Peaks cotton core or RRD wicks

Recommended Posts

I use a 70/30 (soy/paraffin blend) and also a 30/70 blend (paraffin/soy). I have both cotton core wicks from Peak and RRD wicks. I use a 3 1/4 inch diameter glass straight sided container. (Libbey 11oz thick bottom rocks glass),  I have 9% fo, of Southwest leather and I am considering going down to 6%. Right now I am burning a candle made from the higher paraffin one and notice with a C80 there is some smoking and a decent amount of flickering,  but I am achieving a FMP (though it has taken many over 7 hours to get it). I am wondering what the difference between the Cotton Core  (C80) and RRD wicks since I read that RRD also have a cotton core.  Does one burn hotter than the other?  I love this fragrance and it smells strong when I am stirring it in the wax, but I am having a very hard time getting it to throw well. Southwest says it is one of its strongest scents. So in that case, it is probably me not doing the proper wick. I have tried CD wicks and CD18 is pretty good, I just get way to much hangup and it will get a FMP on the last 1/4 of the glass. I have tried LX and zinc, with this fragrance. I noticed that 2 of my strongest candles both have a cotton core wick, but it has taken a long time to get a FMP. So Ive ordered some RRDs and I will see how it goes. Does anyone know the difference between these 2 wicks (cotton core and RRD)

First off, your FMP should occur in a half hour.  Your max burn for custometers should be 4 hours (yes, do test to 8 or more, but recommend 4 for the customers).  If it takes 7 hours to get FMP, then you are underwicked.

As for sooting, often that is an overwick problem (which you apparently don't have).  So my next thought is that at 9 percent you have overrun your wax capability.  Most IGI waxes can take that.  If you are not using a good IGI wax, consider a suppliment.  There are additives that can maybe help your wax to hold your FO load.  I have gone to 18 percent with some waxes.  Don't recommend it.  But it is doable.

The RRD is a directional wick.  Are the ones you bought built for the right direction?

I can't say much about the cotton core because I use those in paraffin, not blends. Soy has its own personality.

I have had great luck with HTP wicks and ECO wicks for reducing sooting when boosting the FO content in any wax concoction that I came up with (except palm, palm likes square or braid wicks).

HTP and ECO are my fallback wicks.  No matter what I do, no matter what the experiment, I seem to go to the HTP or ECO for a reference burn and ultimately end up choosing one of the two for the final.  There are over 500 wicks on the market and I have about 300 of them.  I like playing with wicks.  I keep coming back to these two.

You can go through a lot of wicks before settle on the standard fall back wick for me it HTP and Peak cotton core for soy or soy blends. Paraffin my fall back wicks are Flat braid wick and LX. Beeswax is square braid tried a few others come back to that. Palm I was all over the place never did settle on one type of wick but I never added palm as a part of my regular line up..

I tried the LX a lot but they sooted on me.  I bought a pillar from Rustic Candles in Tucson which is famous.  Was an LX wick from what I could gleen and observe. It sooted.

I know folks like LX.  I am guessing that with the right mix and average or low FO content, the LX would work fine.

There is a reason why there are so many wicks.  :)  Happy testing!

did someone say a FMP in half hour???

I hope you mean a triple wicked jar or something.

Any candle I've ever seen get a MP that quickly was way over wicked and got huge and way too hot.

So I am little curious on this myself. Id love a wick that somehow gets super quick FMP and then is horrible the rest of the way.

I agree 7 hours is too long but 3 or 4 hours for a full MP is totally normal (especially first few burns). Its obviously sooner haf way down the jar.

You were'nt talking about tealights were you? Lol

Seems like I am seeing this all over lately.  Or maybe I've just started paying attention.  I dunno.  It rattles my nerves.  Is this FMP business some kind of right of passage?

Where does this come from?  The candles I buy in stores don't reach a FMP in the first burn.  Well, those hot as hades (I won't mention a brand but I have one in mind) 3 wick jobs do, but most don't.  Who came up with this craziness?

Fifteen times a day somewhere on the internet someone will post a pic of a great burning candle asking "how does this look?" I'll look at it and say "looks good so far, burn it til the end..." and 29 other people will come behind me screaming "you need to wick up...you should have a full melt pool in 16.8 seconds," or some such BS as that.  All the time I'm thinking " somewhere there's a house burning....."

P.S.  I'm aware that the original post is old, but dang.  My patience is thin tonight.
