax is your issue. I was using Eco's with it.

Are these wicks trimmed through each burn? I think these are great, no problem with mushrooming that I can see. Though purple would tend to mushroom more than the lighter colours I would imagine.
