Skill Level: Beginner-intermediate. Basic knowledge of and experience in cold-process soapmaking is assumed. Basic safety knowledge in handling lye and raw soap batter also assumed.
Date of Class: Sunday, January 6, 2008
Starting Time of Class: 2:00 C.S.T.
Approximate Time Needed to Finish Project: 1.5 - 2 hours
Supplies Needed: 128 g. sodium hydroxide, 12 oz. distilled water, 1 lb. olive oil, ½ lb. coconut oil, ½ lb. palm oil or lard, 2 TBL. granulated white table sugar, 1-2 oz. fo/eo of choice, liquid soap dye of choice (recommended) or powdered oxide/ultramarine of choice plus dab of glycerin.
Equipment Needed: Oven, oven timer, oven mitts, 2 lb. slab or log soap mold of choice (15x6x2” Rubbermaid drawer organizer is fine if you need a mold), oven-proof stainless or glass bowl (four quart capacity min.), stainless or wooden spoon, sturdy heat-resistant scraper-spatula, safety goggles, rubber gloves, scale, plastic lye pitcher, stick blender, fork, and small jewelry box (or similar sturdy square shape) plus waxed paper.
Pre-requests for class: We will be making a 2-lb. batch and using similar ingredients so that our batches finish up cooking at roughly the same time. Approx. 15-30 min. before class, please weigh out 12 oz. distilled water into your lye pitcher. Add 2 TBL. granulated white table sugar to this water and stir until sugar is thoroughly dissolved. Now put on goggles and weigh out 128 grams of sodium hydroxide and add to the water, stirring to dissolve, and holding your breath until you leave the room. (It is normal for the water to turn a light caramel color at this stage.) Set aside to cool slightly. Ideally, we want the lye water to be warm (but not blazing hot) when we start class. J

I really need to get through some beginner classes of soap making so I can do some of this more advanced stuff. Well maybe some day when I have some extra time.

I'm in on it too as long as I'm here :D If not, I'm coming back to make though. I want to use my new crock pot ... since I asked for it for Christmas just so I could learn to soap with it ... shhhhhhhh.

I want to try it but have only made one batch of CP (E's class). I don't have liquid soap dye or powdered oxide. Could I infuse some of the olive oil with ground parsley like we did for E's class?
Off to find something 15x6x2 and a 4 qt. bowel.

Ok. I bought all my supplies and my dog got into the panty and gobbled up the lard while we were gone. Now I have to go and buy more...:undecided I also had to stay up with him all night until it all came out. Yuck! Not a good situation.

He is feeling better. I had to give him a nice warm bath today. I bought 4 - 16 oz. of lard and he took a bite out of 3 of them. I am not sure why he got into the pantry but when we got home my female was barking her head off when I walked in the door and noticed all the lard cubes ripped open and little bites taken out of them. They both ran to the door to go outside. They must have know they were in trouble. I wasn't happy but at least the lard isn't expensive. It's funny now, but I just can't believe a dog would eat fat like that. Yuck!

One batch of CP is fine. I just meant that I'm not getting into the bare bones basics of soapmaking with this class. You should already be familiar with the basics of safely handling lye and raw soap batter, for example. I'm not going to go into detail covering that. :)
It's fine with me if you infuse! Have at it!

I think I might join this one too.....though with a crockpot instead of my oven.
Off to see if I have lard or palm!

You keep your lard in your panties?:laugh2::laugh2::laugh2::laugh2::laugh2:Wh at does keeping your lard in your panties before you soap it add to the soap's properties?
Sorry, could not resist:laugh2::laugh2::laugh2::laugh2::laugh2:
I'm confused--I just saw the notice that the class is today. I thought it was tomorrow. No big deal, just need to know so I can get my things together.
Also, what will we be doing with the "small square jewelry box?"

The package came today. :yay: I was only expecting one color. You sent me every color in the rainbow. Now I can spend the afternoon trying to decide which color and FO to use tomorrow.
I'm thinking Peaks Black Raspberry Vanilla with the Neon Purple or
Asian Sandalwood and Green Tea with the Chromium Green or
Cucumber Melon with the Neon Green or
Ocean with Ultramarine Blue
Off the sniff my FOs again. And thanks for the tip to start with 1/4 tsp.
Let me know if you ever need anything for candles or air fresheners.

The small box is for a special technique I use ... you'll have to wait until tomorrow to find out! mua-hahaha! It doesn't have to be a jewelry box ... just a small, square shape with a smooth, flat surface. A child's block will work.
I'm just about ready for class ! :D

Yes, 2:00 Central Time means 3:00 on the east coast of the U.S. West coast will be earlier.
Look at it this way. The class starts about 2 hours from the time of this post.
