Soap and oils and lye, oh my!!
I thought this might be a good idea, being that alot of supplier sites don't offer soaping notes on their FO. I have been doing alot of research but would like to get the groups input on this. Perhaps we could copy and paste this list to keep it current. I am trying to decide what scents I will offer.
Any suggestions or input are welcome. :highfive:
Scents that Rock in CP Soap:
Purely Herbal- BCN
Green Clover and Aloe- Peaks
I've seen a flurry of new soapers in this topic lately.
Welcome to your newest addiction. I am thinking perhaps some of the seasoned soapers could help and add helpful tips, tricks and links to make it much easier to find information. Much of this all is already on this board.
Feel free to contribute~ ladies and gentlemen. :highfive:
First off, I'll add mine.
Everything I've ever learned from making soap was done by online research, books, trial and error and getting invaluable...
Here's a direct link to the B&B section on the arcived forum: link
Notes from archive on abbreviations:
A - Acceleration
CP - Cold Process, Cold Processed. Soapmaking method where the soap mixture is mixed and poured at room temperature (more or less).
CPHP - Crock Pot Hot Soap. Soapmaking method where the soap mixture is cooked in a crock pot.
I'm getting ready to bite the bullet and try making my first batch of soap. Can I buy the olive oil from the grocery store, or is it better or any different from a supplier? Also, does anybody add titanium dioxide to their soap to try to keep it white before adding color?
I made this fo, in cp soap..in June..at first I was not so sure if i really liked it..
as I am not a big fan of florals..
But as it cured out..it became nice, soft, and a lovely smelling soap..
it has grew on me, more and more every time i use it..
the scent really sticks well..6 months later..
I only bought a sample..but this is one. I will be buying in a larger amount next time..
Just thought I would pass this info on..
No A or D…i did soap with full water..and used only a hand whisk...
Finally got around to CP'ing this over the weekend. OMG it is super strong and so far the best Lemon Verbena I have soaped to date. No A&D. Was easy to work with and had time to make a lovely swirl.
I have to get batteries for my camera after work so I will try and post pics later.
So far I am impressed. Been searching for a strong LV for almost 2 yrs and this is about the 3rd or 4th one I have tried. It got good reviews so I thought I would try it. Glad I did. Now all I have to do is...
I started using TD in my soaps for a whiter soap or just a more opaque color. I have since noticed that it is also working pretty good as a stabalizer against FOs that discolor.
Case in point, I recently made a soap using French Vanilla FO I know turns my soap dark brown. This time I used 1 tbs TD for a 6 lb batch. I also used a 50/50 blend with the Vanilla and another scent. My soap is a light to medium tan and so far has not turned dark.
The vanilla isn't the only FO I have used it on...
I hope this picture posted. I got into the Management Attachments area, but don't know if I did the right thing to get into this post.
My question is does anybody know what type of paper this soap is wrapped in? I really would like to get some.
Ok, I have never had this happen before. I was wondering (did a search and couldn't find answers) if maybe the lye was old and didn't saponify the oil completely? It seemed a little weird even at first when I added the lye (had to chisel it out of the can) to the frozen goats milk. The lye/milk mixture turned really thick... like it was ready to mild. Then when I added it to my oils it traced very quickly but I was using a new fragrance (honeysuckle) so thought that was why. Then within hours...
I was wanting to order the vanilla stabilizer from RE but it says for MP soap and BCN says for both cp and mp. Is there really a difference? RE shipping is cheaper to me so I figured I would ask here before I order. If there is no difference then I'll order from RE.
I am trying to find great smelling versions of both Monkey Farts and Butt Naked that do not discolor terribly. Any help with where I might be able to find these would be greatly appreciated. Also, any suggestions for coloring options for these would be super. thanks
I'm new to CP soap making and decided to use Phenolphthalein to test my soap. I had referenced a soapmaking book and it said to put a drop or two on the soap to test and online there were other suggestions of dissolving the soap in distilled water first or dissolving in 50/50 distilled water/alcohol. I tested 3 batches--1 that has been curing for 5 weeks, 1 that has been curing for 4 weeks and 1 that has been curing for about 2.5 weeks. When I put the phenolphthalein on the soap I got a clear...
So I am curious how many scents you carry in soaps? It seems I want to make EVERY scent I have in soap lol I am thinking 15 regular scents and 5 holiday scents. But to get my list down is the problem lol
looking for molds for CP. I really like the no liner ones to make it that much easier. I have my eye on a couple but thought i'd see what you guys have tried and like. :)
I am superfatting at 5% but I keep remembering back a couple years ago that it still dried out my skin a little bit. I have very sensitive/dry skin and it gets worse in the winter months here in PA. So now I am wondering if I super fat at 7-8% if it'd be better for those with dry/sensitive skin. But a little worried about super fatting above the 5% So figured I'd see what everyone else super fats at and how many do more than the 5% and how they like it.
I see on reviews it likes to accelerate and rice. Has anyone Cp'd it successfully? I have only had one ever rice and accelerate on me and it ended up being Hp'd. But I have been reading to bring the oils and lye water down to like 85 degrees before combining. and adding the FO at a light trace. How (IF) do you CP it with no acceleration and ricing? This is hubbys cologne (well drakkar which I also have but also reviews say the same thing) So I really want to make it, I know ppl have been able...
I have a customer that has ezema...what is the best ingredient to use in making Bath Bombs for that condition? TIA!!
Someone was qurious how my soap turned out from this recipe:
70% Coconut Oil 76
30% Refined Shea Butter
20% Super Fat
I did CPHP w/ Sandalwood Vanilla FO. I really love how this turned out. Having used the soap after 48 hrs, my skin feels squeeky clean yet not dry. No aftershower film feeling. Lather is surprisingly creamy and wonderful. I just love it! I used the same body lotion I've been using afterwards but my skin feels so much smoother, soft and supple. I love taking pictures so...
Hi!!!! does anyone know where i can find molds or Metal or Plastic cupat, for soap making with patterns of Disney?.
Hi ladies. My husband is totally against me making CP soap. It's because of the lye. He thinks it's dangerous and that something bad will happen. I assure him that people make these soaps all the time and that as long as I follow precaution I will be okay.
I really really want to learn how to do CP soap. Like sooo soo bad! Right now I'm only doing M&P and I make candles etc.
How in the world do I convince him to let me learn CP?
I wanted to try this out, mixing the two in CP soap for a shaving soap recipe. I've read that it can help with lather. But mostly I am just curious.
I am not looking for a softer soap or trying to make liquid, just want to see if it helps with lather or makes a better shaving soap.
Anyone with experience on this I would appreciate your input. Or if someone could point me to some info I can research on how to do this and the benefits, pros, cons, etc. Thanks.
I am wanting to expand and add Sugar Scrubs and Body Butters, what is the best recipe for these 2 items? I enjoy reading everyones threads and replies on this site....I could sit here and read all day here... TIA!! :)
