Soap and oils and lye, oh my!!
I thought this might be a good idea, being that alot of supplier sites don't offer soaping notes on their FO. I have been doing alot of research but would like to get the groups input on this. Perhaps we could copy and paste this list to keep it current. I am trying to decide what scents I will offer.
Any suggestions or input are welcome. :highfive:
Scents that Rock in CP Soap:
Purely Herbal- BCN
Green Clover and Aloe- Peaks
I've seen a flurry of new soapers in this topic lately.
Welcome to your newest addiction. I am thinking perhaps some of the seasoned soapers could help and add helpful tips, tricks and links to make it much easier to find information. Much of this all is already on this board.
Feel free to contribute~ ladies and gentlemen. :highfive:
First off, I'll add mine.
Everything I've ever learned from making soap was done by online research, books, trial and error and getting invaluable...
Notes from archive on abbreviations:
A - Acceleration
CP - Cold Process, Cold Processed. Soapmaking method where the soap mixture is mixed and poured at room temperature (more or less).
CPHP - Crock Pot Hot Soap. Soapmaking method where the soap mixture is cooked in a crock pot.
CPOP - Cold Process, Oven Process. Soapmaking method where the soap mixture is poured into moulds, which are then placed into the oven and "baked" at very low temperature.
Does anybody have one of these things for soapmaking? Is it for real?
I've worked with wax for years but now I'd like to try my hand at soap making with a decent, all inclusive starter kit (if there is such a thing). Any recommendations??
In December I ordered some deodorized cocoa butter from Columbus Foods/soapers choice. I have been buying from them for two years and I've never had any problems at all and love their prices. Anyway, I was in the middle of making some soap and when I opened my new box I noticed it was more yellow and was not deodorized. I sent them photos showing the difference and telling them about it having the cocoa scent. I didn't hear back from them so I finally called because I had to...
Finally got around to CP'ing this over the weekend. OMG it is super strong and so far the best Lemon Verbena I have soaped to date. No A&D. Was easy to work with and had time to make a lovely swirl.
I have to get batteries for my camera after work so I will try and post pics later.
So far I am impressed. Been searching for a strong LV for almost 2 yrs and this is about the 3rd or 4th one I have tried. It got good reviews so I thought I would try it. Glad I did. Now all I have to do is...
Rest in peace, my little 1lb bottle of Black Coconut FO, that has now leaked all over my soaping room because the glass bottle cracked yesterday and I didn't notice until this morning.
Yup, a full 1lb bottle of fo just leaked out all over my fo cabinet and my counter top....
On the plus side - my soap room smells very summery now. :tongue2:
Hi. I am new to this forum but I already find it awesome. I am on a VERY fixed income and I have to really stretch my pennies when buying anything. May I ask if any of you know the cheapest website online that I should go to buy some sodium lactate, benzoin powder, stearic acid, and sodium hydroxide? I have everything to make soap except those things. I live in a very small town and no stores carry it. I've called every town around here looking for it also. A one stop shop would be nice if...
What's the secret to a slow moving recipe for adequate swirling time? Lately, it seems like all my formulas move really fast and there isn't time to do fancy swirling. The milk formulas are the worst but it seems like my stick blender is too powerful? Does that make sense? I use silk in my lye solution and soap at 80 degrees with a 2:1 water ratio but a couple of turns with the sb and wham I got soap! Quiet Girl's formula is the slowest moving one I use but there are a couple of others that I...
I'm confused. Are your superfats separately measured oils or do they come out of your total oils that you will be measuring to be melted that you add the lye water to? Like if it says coconut oil 20% in your total oils, do you measure out the amount it gives for that % and take out the amount you will be superfatting with? ?
I made up two 3 pound batch recipes and inputted my ingredients into soapcalc. I measured out all the ingredients and melted the oils for the 2 different recipes I was making. After I did that, I remembered that somewhere along the lines of learning about making soap I read that you are only supposed to use 2% castor oil in your recipes because it would cause it to set up too fast or something. I used 10 % castor in one and the other one I used 16% in the other! Now I can't remove all that...
I'm looking to purchase about 6 or 12 salt bars, non scented, for my personal use (I swear!). I don't make them but do love using them. If you make non M&P salt bars, IM me and let me know how much you'd charge for 6 bars and 12 bars, I would love you for it and so would my skin.
I finally bit the bullet and made my first batch of CP soap on Sunday. :yay: How long should it stay in the mold and when should I cut it? I've been told after it comes out of the mold to wait another couple of days before cutting, but from what I've read, it looks like I could do it right away. Now I'm confused.
I asked this in the candle making forum but they don't really use crock pots so I figured I needed to ask here. Did or do you notice a big increase in your bill when you make a lot of soap in month?
I've made my first two batches of soap and have had some issues with the soap not lasting very long in the shower. One bar only lasted 6 days. The bars were only about 3/4" but I would have anticipated them to last longer. I have used a simple coconut oil/olive oil recipe with castor oil that I found in my Everything Soapmaking Book. Is there something I can add to the soap so that it doesn't melt so fast or have I done something wrong in my process?
I am thinking of buying the red silicone soap mold from essential depot. Has anyone used these and are they easy to get the soap out? They are the loaf molds. TIA
I got some of this for Christmas and I love it!!!!!! I am a candle maker however I really want to try my hand at making something like this, even if its just for my own use. Where should I start. Not wanting a bar of soap but liquid with the olive oil.
OK so I'm trying out some raw yellow African Shea butter and I've searched the net to see if it can be yellow or should it be ivory. Throughout my search some say true raw Shea butter should only be ivory in color while some say it can be yellow depending on the actual tree it comes from. Some say the "yellow African Shea butter" is actually a butter from Africa that is similar to Shea butter but is not Shea butter and the tree that produces it grow in a cooler climate than the Shea butter...
Anyone up for a New Year's soap making tradition?
I was reading about it on another forum and decided to do it myself. Usually I make bastile soaps instead of a true castile but thought this was a cool way to start a tradition and make a castile that will be ready next New Year's day. Mine is 100% olive oil and I only put in lavender EO because I wanted a lavender scented soap.
If you plan on making your New Year's castile or already made one feel free to share your experience!
I'm new to CP soap making and decided to use Phenolphthalein to test my soap. I had referenced a soapmaking book and it said to put a drop or two on the soap to test and online there were other suggestions of dissolving the soap in distilled water first or dissolving in 50/50 distilled water/alcohol. I tested 3 batches--1 that has been curing for 5 weeks, 1 that has been curing for 4 weeks and 1 that has been curing for about 2.5 weeks. When I put the phenolphthalein on the soap I got a clear...
