Is anyone up for a soap challenge?

This would be for anybody no matter your experience level. I would like to do a challenge that is fun, interesting, and educational.

This will be something you do on your own. We won't be exchanging soaps unless you want to send any out on your own. That would be up to you but is not expected of anyone. There will be a timeframe we work within once we decide what challenge to do.  I am thinking 2-4 weeks as this is a busy season so I want to be flexible. Once you finish the challenge you will post in the soap challenge thread. (I will start the challenge thread up once we agree on our challenge and time frame.) Your post in the challenge thread will be pic(s) of your soap so everyone can see and feel free to post about your experience and the results of your soap.

Sound good? Are you up for a soap challenge? If so post in this thread.

Here are some ideas I came up with. If you have any ideas please add them to the list and also if you intend to join the challenge. Thank you.

Here are some challenge ideas. This can be CP or HP. If we decide on a challenge that M&P is doable you can do M&P or a combo. Please feel free to add any to the list if you have some ideas:

1. Make a soap using only one oil. I have seen this done on other forums but wanted to try it here. We can each do a seperate oil or all do the same one. But I think it would be more educational if we each picked a different oil. Then we can report back how the soap turned out.

2. Make a holiday inspired soap. I think Christmas is far enough away we have time to make a Christmas Themed soap. It can be the color, the scent, shape, embellishments, etc. Anything goes as long as its Chrismasy!

3. Try out a new swirling technique you never tried before. I am open to suggestions but it needs to be something any experience level can manage. Even if you have done it before but want to practice some more that would be okay too.

4. Create a new recipe and share it. For this you must create and use a recipe you have never tried before. This may be challenging to a new soaper but its not really that hard and it can be fun. The recipe can be for any kind of soap you want to create.

5. Make a spa inspired salt bar. You can use any salt bar recipe for this. You just need to incorporate ingredients into the recipe that you might find at a spa. It could be herbs, or specialty sea salts, sea mud, cleansing clays, kelp, and topped off with a spa type scent, either FO or EO or blend.

6. Make a children's soap that floats. This will be a whipped soap challenge so you can use any recipe. The challenge is to whip it so that it becomes a soap that floats in the bath. Give it a children's playful theme with scent, color, embed, or other playful idea you want to incorporate. Rubber duckies are welcome!

I would love to participate in a soap challenge. Being a beginner soaper, it would definitely be challenging to participate and sounds line a lot of fun. Before I totally commit though, I would like to know the challenge that is decided on. My suggestion/vote would go to doing the holiday inspired challenge.

Some other ideas/suggestions are (but not limited too)

Color theme (I've done a few like this - it could also fall in the color theme I guess - I've tried copying the colors in my Avi before - it was interesting)

Scent theme

*(or a color & scent theme combined)

A scent blend you created yourself

Trying to copy a picture theme - I've seen a woman recreate a moon rise over the mountains - it was awesome!

etc.,

I like your ideas. I was thinking of a color theme too. I remember when you did one of those and thought that was a cool idea.

I am also thinking of instead of making this a time frame challenge to leave it open without any time limits. I could start a challenge thread and sticky it then anyone can take on the challenge when they want. Maybe I will do that for the single oil challenge but not for say a color theme or holiday theme challenge. Haven't decided yet.

I like the idea of leaving it open! I work better when I'm not under pressure or a deadline. Well, I'm more creative let's say.

At work, I thrive on deadlines, but in my crafting business I like doing what I want, not what I have too. LOL

I feel the same. Plus life gets in the way at home. That's why I was thinking of an open challenge. That would work with all of them except for the Christmas. Anyway, I am still thinking on this as I don't want to sticky a bunch of challenges.

Maybe do a quarterly challenge and have the sticky up for 4 months then take it down?

Or even monthly?

OR bi-monthly - that way there are only 6 stickies at any given time and once they've been up for a year (or less) take them down?

IDK - just brainstorming here. Feel free to tell me to shut my trap! LOL

No go ahead. I am liking your ideas. I think we start out with one challenge and see how it goes. I am still flip flopping on the time thing.

So far we have a vote for a Christmas Theme.

And a vote for 2,3,5&6

I am partial to the Christmas one too.

I don't think a lot of people post here so I don't expect a ton of participation. But for those of us who do this I think it will be fun to share our work. So I will wait a bit to see if anyone else wants to put in a vote.

Give me another year, then I'd like to try :) but I agree with Jcandle attic, I like to craft soaps or candles not under a deadline, its more enjoyable that way, if there's a deadline, then it becomes more like a chore to be done----good luck with your soap challenge :)

this would be fun.  I've seen video's on YouTube for challenges but have never participated in one.

Hi Terri! Welcome to Craft Server! If you like to make soap it would be fun to be a part of the challenge. Which soap challenge do you like?

Isn't there a Pottstown in PA? Are you from PA? I'm in Virginia.

I'm thinking of putting up a long term and a short term challenge. So one will be indefinite and you can take it on anytime you want. The other would be time restrictive say several weeks or months. Will decide by the end of the week.

But right now I am thinking single oil soap for the long term and the Christmas theme soap for the short term. Let me know what you think.
